Transfer portal

Well, you are batting 1000. Everyone disagrees with you.
1. You say don't gift wrap the job for Lindsey.
2. Don't bring in a QB to compete.
1 and 2 are mutually exclusive.
Lol, Not many peeps on this board if 2-3 members = everyone

What's asinine is how so many people don't understand the current state of college football or the game of football in general.
I think people get it. You don't want Lindsey to transfer out if we bring in a portal player (and a lot of players transfer out due to that scenario). We all get it.

Is there a chance that bringing in a portal player will get Drake Lindsey to transfer? Absolutely.

But to where? Other similarly situated programs are not going to hand the keys to castle to a FR transfer without any experience. It's way too much of a leap of faith for them. He could transfer down to play right away and then transfer again after next year (back up in competition).

IMO, the QB position is just too important. You cannot bank your entire season on a FR QB who did not have to earn the position.

The simple fact is that QB is now a portal position. 10 of the top 13 BG10 QBs in yards are past or present portal players.

I don't really know how to explain it any clearer than the way I have. You get better at playing the game by actually playing the game, it's a pretty simple concept. There's always going to be growing pains with young players especially at the QB position. Teams no longer have the option to bring a player along slowly. The days of guys playing 2nd and 3rd string for 3-4 years are gone with the transfer portal.
There's no pressure for the Gophers to compete for a Big 10 title let alone a spot in the CFB playoffs so why not develop a QB that might possibly do that.
I'm not interested in seeing a three win season with a roll of the dice on a freshman, especially without the emergence of any young weapons at wide receiver this past season and the line issues we consistently saw. PJ learned the hard way with Kaliakmanis and got validation in seeking a transfer qb from the portal. If something works once (especially really well a la Brosmer), you try it again. If Drake beats the portal guy out in practice, then you roll with him. Otherwise, you take a dude with college level experience and the stats to show he's a steady hand. Drake is not a five star blue chipper that you can trot out and he's an instant game changer, if he was he would've been out there last year.

Yeah, we managed to stay off the QB Carousel for quite a while but anymore it is rare to see a QB who actually committed to the school he is playing for....at least at the power conference level. Stil happens (Aller at PSU) but it is becoming more and more rare.

Why and where would Lindsey go? He was back-up as a true freshman and has not played enough to get any P4 guaranteed playing time. He can compete for playing time this year and if he wins great and if he doesn't he might be first man up again. If he falls to 3, then he likely is gone after this year. If he plays some and looks to be #1 in 2026, we pass on the 2026 portal or look at more of an experience support QB.

Some kids might actually be willing to go the Arch Manning route and wait their turn.

By definition, you can't get more out of the qb position than the MAX.

Am I the only who thinks PJ should stay away from a QB in the transfer portal and go with what he has on the roster. I know the current current QB roster is inexperienced but there seems to be some potential in Drake Lindsey and this Jackson Kollock kid they just signed.
Sorry, late to the party here; but I disagree. If Lindsey or Kollock happen to beat out a transfer QB then I guess they bested the competition and that could be a good sign. That's all I can ask for - a fair competition.

When Morgan was here running the show for the better part of a decade do you think there was fair competition at the QB position? Guys are knuckleheads. I personally would’ve been fine rolling out number three and taking our chances. I think we are seeing over reaction because AK sucked so bad.

Hopefully some players see what Arch Manning did and follow suit but not holding my breath for that to become the norm again.

In regards to Drake.....would seem his options would probably be limited to lower level teams unless he is willing to do what Knuth did and go to a power 4 school and ride the bench. But if he is willing to do that he may as well just stay here. Can't see a power 4 team handing him a starting job.

Yes I do believe there was fair competition at the QB position during Morgan's time here. He had to beat out Annexstad and of the other QBs we had on the roster during his time at the U who can you know for certain would have been a better option than Morgan?

Athan Kaliakmanis - We saw how that went in 2023
Cole Kramer - definitely not better than Morgan
Jacob Clark - didn't blow up till 2024 in FCS
Jacob Knuth - Hasn't seen field yet at U or K-State
Santaga, Pickerign, Faoa - non factors.

So yeah, I bleieve during his time here that Tanner Morgan was the best QB on the roster and gave us the best chance to win of the options we had.

I never said gift wrap Lindsey the job. What's the point of recruiting any QB if your not going to develop one as a starter. If you don't have the confidence in those recruits why offer them a scholarship. Reality is if you don't play these guys they'll will hit the portal as well.
I don't disagree with you, Bronk...you don't get better holding a clipboard. I thought @Ski-U-Ham asked the right question, though...are you prepared for a rough season at the expense of developing the young guy?

Today's college sports environment doesn't seem to allow for this approach any longer, especially amongst most fans, where immediate and current results are demanded.

I remember the days when the hoops team would bring in 4-5 well regarded Freshmen recruits and give them heavy minutes right away. I was okay taking some lumps for 1-2 years and being totally satisfied as a fan just watching them develop as players knowing there would be an eventual payoff.

Those days don't really exist anymore and its the primary reason my interest in college athletics has dwindled over the years.

Bring in the best QB available in the portal and let everyone compete. Young guys still transfer even after getting the chance to play.

Is there a long list of freshmen three star qbs that have come in and excelled in this conference?

Toss out the star rankings part.....is there a long list of freshman QBs that have come in and excelled in the conference? I would bet that list is pretty small of guys that have played and excelled as true or redshirt freshman.

And it’s not like Raiola lit it up, but our three star guys can hit the ground running.
Obviously, Raiola was overrated. And Nebraska doesn't have our Harbaugh deveolping their QB's.
And Lindsey has a chip on his shoulder...ski u mah, row da boat, Go Gophers!

the vast vast vast vast vast vast vast vast vast vast vast majority of development does not happen on gameday. they do 100-1000s of reps every single week in practice. is there another level of getting used to "game speed" and reps when you're getting hit? absolutely. But to act like Lindsay is not a better QB today than he was prior to the start of the year is facetious. Under that same argument, so many qbs who sat and learned prior (both in college and the nfl) would've never developed to be as they are today

further if drake doesn't want to compete with someone, he's not it. that's take my ball and go home shit and not what you want in your starting qb. if he loses out and transfers, you're better off moving on. that's why you recruit new qbs every year and continually try get someone better when you can turnover the position every year (and this should be done across the entire roster)

Nonsense on Morgan.

Well the only way he's going to develop is if he plays.
I get what you're saying, but every coach and player on Earth knows practice is where the magic happens. He probably learned more last year under Brosmer than the previous 10 years. And he didn't play a snap really in an actual game.

Another year doing that isn't going to stunt his growth. Not wanting to compete and learn from his peers and transferring would be FAR more detrimental to his learning curve.

Who was better? I was not a huge Morgan fan and was happy when AK got the job, but in reality there was no one better was there?
Yeah if you're going to knock the coaches it would be for them not getting a better QB on the roster, not the fact that Morgan started so many games.

Because i don't think the Gophers have the NIL funds or appeal to bring in a talent that's much better than what they have on the current roster.
How do you know what kind of talent we have on the roster? Or NIL available?
