RT @NSandell: "I think he'll have another year" -- Smith on Mbakwe's prospects at being granted a sixth year by the NCAA

Go Gophers!!

Seems like a long shot-but if he does..... If he comes back and we keep the whole team it will be very interesting to see how we are viewed coming into next year. I for one have a whole different outlook about this team since Andre has been cut loose.

Tubby 'thinks' Mbakwe will have another year

Per Twitter:

Somewhere, GW scoffs loudly.

Dang Bleed, beat me to it. Mods please delete mine.

+19

Also EE that last two games.

Reminds me of last year's nonsense re: Walker

"The Gophers men's basketball team expects to receive a medical redshirt year for 6-10, 289-pound freshman center Maurice Walker, who tore a knee ligament in December."

Maybe they will get a unicorn and the lochness monster, too. Those don't exist in real life, either.

There is an ever-so-slight chance that the Committee could grant Minnesota's request regarding Mbakwe, but it's extremely unlikely and would be a jaw-dropper.

Don't want to be negative, but he also thought Mo would get another year. I'll be ecstatic if Mbakwe comes back, but at the same time I don't want to get my hopes up for nothing. I think we should be a good team next season regardless.

Will Bo Ryan bitch if Trevor is granted another year?:)

Based on what, Tubby?

Seems like he's just talking out of his butt.

What were the circumstances of Adam Boone who was granted a sixth year? How does this differ? There are some similarities to my recollection.

UH OH

Reminds me of last year's nonsense

Go away. You hate Chip. You hate Mbakwe. WE GET IT.

I have a good feeling about Trevor being back next year. Just like I knew Andre would be superior to Welch.

No similarities other than all of their circumstances didn't meet the criteria for the Five Year Waiver Rule. Same with Kim Royston. The difference for Boone and Royston were that they had decent arguments as to why it was an extreme or extraordinary hardship that kept them out of action.

The long shot argument that the U could (and likely will) go with is deeply damaged by the matter brought up this fall and the guilty verdicts in separate matters this past December and February.

The 2-guard that shot 6/18 & had 4 turnovers? RT @ericbjohnston: Can't be too upset, we're set with a superstar PG for the next 3 years.

Rip Andre? You are an idiot! 6 assist, 7of7 from the line 2 steals for 21 pts.

A special case involves the eligibility of a player who loses the majority of a season to injury. Popularly known as a medical redshirt, a hardship waiver may be granted an athlete who appears in fewer than 30% of his or her team's competitions (with none coming after the midway point of the season), then suffers a season-ending injury. A player who is granted such a waiver is treated for the purposes of his or her eligibility as though he or she had not competed in that season.
So the issue is at what point did Trevor end the season - this was the 9th game of 33 game season which is less than 30%.

I know I'm in the minority, but if his knee is good, heck, go make some money. Who wants to look in a bare refrigerator for another year and a half?

It doesn't matter. We have little chance at making the NCAA Tournament next year and there's a 2% at best Trevor is back. Just roll with it. Also Tom Crean sucks.

The University of Minnesota basketball program announced today that freshman forward Maurice "Mo" Walker will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season with a torn posterior cruciate ligament and meniscus. Walker suffered the injury on Dec. 23 against South Dakota State.
Mo was past 30% of the season.

It does matter. Phuc off phatty McJesse.

It's more like 35%.

No. Not at all. (And that's not exactly how the calculation (30%) would be done for a medical hardship waiver, but the issue is the Five Year Waiver Rule.. the time and severity of the injury this year is not the issue.)

Five Year Waiver Rule requires a kid to miss two or more years due to situations out of the school and student-athlete's control. i.e., out with injuries for two years out of your five while playing the other 3 at one school and you've got a vanilla case.

Royston, for example, did not meet the criteria. He was injured his fifth year.. but prior to that, he had sat out a transfer year after coming to Minnesota from Wisconsin. Generally, sitting out a transfer year is deemed within your control because you decided to transfer. However, he was essentially granted a waiver of a waiver because of "extremely or extraordinary circumstances"... specifically, the school argued that he transferred because of a family illness - that is, he transferred (and therefore sat out a year) so that he could be closer to a sick family member.

In Trevor's case, there is no such argument. I won't go through the specifics again on here, but if you want to know why it becomes such a problematic argument, send me a PM and I'll share my thoughts there (it's all publicly known information - I have nothing special to add, but I am not going to go through it on here).

Isn't it a moot point until Walker uses up his eligibility?

I think a better question is whether the NCAA has loosened over time. My personal belief is that they are scared of being sued so are granting more and more of these exemptions.

I will also add that I don't think Mbakwe will come back. It is time to earn some money playing basketball.

GW rarely has anything positive to say about the Gophers. Almost seems like he's a Marquette fan or something.

Lay off GW, he's a real life MFer that's done plenty... starting to head deep into chill mode but still down to whyl out on occasion.. pizda. It was no joke back then and still into today.

Dig a little deeper and you'll see why GW pisses so many of you guys off.

Typical rip the poster post. The man can have his own opinions can't he? Or do all Gopher fans have to think like you?

I'm not even sure why the U of M would submit a waiver request. GW has already confirmed the decision. Why bother. If I remember correctly GW has already ruled that there is a 2% chance. The rest of us have no idea what is going on.

I used to post muchos veces per dia, now not so much. But I browses, GW is no fan of the gophers & he has administrative rights to the site, that is part of what makes me shy away. Foo-gotz.
