Thoughts on Cade Tyson from those that saw exhibition games

Didn't see any of the two exhibition games but looking at box scores it looks like Cade was far and away our best player in those 2 games scoring 28 and 26 points while shooting a really high percentage from both 2 and 3.

For those that did see the games how do you think his game will translate as the degree of difficulty increases in the regular season?

He was a double digit scorer at Belmont but didn't do much at North Carolina last year. Can he be the offensive leader for this team?
 

Tyson will bury an open look when he catches the ball and his feet are set.
Tyson showed a sneaky ability to tap in a couple offensive rebounds around bigger players.
Tyson is certainly more athletic than Durkins, but he doesn't have great handles to create his shot off the dribble. If he has to do that, then the Gophers will be in a world of hurt. I think this last point is why he didn't do well at UNC. He was being required to do something that isn't his strong suit. Here, I think Niko is going to have a more fluid offense that will get Tyson better looks in catch and shoot opportunities.
 


Tyson's minutes last year for UNC went like this:

It's hard to get into much of a rhythm when your minutes are all over the place like that. Hopefully he gets back to being the player he was prior to UNC. I'm excited to see what he can do.

Hubert Davis seems to be more of a get great talent and let them make plays coach. I hope Tyson fits in a whole lot better in Niko's system.

The difference will be that he's not going to get those looks versus teams game planning for him with better athletes. Then he'll start pressing and rushing shots to get them off and the percentage will drop.
Maybe Niko has enough movement to get him open looks?

But, in general we need a couple other guys to emerge as consistent scoring threats to occupy more defenders.. Seems like we need more firepower...at at least one other threat.

I would think Tyson will be fairly easy to shut down? Doesn't seem like a guy who can use the bounce to get defenders in foul trouble. I know he has shot some free throws but doesn't seem like the kind of player who will live at the line.

Gophers are going to need other scorers when they get to B1G play. Tyson will score when he gets his feet set, he's pretty consistent. If they don't have balanced scoring I doubt he gets the looks against the likes of Izzo and others in the B1G.
 




I think he definitely looks the part of a Big Ten wing and will be our top scorer. He showed flashes of real athleticism and creation in both exhibition games. He also scored at all three levels as a Sophomore at Belmont (see highlights). He's definitely not just a “feet set” shooter. That may be Durkin’s role, but Tyson has got a much higher ceiling and complete game.

 

Ironically (I’m still interested to see if it falls off as we get into the season) I see it the opposite way. I feel that Tyson needs to be “The Guy” in order to dominate a game. For UNC and all of their talent, he was just “A Guy”. I think there is a legitimate chance that Tyson is 1st or 2nd B1G this year as there will be plenty of opportunities for him to make his mark.
 

I think there have been plenty of people in the B1G that have been successful with less athleticism than Cade. I agree he is going to have to have a quick release and be able to shoot while pressured. It does seem like he's not afraid to put the ball on the deck and go around an out of control closeout though.

On the other hand, if coaches do set up their defenses to stop Tyson, and Tyson moves the ball within the Niko offense- others will get open looks. In the past we have had star players who were operating in a less movement and pass oriented offense who ended up forcing shots that were lower percentage and their efficiency went down.
