The Gophers need to get into the statue-erecting business too outside of Huntington Bank Stadium.

I'd go with 11 players (some sort of huddle) and two coaches (standing a bit apart from the players).

Players:
Nagurski
Smith
Giel
Bell
Eller
Widseth
Nomellini
Thompson
Winfield
Stephens
Ibrahim

Coaches:
Bierman
Warmath

Great idea!

They already have some names/numbers on the facing of the 2nd level plus there's a lot of photos and honors all throughout the concourse.

A statue should be for a select few that did something waaaay above and beyond. For example, I love everything Mo and Decker did but they shouldn't have a statue.

The UMN should do more statues of successful students/alumni, period. The problem is they are bogged down on finding problems with people and not realizing that the person's good qualities may have been enhanced by attending UMN.

It's is disheartening and offputting that the student body and administration want to tear down people who attended UMN. Who would want to attend a school that will tell you upfront that they will treat you like trash once you get a degree from them?

Pat Richter and Barry Statues have been in place for years. Think about that.

Exactly. The same applies to Hayden Fry's statue. Again, neither Fry nor Alvarez won a national title. But Murray Warmath did win one.

My question: Why is this true? Is there something about Minnesotans that makes us reluctant to celebrate success in the same way that Badger and Hawkeye fans do?

Maybe we Minnesotans see honoring our successes as 'showing off'...

I'm still waiting for my statue!

There's an entire Scholars Walk. Have you walked it and taken in all of the accomplishments our students and faculty??

That is right, and that is important and I'm very glad it exists.

That's not exactly what we're talking about here, though. We're talking about honoring Gopher football greats. And more specifically, I'm talking about why Minnesota does not honor our football greats in the same way that our rivals in Madison and in Iowa do.

Good grief, really? When was the last time you walked the campus?

Dude is talking about his rear. There's an awesome row of accomplishments by the students and faculty.

It's not out of your rear when, you have to be "of the Borg" to know about it and you are not "of the Borg".

I've been on campus for my daughter's HS graduation at Marriucci, my fraternity's alumni banquets in McNamara Center and to check out McNamara Center as a potential location to host an event in the last three years. There was no indication of any walk of fame for alumni.

As an alumni who was a student when the University shut down the General College, tried to destroy the football program by moving it off campus and generally treating undergrads like crap, I see a great deal of shame in the school and the student body exhibited from the Board of Regents on down.

Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Norman Borlaug has a great statue on the St. Paul campus.

I'm a grad twice of the U (bachelors and masters) and I get tons of info sent to me (emails and paper newsletters) from both of my colleges and my undergrad major. Many invites to college alumni events. My wife graduated from a different college at the U and likewise gets similar invites and has spoken on panels. My daughter is at the U now and absolutely loves it and is very proud to be a Gopher.

I really don't know where you're getting the shame thing from.

Like I said "of The Borg".

Good grief, no. My immediate family is three generations of grads with seven degrees among us. Going there changed my father's life tragectory, and therefore mine and my sons.

Like I said, open your eyes.

You say the right things but don't seem to be that engaged. I get so many emails and mail from the CoP, CEHD, athletic department on what is going on with current students, upcoming events and news (plus asking for money, of course) that I can't keep them straight.

If you're not aware what is happening on campus or aware of things recognizing past achievements, that's on you...not on the rest of us.
