Transfer Portal 2025

. . . Heyer, Battle, and McKinney have all shot about 30% from three as well. None of these are terrible numbers by any means, but there is always room for improvement. For a long span of the season, McKinney was shooting 50/40/90 splits as a freshman.

Agree that Minnesota shot the ball pretty well from 2 this year against BIG competition, but the 3-ball was a very different story. Against BIG competition, the Gophers shot 29.6% from 3, 17th in the BIG. And the Gophers lose Stewart, which will hurt, but get Braun back, which will help.

The individual conference numbers also tell a different story. Battle was terrible from 3 against BIG competition, 20% this year, 19.4% the year before. Battle only had 7 3-pt attempts her first year against BIG competition in nearly 30 minutes a game, highlighting that she did not come in as a good 3-pt shooter.

McKinney shot 23.2% from 3 against BIG competition, which I suspect will improve. Still, with her gather/hitch motion on her 3 ball, she is not a natural 3-pt shooter.

Heyer shot 31.2% from 3 against BIG competition this year and 31.1% last year. That put her at the 35th percentile this year. Below average.

To move up the Gophers need to get much better from 3.

Edit: All stats per herhoopstats.

A factual rebuttal. I like it! The Gophers have a long way to go before they can be viewed as an excellent 3 point shooting team.

Yo
Dismantling a lot of talent on the team? I pull for this team and I like this team but the were 8-10 in big ten play. The 8 wins came against teams with a combined record of 34-92!! You say they had good wins? They beat two teams with a winning record in the big ten one 11-7 the other 10-8. Sorry but this team can use new faces. I don't want to gut the team and I think this team can improve but it was not a good team last year.
Players improve in the off-season and as they physically mature (especially teenagers or young adults).

It’s Year 2, maybe practice some patience, Grasshopper?!?!

I guess whenever I hear people saying that we need some unidentified scoring threats from the portal, my main reaction is to ask for specifics on what players they think are gettable and why they are better than our core group. And specifically, who should these new players replace? Because half the time, it's people suggesting the likes of Ronnie Porter and Gracie Merkle, who only stood out because they played on bad teams and would perform much worse on a team with talented players (that still need lots of practice and coaching) like ours .

Yes, I did. They beat multiple good teams this year without their best player. It's hard to pick up the pieces when the player other teams focus most heavily on guarding is completely neutralized. They've done better this year at playing without Braun, and with her next year, more of the pieces will click. This team also started from rock bottom last year, with a bunch of freshman and some older players who played under a less than ideal coach and probably learned some bad habits. It's a huge undertaking to rebuild and reteach.

The coaches probably aren't going to recruit what you would consider scoring threats. There just aren't a ton of gettable players floating around that are better than the group we've got, and even those that are gettable have their own imperfections. Seeing the decisions that were made in the portal last year, it seems like the coaches believe in their core set of players and just feel they need to tweak things a bit here and there with some targeted transfers who aren't super flashy.

To get higher profile players (who would probably highly prefer they start), they'd need to fork out a lot more money and playing time, and to do so is risky because that means blowing up the system and team dynamics you worked to build for two years. Other than the super teams like South Carolina, Tennessee, UCLA, etc., most teams also only really depend on between 7 and 9 core players through conference play, then have a small handful of bench players they never play. So getting higher profile players in the portal would require kicking some really talented Gophers off the team.
Thank you! I believe this coaching staff uses the portal to help with depth and fill some roles. Not star power. The core group as improved so much and will continue. It will mean much more when success happens to players who bought in and did everything they could for Minnesota

Great player. Huge attitude. VERY interested to see if her post season antics hurt her transferring.

She's so talented. If she could get out of her own way she's a future WNBA All Star.

Maybe a different coach can guide her better, I'd take her baggage and all. Seems like the type that ends up with Kim.

If the players weren't all heading into year 4 and 5 I'd agree. You either have the athleticism to compete or you don't. Athletic players can get to places on the court and help create better, less contested shots, that more often go in the backet.

This team will be McKinney's team in short order and they need to build around her. If she makes the big improvements this summer and the experience they have next year should be fun.

Kinda depends on where other players land and how the other B1G teams rebuild and use the portal.

2-3 portal pick-ups are a must for the team.

She will be in the SEC

My hope is win the WBIT this year and use it as a springboard to a Sweet 16 run next season: zi think that’s a level of progress most would be happy with, I hope!!

We need more McKinney level athleticism yo compete with the heavy hitters??

I have not watched her play more than a few games this season but her tourney behavior was classless. She is obviously talented so I have no doubt some team will be happy to have her.

With that attitude problem, there’s no way that Dawn would touch her with a 10 foot pole.

McMahon probably shopping for biggest NIL deal she can get from LSU, CT, Kentucky, Or Tenn. I think South Carolina gives pretty similar deals to all of the players on that team. Maybe Iowa would have some money for a player of McMahons caliber.

Gracie Merkle from Penn State has entered the portal. She is a 6'6" sophomore that averaged 15.5 PPG and 8.6 RPG. Might be a nice addition.

Not me entertaining myself by envisioning Cotie McMahon and volatile Rutgers transfer-out Kiyomi McMiller (and, yes, Rutgers' season is not even over yet although hers is) ending up at the same team...

LSU for both?
