@collegebbnews:

"It appears more and more likely that a Minnesota Golden Gopher reserve guard will transfer from the program in the next week."

Follow-up:

"They currently have 13 on scholarship & are waiting to hear if Trevor Mbakwe will come back for 6th year. Trent Lockett is a possible add-on"

Well we all know the likely candidates....I just hope there's nothing ugly about these transitions.

Tweet from Marcus:

"Tubby Smith today: "I wouldn't be surprised" if somebody transfers. Although he said he hasn't talked to anyone yet."

Go Gophers!!

Tweet from Marcus:

"The Gophers sent letter to NCAA "to find a way for Trevor to play whether we have a scholarship or not...I'm not going to run a player off."

Go Gophers!!

Tweets from Marcus:

"Tubby said in his conversation with Mbakwe it was clear "he wants to be here." But there's still the schoarship situation to deal with."

"Rodney Williams also told Tubby last week that he looks forward to being back and having a big senior season."

Go Gophers!!

Yes!!!! BTW, there is about a 99% chance Trevor will be back next year.

Doogie suggests Chip will be transferring:

"I'm not the first to acknowledge this >>> better chance on a different guard. RT @Parski1 @DarrenWolfson Think Mav will be the transfer?"

Go Gophers!!

Good! GH's say that would absolutely kill recruiting.

So- if it's not Mav it has to be Chip.

It is clearly Chip.

Mav has always seemed to have been happy here, even in the bench, actually plays PG, and seems to like Tubby.

Chip seems irritated with playing time, is now behind Welch, Joe, Austin, will likely be behind Wally if he doesn't redshirt, and barely saw time even in a 3 guard line up.

"I would never run a player off," said Smith, who said he hasn't had one-on-one meetings with all of his players yet, "but usually through attrition, usually through something, somebody decides that this is it."

Smith said he would "cross that bridge when we get to it" if the NCAA doesn't award another scholarship for Mbakwe.

"Something could happen," Smith said. "We could have two or three of them come in and say, Coach, 'I'm not happy.' "

Go Gophers!!

Will Mav please transfer? He seems like a good student, a good team mate, and a good guy, but I honestly cannot watch him play. He is, in my opinion, the worst scholarship player on the team, and I do not think it is even close. I will reiterate, he seems like a good person and has done all asked of him, but he really is not good at basketball.

Define "run a player off" tubby.

It's like the Kevin Payton situation. Seemingly very nice kid, always been a good soldier, supports the team, doesn't complain, just a great character kid (from an outsider's perspective), but doesn't have the basketball chops. It's a tough decision, but if Mav sticks, the mistake wasn't in not asking him to leave now, it was recruiting him the first place.

I would think it is Chip, he could probably go to a mid major and start, somebody in the Sun Belt, etc..

Sounds a bit like one of the Godfather movies.

"...usually through attrition, usually through something, somebody decides that this is it..." sounds a little bit different than last week's "we expect that everyone in our program this year to be back next year", but it's Tubby talking so who knows. Probably just words being said.

Things will work out fine.

I really dislike this time of year for this kind of crap. We have to get away from the idea that signing to play basketball here isn't a long term commitment. Everyone said it was no big deal when Cobb left...looked how that turned out. Tubby's system aint easy to play in and FR rarely do well...especially young guards.

One difference was that KP had already graduated and was coming back for his 5th year when he was shown the door. I'm less comfortable with the situation with Mav. But I understand how it goes.

He said "reserve" guard. Coleman is a starter.
