The Gophers need to get into the statue-erecting business too outside of Huntington Bank Stadium.

It's not out of your rear when, you have to be "of the Borg" to know about it and you are not "of the Borg".

I've been on campus for my daughter's HS graduation at Marriucci, my fraternity's alumni banquets in McNamara Center and to check out McNamara Center as a potential location to host an event in the last three years. There was no indication of any walk of fame for alumni.

As an alumni who was a student when the University shut down the General College, tried to destroy the football program by moving it off campus and generally treating undergrads like crap, I see a great deal of shame in the school and the student body exhibited from the Board of Regents on down.
I was in General College for a year (my HS screwed up my application) what does that have to do with anything?

You are wrong on this one, very wrong, like supremely wrong. You should really drop this one.

I'm a grad twice of the U (bachelors and masters) and I get tons of info sent to me (emails and paper newsletters) from both of my colleges and my undergrad major. Many invites to college alumni events. My wife graduated from a different college at the U and likewise gets similar invites and has spoken on panels. My daughter is at the U now and absolutely loves it and is very proud to be a Gopher.

I really don't know where you're getting the shame thing from.
I only have undergrad and I as well get plenty of stuff...even when I wasnt in the Alumni Association.

If you're putting up a statue of a WR, it's Johnson over Decker and Bateman IMO. His senior season was probably the best season a WR has had in program history. In a season that resulted in probably the best overall season in 50 years. Love Decker and Bateman but Johnson has the edge IMO.

To me, I see 4 statues. Smith and Bronko. You win and Heisman or have a national award named after you, you're in

Bierman, Warmath. You coach a national championship team. You're in.

Everyone else can be recognized in other ways (as we already do around the stadium and in the football complex)

I think this is the most sensible approach to ensure statues maintain their rarity. I think Sandy Stephens is deserving, but there isn't an objective way to add Stephens without adding dozens more statues.

From the title of the Thread: "The Gophers need to get into the statue-erecting business too outside of Huntington Bank Stadium"

I take issue with the word "need".

If they want to, fine, but there is not any need to do any of this statue business.

My hunch is the poster (EWert86PC) brought up the General College being ditched because of the presumed notion it made it harder for Gopher Coaches to get jocks with borderline academic credentials into Dinkytown, thus harder for the U of M to compete in the Big 10.

I don't get the affinity for statues of sport's figures. Maybe one iconic statue, like the MJ statute outside united center where there's no question who it is, from afar or up close. Is there a Gopher FB icon?

Statues are otherwise overdone. Apparently getting a a big contract and sore knees is enough to get a statue at Target Field. Kirby Puckett might be deserving of a statue but its a horrible likeness.

Maybe a business opportunity for someone is to open a Gopher wax museum in one of the recently vacated businesses in dinky town. Make wax likenesses of as many former Gopher greats as you can fit. Charge a confiscatory rate to get in on game day.

What if a modern era coach won the Big Ten or Rose Bowl? statue or no? Say we went/won the Rose Bowl 2019 season. Would that of justified a P.J. Fleck statue in this era? like in the future when he was retired of course.

What is everyone's opinion on this?

The list of busts probably could have its own thread....but that might be depressing.
Indeed but it is part of our history. Not hiring Bud Wllkinson and ending up with Wes Fesler is number one. In the seventies I remember Sid talking about how Minnesota got the number two running back in Pennsylvania,. Number one was Anthony Dorsett who as a pro was Tony Dorsett with the cowboys. Buddy Holmes was ok with the Gophers but not great

Over the years we have gotten some good players out of western PA. I think its Milfred "Bubby" Holmes. Did not realize that he died last year. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/legacyremembers/milfred-bubby-holmes-obituary?id=55243866
