The Big Ten is weak and other myths...

Reality is that Tubby never got above .500 in the BT with his BEST team at Minnesota and never above 6th place.

Reality is that Richard Pitino never got above .500 in the BT with his BEST team at Minnesota and never above 7th place.

And yet, you're trying to sit here with a straight face and proclaim that things are, at present, better.

This year's results were worse than last year's. Fact.

Who said they weren't? Did those teams have the same players? Or did we lose 2 guys to pro basketball?

Here's another false comparison:

Texas Tech under Tubby Smith - 14-18 overall, no postseason
Minnesota under Rich Pit -23-13 overall, one win from NCAA, still playing in 4th round of NIT

Rich Pit had a better year. He has 9 more wins.

Oh, so the incessant Tubby-bashing is important?

I say we would have won a national championship. Disprove it.

You seem to find it important. It occupies all of your time trying to argue with 99% of posters on here.

We wouldn't have. DUH. Dear Lord, you do need meds.

Who said they weren't?

Um, bga1 did? "So far, so good"...and yet the results are inferior. Generally, when I'm happy with how things are, they are better than they used to be. Maybe that's just me.

OK - prove to me that we would've had a bad season. Go on - prove it.

Are you getting it yet?

Getting that you're a twat? Yes, I got that a long long time ago. As did everyone else.

Better yet, prove to me we would've won the national championship. What qualities and personnel would've pulled that off?

You should just go ahead and give yourself an hj, you are reaching so much. BGA was stating that he likes the trajectory of the team better now than his assumed trajectory had Tubby stayed. And you know it. The fact that last year's team sneaked into the tournament and beat a crappy UCLA team vs this year's team missing by one game is very much picking NITs. (See what I did there?) The seasons were quite similar and we had lost 2 guys to the pros.

You are looking stupid at this point, DPO, rather than just the usual petty.

9th place.

23-13 > 14-18

(Yeah, I would have ignored that part of my post too. If I were you.)

Getting that you're a twat? Yes, I got that a long long time ago. As did everyone else.

Ooh, name-calling! And misogynist, nonetheless! You're so goshdarn clever.

Better yet, prove to me we would've won the national championship. What qualities and personnel would've pulled that off?

I can't prove it. Exactly as you can't prove that this season would've gone poorly.

...you're not too bright, are ya?

Don't know, don't care. I have more important things to spend my time on than pointless theoretical exercises. How do you think this season would have gone if Rick Pitino were coaching here? That's just as relevant.

This is a Minnesota Basketball message board, what value does it have if all we are doing is regurgitating the stat sheets?

Your shtick is sooo over played its unreal. I'm quite impressed by your passion to stick with it through all possible situations.

Yeah, the seasons were quite similar, aside from the fact that one was demonstrably better.

And, as I've stated, pretending that you or anyone else knows what this year's season would've been like is living in fantasyland. That's not a surprise, as most of the posters here spend lots of time dreaming that Richard Pitino is the next John Wooden and that 5-stars are lining up around the block to play for the mighty Gophers. I just prefer living in reality.

You are looking stupid at this point, DPO, rather than just the usual petty.

Again with the name-calling. I love how people don't like the message, so they attack the messenger. Pretty typical.

9th place.

False. No matter how many times you say it. Why is it funny to you to make results appear worse than they actually were for the team of which you're allegedly a fan? 9th place? "Snuck in" to the tournament? Beat a "crappy" UCLA team? None of those things are true, and they make the Gophers appear worse, and yet you are proud of passing on these lies. Is it funny to you? Make you feel good about bashing your team?

Go ahead and make up all the pretend situations you want. Why do they have to be used to sh1t all over the former coach? Make you guys feel good about yourselves?

talk about letting things get personal. Why do you have this desire to defend Tubby so damn much, why does it hurt your feelings? If people want to sh1t on Tubby let them.

I'm not one of them.

You honestly have a screw loose if a bunch of Gopher Homers claim that Richard Pitino in one year is the second coming of jesus offends you. Most objective people know thats not true. Difference is we go on our way and disregard the shameless tubby bashing and you act a fool trying to defend the undefendable. Your on a gopher board for christ sake you will not win this fight. Its like sitting in a room vs a never ending horde of 2 ft robots with razor blades. You may kick a few to the side and get your licks in, but sooner than later you will die a horrible death of 10,000 razor cuts and the headline will read "killed by 2 foot robot with a razor blade" you lose no mater how heroic you felt. (what a reach for an analogy I've outdone myself)

Like I said, your shtick is sooo overplayed. We know you like complete objectivity, but this isnt the place to find that. Go read an almanac or something.

Yeah, the seasons were quite similar, aside from the fact that one was demonstrably better.

Similar doesn't mean exactly the same, DPO. Whether you want to admit it or not, the seasons were similar.

And, as I've stated, pretending that you or anyone else knows what this year's season would've been like is living in fantasyland.

Yes, of course. Or, no. Fantasyland has no basis in reality. What folks are doing here is taking the information available and speculating. If you don't want to do that, why don't you simply post stats about things?

Again with the name-calling. I love how people don't like the message, so they attack the messenger. Pretty typical.

Using adjectives is not necessarily name calling. Sorry that there is no teacher to which you can tattle.

When I play sports and my team is seeded in a tournament and we get the top seed, I consider that first place - whether or not other teams have the same record. If we get the 9th seed, I consider that 9th place. You have a different system. They sneaked into the tournament last year, whether you want to admit it or not. And UCLA was crappy. I don't bash my team. I live in reality. Last year was excruciatingly disappointing, your efforts to paint it otherwise, notwithstanding.

23-13 > 14-18

...you're not too bright, are ya?

Brighter than you are. But that's not a debate worthy of a message board.

You have a different system.

I, along with the rest of the world, do. The Gophers finished in 7th place, no matter what pretend stats you want to use. Again, why do you bash your own team? What is to be gained? You're a Gopher fan, right? What good does it do to disparage the legitimate accomplishments of the team, few as they are? Do you hate Tubby that much? Your indefatigable Tubby Smearing Campaign is so worth it to you that you willingly and knowingly take down your own team in the process?

Brighter than you are. But that's not a debate worthy of a message board.

Yeah, and I bet your dad can beat up my dad too.

Again, attacking the messenger because the message cannot be refuted. And I'm sure, in your luminescent genius, that you think it's a sound debating strategy.

I get the feeling that I'm going to check back in later and the thread will be... a). locked, or 2). be suddenly back to being two pages long.

Pot, meet kettle.

Why do I point out reality? Well, for one thing, I didn't want a coach who had checked out at the helm any more. I was seriously considering dropping my season tickets of nearly 20 years if he returned.

I do not hate Tubby in the least. He is a very, very good man who, at one point, was a very good coach. He doesn't want to work that hard any more. Is that a crime? Hardly. He's presumably got plenty of money in the bank. No, DPO, I cannot prove this. I suggest he retire and find something else he enjoys doing rather than chasing around 15 year old kids, which it appears he is tired of doing. This is majority opinion on this board.

The debate is kept alive by you and a few others that want to prop him up, rather than let the whole thing wither away - much like his coaching and recruiting. It is quite natural to compare the past with the present and quite normal to have an optimistic outlook, when things were clearly treading water before and now it appears the program has some life to it. Defending a coach that couldn't recruit and coach well enough to finish over .500 in the conference is a bit pathetic. I really don't give a rat's ass what the past history of the program is. That's a loser's mentality. Last year was a huge disappointment to almost everyone here. Deal with it.

Oh, and apparently calling someone "not too bright" is not name calling, but saying someone's comments are stupid is. Who knew?

23-13 > 14-18

9th place

Comically wrong. Go back and see who mentioned Tubby's name first. As I've said many times, I'd rather not discuss Tubby at all. When his name gets brought up, I'm going to defend his accomplishments. Don't like it? Tough. Don't bring up his name.

rather than let the whole thing wither away

Gladly. Tell your compadres that.

Defending a coach that couldn't recruit and coach well enough to finish over .500 in the conference is a bit pathetic.

So everyone on here defending Richard Pitino is a bit pathetic?

Last year was a huge disappointment to almost everyone here. Deal with it.

When have I ever once stated that I was pleased with the results from last year? Please cite it for me. That doesn't give you license to make things up about the actual results of last season.

Oh, and apparently calling someone "not too bright" is not name calling, but saying someone's comments are stupid is. Who knew?

I didn't call anyone anything. I asked a question.

9th place

Nope. No matter how many times you say it.

Are you incredibly petty, DPO? Anal and petty?

9th place.

So far, so good.

Tubby.

Sleeping.

And yet, you're trying to sit here with a straight face and proclaim that things are, at present, better.

I'm saying that the outlook is much better because of what Pitino did with this club (which I think is way better than Tubby would have done) and because of Pitino's energy. Those are my opinions. Look us all up here and tell us you told us so if Pitino goes for 6 years without cracking .500 or the top 5 in the conference. We will all be saying it didn't work out.

Yep. Exactly.

How about this...a 7th place tie with the following records against the teams we tied with:

Purdue 0-1
Illinois 1-2

That's a really strong 7th place. Really strong. Earth-shaking, even.

I wasn't aware that there are gradations of finishes. Seventh place is still seventh place. I never said 7th place was great or anything to aspire to. Seventh place is not ninth place, though, and will never be.

It's great to know that you guys are so proud of yourselves for running down the accomplishments of the Gophers.

Maybe you should cheer for an elementary school team where everyone finishes in first because they don't keep score. Some of us aspire to higher than 9th place. BGA nailed it above. This has nothing to do with Tubby, per se. We expect more and Tubby was given a fair chance. He didn't get it done. He was fairly compensated. Good riddance. If Rich Pit can't finish above .500 and wins one NCAA game in 6 years and falls asleep in the middle of games, I will be calling for his head too.

Don't be a petty, anal, foolish idiot. And don't be a defensive moron. Or a jackwagon. Or stupid. Or not bright. You aren't a dickwad, are you?

9th place.
