According to a reliable source De La Salle senior shooting guard Alvin Ellis is strongly considering trying to get out of his letter of intent with Minnesota and re-open his recruitment.

According to the same source Ellis has not heard anything from Minnesota since the news broke early in the week that the Gophers had fired Head Coach Tubby Smith. He has not decommited yet, but if he does he will be one of the most coveted prospects around garnering attention from high majors across the country.

Ellis is the third best prospect in a stacked class of 2013 in the state of Illinois. The shooting guard has great size and can score at all three levels. He has continued to improve his game throughout his career including becoming a better passer and rebounder.

Go Gophers!!

Well. That would not be ideal. Hopefully he at least waits it out to see who the new coach is or at least gives MN an equal chance to sign him again.

This would hurt the gophers. Someone should have contacted this recruit.

If he hasn't heard from the AD's office that is a major crime. I have to assume this is false or else it is complete malpractice.

If this is true, that's not good news for Norwood. The dude is supposed to know how to handle a basketball program. Not contacting your top recruit to update him on the coaching search is not a great start.

I agree. I hope Norwood doesn't make me look at MACturi's time as AD with fondness.

Norwood better have something up his sleeve or this will just keep getting worse.

Well who would do that? Goldy himself? There is no head coach or coaching staff to call him.

+1. And if he opens up his recruitment, it may be best for everyone - the new staff may not be a fit for him and he may not be a fit for the new staff.

Exactly. Someone should have contacted Ellis. I cannot believe Norwood didn't do this himself.....

Ellis or Teague?? Cmon - this is pretty basic. You instantly call the kid- tell them that he is going to be pleasantly surprised at the coach we bring in and tell him to hang in there and that we will keep you in touch. Not too difficult.

In the press conference, Teague said that he and Ellis would be managing the program in the interim. This was in reference to someone asking if any assistants were left on staff in the interim.

Go Gophers!!

The longer this search goes, the less confident I become that we are going to get an upgrade at coach. This and the fact we are losing out recruiting class and have to pay a huge payout makes me wonder what is going on up there. How can you not keep in contact with the top recruit you have coming on to play for you?

Are you kidding? This kid is better than anything you will skim out of the summer marketplace.

One positive Ellis tweeted earlier in the week a thumbs up on Saunders.

In the past 3 days I've went from thinking Norwood Teague is a genius to wondering if he is completely incompetent. The fact that this recruit has not been contacted by the AD himself or someone else in the AD's office is mind blowing to me. Does he not realize the importance of this stuff? He couldn't take a few minutes and call the kid just to reassure him of the situation here and what the possible plans may be?

This is why a decision--the right decision--needs to be made ASAP. The clock is ticking, and us Gopherholers aren't the only ones getting antsy.

Could it be that this is only a rumor and richmondinsider is the reliable source?

Not to say I'm okay with this, but I don't think, three days into an intense coaching search, that it is all that surprising he has not been contacted. I would have liked to think that since he met with the current players, the incoming recruits would also get a call as well, but I'm not torn up about that. Now, if this thing stretches out in the next week and he continues to not hear, then that's a problem IMO, and I'd be disappointed.

Again, this doesn't bug me as much as it apparently does some of you. When Kill took over, he honored the scholarships that Brew had offered, but how many of those kids will still be around for the full four/five years?

It's great that Ellis was/is willing to come here, but it's not as though there won't be other guys available next year if he does switch (even with Tubby still here, me thinks next year was going to be brutal anyway - no front court and no point guard = no good).

If Ellis is thinking of opening up his recruitment, there is probably a good chance Foster is too, even though he isn't as highly touted.

No worries - as you all know, Tubby can't recruit. Ellis is a Tubby recruit, therefore he is no good and his departure would be of no consequence.

The only thing I can surmise from this report- if true- is that the AD and his cohorts thought they had someone bagged for a quick deal and planned on having the new coach call the recruits. When the deal fell through they didn't get around to fixing up the messy details because they went into panic mode.

Solid hypothesis. Then, perhaps, as they've been scrambling to get traction on Plan B, enough time has passed that Ellis is getting as antsy as we are.

While it couldn't hurt to call them, what exactly are Teague or Ellis going to tell them at this point that would change anything? They don't have to let them out of the committment, but I'm sure they will after they've at least heard the new coach out.

You know, these threads were a lot more fun when we had pictures of Shaka on a roller coaster at the MOA.... just saying.

SOP.

Nothing unusual here. Any commit (even though they knowingly commit to the University and NOT the coach) can and should reconsider their decision in a situation such as this.

Elvis could help in the future and play a part in building the program into something solid (i.e., at least one that occasionally has a winning Big Ten record) and would come into a pretty good situation without early pressures, but some opportunity.

That said, as of today Minnesota has three returning starting guards.

Just need to relax and let things play out.

Not knowing everything now is much better than having a low-hanging ceiling hanging over the team.

Oh I dunno - maybe something like "the University cares about you and will keep you informed thorugh the process..."

It's basic courtesy.

Oh, the emotion of a coaching search. Everything is pure speculation. Teague goes from hero to zero in 15 clicks of a forum post. For all we know, he's still got his #1 and all the recruits have been told. Or wait, maybe he's on his 10th and the sky is falling! God, I hate Teague, and love him. My head hurts.
