STrib: Titans hit field for TCF Bank Stadium battle: Coke vs. Pepsi

Had lunch at Pepito's on Nicollet today. They had MinneSoda on fountain. Anyone else had this before? The sticker said since 1945 but I've never heard or seen it. Like the local beers, it'd be cool to get local soda into TCF.

It'd be cool, but probably impossible. Coke pays a loooot of money to be the U's "one and only"

Good point, but Pepito's had Coke, Diet Coke, and three MinneSoda flavors -- the equivalent of Mtn Dew, Sprite & orange. So they must use the same distributor. Just as Bud dominates Target Field, yet allows for local brews, maybe Coke would allow for a local pop option, especially if they can get in on the distribution $$$.

Potentially. A quick search found me an FAQ on Purdue's pouring rights: http://www.eas.purdue.edu/news/newsletter/Coke-FAQ_8-23-10.pdf and this language:

All cold non-alcoholic beverages served, sold or sampled (distributed at no charge) on the West
Lafayette Campus must be Coca-Cola brands. The only exceptions are:
1. Freshly brewed on site, tea or coffee
2. Freshly squeezed on site, juice
3. Non-flavored, tap water.
4. Dairy
In addition, Purdue University cannot promote or display a competitor's logo and Coca-Cola
beverages should be served in their containers or approved cups. Approved cups are available
from the Food Stores department.

I imagine ours is about the same. Would a product distributed by Coca-Cola be the same as a Coca-Cola brand? I'm not sure but I doubt it. Stupid pouring rights contracts (although heck, $145 million isn't bad).

Since I don't drink pop/soda the big question for me will be which water choice - Dasani or Aquafina - will I be ignoring and going to the drinking fountain for free instead.

Captain and Jim Beam is best with diet coke, in my opinion.

In a meeting this afternoon, 4 of the 20 people grabbed a can of soda. 3 diet pepsi's and 1 diet coke, I would have guessed diet coke would have won.

I always chuckle when I'm in line at McDonald's and the fat woman ahead of me always orders a double quarter pounder, a large fry and a large diet Coke.

Maybe she's counting carbs not calories. There are 52 in a 16 oz coke and 42 in a single or double quarter pounder.

As for calories..

SS, didn't you know that the diet coke cancels out the calories in the pounder and fries?

I hear this comment from many people and I roll my eyes. The diet coke is still less calories and few people can tell the difference. If this person thinks this is a meal to lose weight and be healthy they are mistaken, but she still saved a few calories. Does it have to be all or none? Sounds like an excuse to laugh at fat people....not meant directly at you SS.

Shouldn't we then also laugh at the person that orders a salad and a chocolate malt?

You'll notice that a lot of fat people drink a ton of diet pop.

No offense taken, 19. I'm not exactly a skinny whipper! Just saying that when I see this it's almost always a large (better word choice) woman and not a large man.

If they're smart they are. A can of regular Coke has the equivalent of about 9 teaspoons of sugar. How many people would get 12 ounces of coffee and put 9 teaspoons of sugar in it? A couple of 16 oz cups a day put you near 30 teaspoons of sugar.

Too bad that calorie free "diet brownies" don't exist.

I suppose the gov't could always pass a law making it illegal to sell a Diet Coke larger than 16 oz.....oh wait.:)
