The "Let's Pilage FIU of Their Recruits" Thread

Parski, you and Half-Truth and the other people in Tubby withdrawal should form a support group and hug it out!!! Tubby is gone, get over it.

Just put them on your ignore list like I have. It's really nice.

I am far too much of a masochist to block them all.

Besides, having a common enemy is good for a population. I've rarely seen the GopherHole as unified as they are against these children.

Let's sign some kids who were heading to schools a little above the Sun Belt Conference shall we?

I hope every player the Gophers sign feels that way. It's called confidence.
Try negative overconfidence and complete lack of reality... if no one can cover him he would be an NBA All Star not a top 250 high school kid

If Sprewell decommitted, he likely is not going to want to come here as he already said not to Pitino.. who knows. I hope McNeil and the juco forward ask to be released.. they would both make nice additions to our team

Or maybe he just couldn't qualify? Which also means he won't be coming to a Big Ten school...

I think Dre is pretty confident, hopefully we see even more swagger out of him the next couple years

Dre is confident when he gets hot and starts violently jawing at his mouthguard, but if you watched his expressions during the rest of play, he often seemed flat out dejected out there. Fortunately, i have a feeling that state won't be prevalent for him with more enthusiastic leadership.

Agreed, I think there is a good chance we get both.

At first blush, I would take McNeil as our PG of the future. He's quicker and a better passer than Ellis, but no where near the scorer. If we retain Ellis, and FIU donates McNeil and the JUCO PF, we go dancing.

+1

I hope that Rich isn't being hired to beat out Sun Belt schools and swoop in for academically marginal spring recruits.

The very fact we want to poach FIU recruits is the reason Tubby is long gone.....If a Big Ten school can't outrecruit the FIU's of the world it is time for a new coach

Mid major recruits are many times that for reasons other than skill level.

We don't have that many scholarships unless we see a guy on the current roster transfer. IMO the 1st priority should be Ellis and then if Pitino feels the need to bring another guy in he should go after him 2nd. Perfect situation would be if we could add an experienced graduate transfer point guard or power forward.

If we get Ellis to recommit, we still have 2 tenders left. I agree Ellis should be the priority.

There will be a nice flood of talent onto the free agent market this sprin.. with some of them immediately available.

Tarik Black the latest.. man.. gonna be a lot of possibilities.

Yes thats right but I believe everyone assumes we will bank at least one in order to have 3 scholarships available for 2014 and the big 3.

Any Big Ten ready PF's?

That Jonathan Holton dude sounded good, but I read somewhere else that he's in jail, or likely to be in jail...

Though Minnesota resides in the tough Big Ten, the job presents less of a reconstruction job than Pitino encountered at FIU. The Panthers’ lone NCAA appearance occurred before most current players can remember. Actual home fan attendance numbered in the hundreds. Player classroom attendance made the fan base look devoted — the program’s Academic Progress Rate for 2010-11 was 833, a number so low that combined with the APR for 2011-12 (yet to be released) could lead to FIU being banned from any postseason play next season.

The APR and 26 wins through three seasons prompted the firing of Isiah Thomas, an act several players thought was handled so badly, they protested by walking out of last year’s athletic awards banquet. Only six players remained from last year’s team, and not all of them were on scholarship.

Despite all this and being hired with the main recruiting period long past, Pitino cobbled together a team and coached a high-pressure defense that finished eighth in the nation in steals. One of Pitino’s first recruits, junior college transfer Tymell Murphy, led the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game and shot .573 from the field, the latter number ranking 17th nationally.

But junior guard Malik Smith, a junior college transfer and team leader who ranked 16th in the nation averaging 3.0 three-pointers per game, posted on Instagram on Wednesday night, “Thanks to FIU for the opportunity to do something special and help turn a program around. With that being said, I’ll be asking for my release some time next week and taking my talents to a different university. Coach Pitino helped show me what hard work was and I’ll forever appreciate it. Wish him and the rest of my teammates the best in the future. Everything happens for a reason.

FIU went 16-13 in the regular season. In the second game of the Sun Belt Conference tournament, the Panthers upset No. 1 seed Middle Tennessee State, which had a 17-game winning streak, to get to the final against Western Kentucky. Western Kentucky won 65-63 to get the conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament bid.

Thanks for posting. I wonder if he could play right away? And is he an off guard? I'm sure he'd find playing time but it's not necessarily a "need" with Dre and Austin already here.

While an off-guard might not be a pressing need, 3-point shooting certainly is.
