Transfer portal

Yeah, no guarantee he improves, but generally most qbs tend to get better as long as you don’t have a carousel of OCs.
Is that really true, though? Lots of QBs never see the field. Those that do, some get better, some don't. Many start, get benched and never see the field. That assertion paints with an awfully broad brush.

Really, his HS stats were crazy good. He’s bigger than helll if anyone has stood next to him you’d know. What’s the downside on going all in on him like I said earlier another sub par season and a shitty bowl. I’m all in on 3.
For a team whose top end is mediocrity a running a guy out into the most important position in sports on a wing and prayer is quite a risk.

Do we pine to play lightly recruited 3* freshman prospects at any other position? Do we annoint unknown o-linemen? Corner backs? Certainly we have similarly regarded receivers on the roster but no one is saying "we don't need to look for receivers in the portal, we have __________."

I don’t have a study or anything, but I think broadly all players at all positions tend to improve with time. Lots of factors can derail that, but generally I think that is true. You don’t see all conference or all American teams dominated by freshman and sophomores for a reason.

He’s big yes. His best offer besides MN was who? He did have great HS stats no doubt, but don’t most D1 QBs? I’m not saying he can’t be very good and I hope he is, but there is no solid evidence he’ll be ready to play and play well in 2025. I’ll trust Fleck he knows a lot more than any of us.

He didn't have a lot of great offers, but his HS tape is really impressive. I saw an interview with local Razorback radio guys who seemed to really believe that Arkansas would regret not offering him. And this is a quote from former Arkansa coach Houston Nutt:

"I tease Casey sometimes saying, 'You have a better quarterback playing for you than you were,'" Nutt said. "[Lindsey] could easily play in the SEC. He is almost 6-foot-6 and is looking over everybody, and he is so accurate. You have to give [Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck] a lot of credit. He looks real good making that early offer."

Just listened to a pod that said the Gophers have recently invested considerable NIL into Drake Lindsey and, because we have a lot of other needs, we likely won't be getting as good a quarterback as Brosmer from the transfer portal this year. I agree with you that we have to be careful speculating too much on Lindsey's upside, but the Gophers also don't have the luxury of doubling up their bets on any one position including QB. That's unfortunate, but the reality of our situation.

Purdue with 18 kids in the portal after a coaching change. They'll be able to fill back up though...

QB is a tough thing in college. Lindsey looks promising but may not be ready but if he doesn't get to play and is riding the pine he might transfer out. So if you bring in another one year QB like say Sluka then you might be better in 2025 but you might lose Lindsey and be looking in the portal again for another one year wonder.

Then again, we don't know for sure if Lindsey will be good or not but can't find out if he doesn't play.

Tough situation. I can see going either way.

Yeah it is a tough call. You don't want to run off a QB who will be really good eventually but at the same time if you bet on the young guy and he fails that is not good either.

In 2023 we bet on Kaliakmanis and it bit us. Will be interesting to see how things shake out with the QB position. Fleck has been open that we are going to bring in a transfer and so far Drake hasn't hit the portal....but still a long ways to go.

Is it just me, or is the portal quieter than usual this year?
Portal just officially opened today. Not going to see guys from the playoff teams leaving and a lot of others will wait until after their teams bowl game. I am sure it will be the same level of crazy or more, especially with the 105 roster limit.

Closes again on 12/28. Why does the transfer portal close before a good share of the major bowl games play out? Why can't it stay open well into January but before spring semester starts? And I'm not saying it for the fans; as a college kid think be tough to miss out on a bowl game experience whether you play or not.

There is a 5 day January window for the teams in late bowl games and the CFP. Assume with our game being played on January 3rd we would be included in that window.

There’s a reason why quarterbacks in the NFL make $30- 50 million and running backs and cornerbacks, et al make a fraction of that. The position is different than any other and I do think it takes potentially more kid gloves and nuance than managing the other positions. If they want to bring in some squid to be a back up and he’s clearly at a back up level I think that’s fine otherwise I’d rather recruit and develop kids within the program to play the position; with the portal there in case of emergencies like last year. I’ll bet that this is what PJ is doing this year not looking for somebody to promise the starting job too like he did with Brosmer— and good that he did Max was a lot of fun and a big need.

I thought there was a number of guys announced intention to transfer out right after the last week of last season. I’m maybe just misremembering.

really depends on the position. just by the nature of the position, I think that a really good RB or WR has a better chance of coming in and contributing as a true FR - if they bring something that other players on the roster don't - like real top-end speed.

other positions - especially OL and DL - just seems like players need that added physical maturity that only comes with time and work in the weight room. a 21 or 22-year old OL is going to be better than an 18-year old OL in almost every case.

Because of the NIL money Drake is getting, I doubt the portal QB will be here for anything but as an injury backup. He'll be nowhere near the caliber of a Brosmer. I do believe it's Drake's job to lose.
