U of M looking for volunteers to help shovel out TCF Bank Stadium

Well, for starters, who will it affect??? The rubes that want to watch the Vikes? The Wilfs? The NFL? Again, how is this called a "disaster"???

Now lets look on the other hand, the oil spill affected people's jobs, natural resources, the enviroment, etc, etc, etc.

Just cut your losses...

I'm not comparing the scope of the events or their importance. If it was simply a case of 'my time is better spent doing real charity not shoveling snow for a football game' then fine. I understand that. Minnesota's publicly owned stadium was severely damaged by naturally occuring event. Ziggy didn't poke a hole in the roof. This is ultimately the MSFC's problem and therefore the public's problem. You seem to be implying that you cannot see volunteering to help because it is evil Ziggy's problem (even though it's really not) and he should deal with it. By that logic, why would you help in a situation where it actually is BP's fault for causing the problem?

Sonny, sometimes people volunteer to help people out who really need it. Other times people volunteer to have a good time, socialize with like-minded people, maybe drink a few beers afterward, experience something different and maybe make a few friends. You have some incorrect preconceived notions of what the word volunteer should mean.

They aren't paying these people for the same reason they don't pay 10k or marathon volunteers: they don't have to, people are willing to do this for free as a sort of collective demonstration of perseverance.

Updated info from the U!

Looks like the rate of pay is going up. Per the CityPages blog, it's $10/hour during the day, $13/hr from 7 PM-1AM, and $15/hr for the dog shift.

I just clarified with the U - they are not paying people, that is still volunteer. This link is from the Vikings...just so people know. I would hate for people to show up thinking they were getting paid - you would have to go through this link to get paid.

Also, here's an update from the U:
Free parking in Lot 37 and a phone number for further information have been added. Also, we're now asking that people bring their own scoop shovel (not a push-type) shovel.

Full announcement below ...

I am not opposed to anyone voluteering to help out a millionaire owner and millionaire football players so that they can make millions of more dollars on Monday night; I just find it funny that these millionaires are too cheap to pay everyone that helps them out. I mean, if it makes you feel better to help out a bunch of millionaires by shoveling snow while they watch you slave away all for the purpose of them making millions of more dollars, God bless you. BTW, what shift did Zygi sign up for? I guess he does not need to sign up anymore since he has a bunch of volunteers. LOL!!!

Hey as long as we have them here, how about getting an old fashioned barn raising going and get Tubby his new practice facility.

I think this would be a good four hour "team building" excercise for the football team. I have a feeling Jerry Kill, being an old country boy, has scooped his fair share of snow and ice out of feed bunks and knows that he can build some character rather quick.

So when you volunteer (if you ever have), what are your reasons? To be noticed? To pick up chicks? If I choose to use my time to do this, I think it is rather dickish of you to say that I am wasting my time. Make your own choices, and leave others to make their choices.

Whaaa! There's gonna be chicks at this thing? Sign me up! Be cool of the Vikings cheerleaders were there.

That's actually a great idea, it would be great PR for the team, have them take a shift...and it's a good workout. I bet a clip of that would make it to MNF if they did.

Holy Jesus Martha, or, for Khaliq Holy Allah Martha, have any of you truly every volunteered for anything without $$$$ for it? Try, just try, to match what the Fargo/Moorhead and surrounding areas do for volunteering to fight floods, let alone what the GREAT COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL KIDS do up here due to elements of frikking nature. I defy any of you to volunteer, and I mean volunteer. Volunteer, be a part of it. No pay needed. Period.

Volunteering for sandbag duty to keep the town from washing away and volunteering to shovel out the New Brickhouse for a pro football game are two VERY different situations.

Bull$hit... volunteering is volunteering. Give a damn of the venue.

That would be pretty cool. Can we make that suggestion to Maturi or Kill somehow? You're a celebrity GL, you can make it happen!

I told My friends to Go out tomorrow night to the bars, then hit up the 1 am-7am shift

Agreed. People can call the U cheap if they want, but I could also call people who complain they don't get paid, greedy. This is not something they expected or budgeted for. It's a one-time thing, and they're in a hurry to get it done. I would volunteer if I lived closer for sure.

what so they can't take some of the money they will make by having the game at TCF and pay the workers? This is a state institution and we have unemployed people. If people are unemployed and are able bodied and don't take the temp job then they should loose their unemployment benefits for this week.

To me, voluteering to help feed the homeless is a lot more noble than volunteering to help a bunch of millionaires make millions of more dollars without sharing any of it with the saps that help them make their millions. In the case of the latter situation I call them "suckers."

Let's see. I donate one day per year to Habitat for Humanity, another to teaching HS students about careers in science and engineering, and one more to the paintathon. Oh, I forgot about being a science fair judge. And I'm not even going to mention my very generous donation to the United Way every year.

And I still think its idiotic to volunteer to help a billionnaire like Zygi make millions off of a professional football game. Especially since he'll pack the Vikes off to L.A. the first chance he gets.

FTR, I do agree with you that there are a lot of very worthy charities that desperately need help. If someone feels so inclined to volunteer for something, there are a lot of causes much more deserving that Zygi.

I'd be way more prone to do it if it were for a Gopher football game. The fact that anyone's volunteering to benefit someone with the kind of money that Wilf has, seems a bit strange to me.

At least if its a Gopher game it would be for your alma mater (or the team you root for). Now, if Zygi Wilf were to offer to pay the Gopher athletic fund $10/hr for any volunteer's time, then I might even pick up a shovel. Although I'm only about 2 months removed from hernia surgery. My right nut is still aching from the shovelling I did this past w/e.

I would definitely volunteer if I weren't currently residing in Texas. It sounds like a blast, at least until the six pack I sneak in runs out. After that I would probably end up sliding down the sheet metal or whatever they use to get the snow from the pile down the aisles. Given that they are more than likely going to run into folks like me who have the maturity of a six year old I would suggest they pay folks to come in. It might eliminate the mischevious and immature (proud charter member of said club by the way), and it would pump some much needed money into the economy. The money it costs would be more than offset by the good will it would promote and would be well worth it with the stadium vote coming up this session.

I'm volunteering because it would be a very public "win" for the University of Minnesota and the Twin Cities community if we can pull this off. Monday Night Football! Is there a bigger national regular season stage?

Imagine if the Packers had some crazy situation where they had to use camp randall. Now imagine how funny it would be if the people of Madison failed to get the stadium ready on time. I would love it!!

There's no way I want to give the people of wisconsin another reason to laugh at us.

Haha - I wish! I just wish they'd listen to good ideas once in a while - I did send an email and suggested it. I doubt it will happen. You really couldn't ever pay for this kind of positive publicity though if they did do it.

And Yes, midway through the day they did change the "volunteer" status to "paid" - the Vikings did, not the Gophers. So everyone will be getting paid, which is great.
