Transfer QB for 2025

Rentals are great but Minnesota should fundamentally continue to be a developmental program. The guys in the room need a chance to compete. Kaliakmanis was not good enough to play at MN and there was nobody behind him on the roster. I would rather see Minnesota try to develop Lindsay than blow their entire NIL budget on a QB.
Not trying to argue, but wouldn't the bolded be a reason in favor of bringing in transfers? Without a transfer, there's a risk you could replace the word "Kaliakmanis" with "Lindsay" in that sentence above and it could be true next year.

Lindsay likely would be gone if a really good transfer QB was brought in next year and that would really really suck. Lindsay is a baller!
That could be true with Jackson Kollack coming in too. If there was no 2025 high school qb then it might be easier to convince him to take the reins his 3rd year.

Not if it’s a transfer with only a year left. He didn’t have many P5 offers out of high school, can’t imagine he’d garner many if he transferred.
But he could transfer down and then come back to p4 in a year or two....

The entire reason for a developmental redshirt is to give him an entire year to get his body ready for next season. If he turns out to be average then we’ll want him to be a four-year starter that can provide consistency. If he turns out to be elite then he’ll be gone in two years anyway. If he can’t hack his way to bowl eligibility as a 19-year-old then he’s probably not going to be elite at 23. Playing him next year gives Fleck an entire season to gauge him early in his career, gives the team an excuse to rebuild, and cuts Fleck some slack because nobody is going to expect him to win the B1G with a Freshman QB.

If we want to get rental players then go get offensive lineman to protect him.
I’m not worried about him being physically ready.

It's pretty simple. If no upper classman is brought in, then Lindsay is the guy.

Maybe this Jacob Clark guy at Missouri State. 5th most yards in FCS and 70% completions.
I know you are just joking around but it isn't out of the realm of possibility to go find someone like Clark who started at power 4/5, dropped down to the FCS and then is ready for a second crack at the upper level again after a few years.

This is year 6 for Clark which I think means he is done but then again with the current rules he very well could have another year left...

Wittke is pretty good next year. He's the computers choice over Lindsey in CFB 25 game.

Was joking, but thought I saw JR, but you are correct. SR.

Back to combing through FCS starting QB

I think Clark's bio did show that he had a year where he played a few games and then was injured.....medical redshirt maybe and a 7th year????....you might be onto something. :)

I think he’d be a nice add if possible. Who knows maybe he loved it here but just wanted play time.

I believe this is correct. They are moving up to the big time division and I think they are touting him as the guy to lead them into that. Zero chance he comes back here, but I like his game and overall style a lot.

Wee seem very welcoming to a transfer QB as long as they ply well for us. Also if some transfers awy from us they become a bad guy. Kind of like professional wrestling, guys can go from a bad guy to a good guy quickly, and visa versa. I used to think that I was more sophisticated than a pro wrestling fan, but I am not. Go gophers!

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on what his highest priorities are. If he wants to play P4, it's unlikely he'd be able to transfer anywhere else P4 and be handed the job.

Walter Payton Award winner Mark Gronowski at SDSU has a year of eligibility after this year. After strong speculation (and even sourced confirmation) that he would end up at Northwestern with his old O.C. this fall, he returned to SDSU insisting that it was for one year, and one year only, and then all in on the NFL. I think the NFL draft analysts told him he wouldn't be drafted last April, that he needed to work on certain mechanics and throws, and he decided SDSU was the place to do it, rather than sweating out a competition at an FBS school (SDSU is also rumored to have come up with a nice NIL package). Problem from #11 is that without NFL caliber pass catchers (guys like Tucker Kraft tearing it up in Green Bay and Zach Heins at LAC, and the super senior Janke twins who spent time on NFL training camp rosters), he he doesn't look like an NFL quarterback. But then again, former NDSU signal caller Easton Stick was a 5th round pick is on the LAC roster, as well, and he never looked the part no matter his pass catchers in North Fargo. Perhaps realizing that the NFL draft is a pipedream, Gronowski will be inclined to taking the best NIL deal he can get from an FBS school and finishing up his masters next school year. What's Peej got in the NIL wallet?

The issue is going to be, what kind of talent can they bring in without promising the starting job? They got Brosmer because they told him he was the guy. But with Lindsay you have to at least have an open competition and most of the top transfer guys want guarantees on playing.

I don’t think we have to promise anything. If the qb is decent he should be confident he can beat out a redshirt freshman three star.

There's a huge difference between, "you have to beat out a redshift freshman that has been in the program for a year learning the playbook and throwing to the receivers" and "here's the keys please don't crash it".

Minnesota got Brosmer because they could honestly say the latter. They will not be able to say that next year.

It’s a small difference to me. Still are asking a very experienced player to beat out an extremely inexperienced one. And again it’s not like Lindsey was highly sought after as a recruit. We are still going to be an attractive spot for a QB transfer. It’s not like there’s going to be 20 other P4 schools that will only have a true frosh to compete against like we did this year.

My gut feeling is power schools will be interested in Drake if he goes into the portal. Though the sample size is small and against inferior competition, he clearly has the talent at this level.
