Tubby and Royce White met tonight at Vescios

You have 5 years to play 4 once you attend that first class - unless there's medical RS in there somewhere.

I get that, trust me, if we have to worry about Royce wanting to be eligible for his 6th year, I'd be jumping for joy. That's not the topic, it's if he would be eligible next fall?

I can't believe all those people were there at the same time...I read it and laughed, then realized it was serious, now I'm just curious...

For him to be eligible next Fall he would need to have "made progress" towards graduation whatever the heck that means. Since he will not have passed any credits this semester, one would think he would have to take a heavy summer course load to make up for it. It's not a matter of GPA, it's total credits/hours passed towards graduation.

What the hell do I know anyways. There has to be someone on this board that knows this stuff.

Wouldn't he have made plenty of progress towards graduation if he comes in as a freshman basketball wise with 4 years of eligibility left and already having a full semester's worth of classes plus the classes he took last summer? That would mean he has 4 more years to finish about 3 and a half years worth of credits, right?

I don't think you can just take semesters off and keep playing, and by taking a semester off, I mean no classes of any sort at any institution.

Could a football player enroll in the Fall, play in every game, take the Spring semester off, then be eligibile to play again in the Fall? I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud here....

I agree Art, it doesn't sound right. I don't know the rules, but maybe he would have to sit out a few games?

he didn't play any games though.

Wow, that's a crazy night for the restaurant. Thanks for passing on the info.

I love how Tubby is now making all the puritans on this board squiiiirm! Even looking for reasons why he might not be eligible! Love it!! I will be the first to welcome Royce back with open arms -as long as he is in good standing with the NCAA and his classes, I think we need to let our coach and his staff handle this kid. For all of you who claim to "care" about Royce and hope he gets is life together (as long as it's not in my neighborhood or at the University) MIGHT have to humble yourselves and let one of the top 10 coaches and great role models in the country befriend and coach this young man. Time will tell if if if if he comes back. I certainly hope if Royce returns next fall that we unify to make this kid feel welcome as part of the Gopher "family"...

If a player re-enrolled in summer and fall (passing 12 hours, cumulatively) he could play in December after first semester ends.

My guess is that he would be eligible in the Fall. He passed all his 2009 Fall Classes. He withdrew 2nd semester for personal reasons. He re-enrolls for in Fall 2010. I think he would be eligible in Fall 2010.

not trying to stir the pot here or anything but I was at the wolves game tonight as crazy as that may be and who walked right in front of me with 9 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter? None other than Mr. Tubby Smith. He was by himself and sat in the first row behind the Wolves bench but only stayed for the remainder of the quarter. I didn't think anything of it until reading this post and I haven't doubled checked the timeline, just saying that Tubby was one busy man tonight.

Mohammad with Charlotte, although I'm not quite sure of the timeline, would have been one of Tubby's players as an assistant or head coach at Kentucky.

This summit between Royce and Tubby couldn't have spontaneous. I imagine that Tubby reached out to Royce and asked him to meet him at the restaurant. I can't imagine Tubby would do that if he didn't have a plan. I, for one, hope he offered Royce a chance to come back and finish out the season.

Sorry, I'm just envisioning the conversation between Tubby and Bobby Knight afterwards when Tubby was saying that Royce would come back with " perfect conditions " and Bobby Knight picking up a chair and chasing Royce around to give him the ol' El Kabong. Kinda like in the " We're playing the Gui-tar Hero " commercial.

Just had to get that out of my system. Carry on.

Yes...if that player took enough credits during that semester to meet the NCAA requirements.

Royce could easily enroll in summer classes and add those to his last summer classes and fall load and have enough to qualify for the season. Royce could also pick up credits at a Community College this spring that would transfer and count towards progress.

Even if he doesn't do any of this...he could take fall classes and be eligible for January...lots of options.

Everything I have read says Royce is a smart guy and can make his grades...so lets hope this gets worked out and he gets his credits and gets back to whats important to him and us...winning basketball games.

Hard for me to not be jaded though...I had such high hopes for this season...I really thought we would be a top 15 program this year with Royce and Mbakwe....UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha, that is good news. I thought it was a shot at everyone spreading the transfer rumors. That does make sense though, just a crazy bunch of characters.

I knew it was true when Walker Lee Ashley wasn't mentioned as being there.

Did Tubby give a big fist pump after Royce left?

No, you mean Seantrel was there officially announcing his decision.

Tubby needs to start planning for next year and really needs to know where White stands. I am sure that is all there was to it. He probably gave white what needs to be done by what date for his scholership to be available.

That is no small statement. He is holding one scholarship for Corey J but he has Nolen, Royce and Trevor scholarships up in the air. Can't go into next year with 4 open scholarships but yet he needs to hold those for Al, Corey and Trevor.
Not trying to leave Royce out of that but his situation unique.

Obviously questions and frustration for us fans but much more so for the coaches.

My God People!!!

Looks like this is far from over - and my personal take is that Tubby hasn't given up, and Royce still cares...but is just frustrated.

My boy, Gorton's Fisherman just contacted me with this nugget of information, he was actually at Vescios, and this is what he told me:

People, People.... Everyone is ignoring the most important question with this situation!!

What did Royce and Tubby order to eat?

One other important question is whether or not Royce felt safe on campus while he was here?

If Royce came back, he would have some work to do this summer to be eligible in the fall. It isn't impossible, but it would require a pretty serious commitment on Royce's part.

And to whoever asked the question, Nazr Mohammed played for Tubby at Kentucky.

As long as the schedule allows, Tubby goes to see all of his former players who are playing in the NBA when they are in town, especially ones from the Eastern Conference who only come into town once a year. I've seen him at a number of games this season. Saw him there with Fat Joe at one game.

I've seen Tubby the last two nights now...(I secretly think he's stalking me, ;) ) Tuesday night he was at the Eden Praire/Apple Valley game and last night he was sitting about 15 chairs away from me at the Timberwolves/Bobcats game, just off to the side of the Bobcats bench. Sat alone and was constantly looking down on his phone, nobody bothered him until after the game. Walked by him as I was leaving and said hello. The girlfriend wanted a picture with him, but she was too shy and he was soon busy signing a few autographs for people as they left the stands. He looked stressed out or sad just from watching his body language all night.
