It was a terrible take. The guy helped that team get a ring in what would of been an mvp season had not got hurt. With that said this Lance kid has the making of a very good nfl qb. Huge risk but I think he’s going to be just fine. Time will tell

I don't know about "a lot".

5 FCS players drafted this year (granted that's on the low side)....

210 from just the P5.


They're bound to hit gold in feel good stories...but not often.

You are correct from the NFL standpoint, most of those guys are going to come from the bigger schools.

I was making a more general comment about how they find a lot of quality players who get overlooked by the Power 5 schools for one reason or another.

How many d2 or d3? Vikings drafted a d2 TE.

In 2020 there were three total from D2/3, including the St. John's Ben Bartch. There were six FCS players drafted in 2020. It is a small number.
 




On Lance's size:

I work in local radio in SW MN. I did not cover any Marshall FB games, but I did see Lance play basketball several times in HS. In HS, he was clearly a superior athlete, but he was a lot learner. to me, it is a combination of a kid growing a little more after HS - I would say he grew close to an inch after graduating from HS - and getting into a college weight program where you specialize in one sport.

No question he is a little taller and a lot stronger now than he was in HS.

And that is where you get into projecting - looking at a 16 or 17-year old kid in HS and trying to project what that kid will look like in another 4 or 5 years.

As I said, I saw him play HS basketball. If you would have said, that kid will be the #3 pick in the NFL draft, I would have said you were delusional. I honestly thought he was going to be a D2 level basketball player in college.

We'll see what happens with his younger brother. The brother is a little smaller than Trey was in HS, but very similar in terms of athletic ability. He is going to NDSU as a WR. also very smooth on the basketball court.

I think there's been a big muddying of the waters as far as player talent and coaching talent overlap, especially near the bottom and top of whatever division or conference or whatever you categorize.

I swear as recently as the late 90s most P5 teams could just physically dominate their cupcake games... with almost no strategy other than 'oh they're weak there just run over there a lot'. The other team couldn't even adapt.

Now the difference in talent has narrowed and if you try to expose something you'll see teams adjust successfully a great deal more.

South Dakota State in 2019 ... they were bullying our OL early on, and even after we fixed that their secondary I thought was playing seriously good.

I feel safe in saying that the new NDSU QB is not going to be the #3 pick in the NFL draft.

The true measure isn’t being drafted, it’s ending up on a 53 roster.

So when he was in HS was he 6'1 and around 190 pounds?

I would say close to 6'2" and maybe 195. But, as I said, to my eye he looks at least an inch taller and close to 30 lbs heavier now compared to his SR year of HS.

Of course, it's not that unusual for people to get taller/bigger after HS. I had a buddy who was about 6'2" in HS and he was a good 6"4" by the time he finished college. Me - I'm the same height now as when I was a SO in HS. Never got a lick taller.

You can see why he was not highly recruited 6'2" 195 throwing around 1,300 yards in 3 or 4A ball. There are a million guys like that. P5 is not into the project guys. That is why you see guys taken from the smaller schools. Look at the guy from St. Johns, he was a 6'4" 220 pound TE when he started college.

Have you had an epiphany? You seemed legitimately confused as to why nobody in power 5 was interested in Kristoff but you can understand why there wasn't much power 5 interest (at least at QB) for Lance.

Kowalkowski was the only QB in the state this year with FBS offers. There were over 20 schools, some P5 that were going to come watch him throw this spring, because of Covid that was all shut down. The Vikings even shut down the all Star Game for all the guys this year. The last time he threw for a team was two years ago and he was offered. He played at a program that basically ran the ball and he broke all their passing records. He is over 6'2" and over 215. He may end up larger then Lance in three years.
