The "Let's Pilage FIU of Their Recruits" Thread

We don't have that many scholarships unless we see a guy on the current roster transfer. IMO the 1st priority should be Ellis and then if Pitino feels the need to bring another guy in he should go after him 2nd. Perfect situation would be if we could add an experienced graduate transfer point guard or power forward.

Alvis Ellis has somehow being called a "steal" for the University of Minnesota, yet he is the 30th best!!! player at his position for the class of 2013. I HAVE NEVER SEEM HIM PLAY, but based on his rankings on Scout.com (3 stars, No. 30 at SF), I don't think we should panic if we lose him. He was recruited by no major schools and is a 72 overall rating on ESPN and is NOT RANKED on Rivals.com.

I have been impressed with the guys that Pitino has been able to commit to FIU, including Buckles.

It's an interesting situation. I'd rather not load up on players just to get numbers. Our depth and current roster set up is fine for next year. I'd probably rather not add more than 3 players (total) unless some of these guys transfer out.

Malik Smith could make some sense. We could use more shooters and ball handlers and he would only eat up a scholarship for 1 season.

Too bad Lockett wasn't looking for a spot this year like he did last year when he left ASU for Marquette.

If Lockett had went to Minnesota rather than Marquette I bet Tubby is still here. I was impressed by his all around game. Tubby should have told Oto it's been real and opened a spot for Trent. His late signings were his undoing. We maybe had the worse bench in the Big Ten.

I agree. We were pretty solid first 8 then really struggled.

I googled "Jonathan Holton basketball" (the JUCO), and here's the first thing that pops up: Basketball Star's Sex Tape Arrest - YouTube Holton averaged 10.2 points and 8.2 rebounds as a freshman for Rhode Island before I'm assuming he got the boot.

Also, Pitino offered two 2014 kids from the Bronx that he might continue to recruit to Minnesota...

Shavar Newkirk (PG) - offers from FIU, Iowa State, Providence, Seton Hall, UMASS, and more
Terry Larrier (SF) - offers from FIU, Delaware, Drexel, Iona, Siena, and more

I'm pretty excited about the NYC pipeline we are going to have.

Hey guys, URI grad here. First off, congratulations on the hire. Holton was a great player with some serious upside, as exhibited by his one year playing for Rhody. Unfortunately, Coach Baron, who was grasping at straws to keep his job, started going after some questionable kids, including Holton. If memory serves me correctly, Jon was arrested on campus after filming himself doing the deed with some girl(s), which he, for some reason, thought would be a fantastic idea to post publicly on Facebook. This all developed at our around the time when Coach Baron was fired, and Jon was kicked out of school. This case is still ongoing in Rhode Island, and his Pretrial Conference is scheduled for the end of this month.

Oh yes, when the cops were searching his dorm, they also found out that he had stolen the laptop he was using from a common room.

A few days after he was charged with felony video voyeurism, the cops paid him another visit, charging him with being a fugitive from justice relating to a warrant in Florida, stemming from a robbery.

Hopefully Jon has turned his *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# around over the last year. It seems as though he had a troubled childhood, and actually lived with his coach during high school. If, and only if, he has straightened out, I think he would be a solid pickup for you guys.

I'm probably dreaming, but I'd like the power forward from Tulane (Josh Davis) who has one year of eligibility left and wouldn't have to sit out a year. Perhaps Pitino can give Davis his best sales pitch?

Agree. I think Pitino will too.

Pitino didn't pass on him at FIU (brought him in after all his past issues had occurred).

For the record, the old Miami stuff was never prosecuted and he hasn't been found guilty of the iphone video clip junk or anything else.

That said, there are a number of options for 2013 already and more to come.

He posted a homemade sex tape on facebook? How stupid can you be? I think I'll pass on Holton, too.

Cameron Forte ‏@Smoothiewhatup 14h
Oh ya and Coach Pitino and his staff got the Job at Minnesota from FIU and carried my offer over !

Thats him. Another link: http://www.jucorecruiting.com/cameron-forte-of-howard-college-picking-up-interest-after-hutch/

Cameron Forte, a 6-6 forward at Howard College, has seen his recruitment pick up dramatically after his performance at the NJCAA D1 National Tournament. During the regular season, Forte averaged 23 points and nearly 8 rebounds per game. He finished third in the country in points per game this season and shot 63% from the field. Forte, who will have three years at the next level, averaged 22 points per game during Howard’s three game tournament run while making 25 out of 42 shots.

Forte is extremely skilled around the rim and has a soft touch from 10 feet and in. He is long and athletic, which allows him to beat his man down the floor in transition and finish above the rim. He knows how to seal his man in the low post and hold position.

Forte is hearing from the following schools: Tennessee, Georgia, FIU, BYU, UT San Antonio, Santa Barbara, TCU, Pitt, Long Beach St. and North Texas.

He tweeted this before saying Pitino carried the offer over:

Cameron Forte ‏@Smoothiewhatup 14h
In case any of my followers follow my recruiting my Top schools right now are Georgia, Long Beach, Colorado State, Pitt and Ole Miss

Will commit "in the next couple weeks, at most"

So we aren't in his top schools?

Tough to say since it was before the Pitino offer carried over. Needless to say, a Pitino offer at Minnesota is likely more enticing than one at FIU.

Edit: may have read that wrong. If the tweets were at the same time, then what I said above is obviously void. That being said, if he takes the time to review the Minnesota offer then we may have a good chance.
