STrib: Jerry Kill and University of MN are parting ways after no agreement on role

From what I've heard, Kill did not raise anywhere near as much 'athlete's village funds' as some give him credit for.

FTR - reports are that the U wanted Kill, but Kill wanted something bigger and with more power than the U (rightfully) would give. No hard feelings. Folks should not view this as the U screwing Kill. Simply someone applying for a job that the employer didn't think he was qualified for.

A guy that spent only part of three to four years in any position on a power five team and had a losing conference record should be grateful for
the opportunity the U gave him and fold up his tents and go home. I grant he was a step above Brewster as a HC.

Correct.

The amount of misinformation spread and general ignorance of the U's fundraising enterprise (on this board and in the local media) are mind-boggling.

People listen and put up with Kill head football coach. Kill not the head coach? Not so much.

Any role Kill wanted at the U should be offered first to Glen Mason. Glen would be far better.

That is a clueless statement.

A step above Brewster, as a Gopher fan, you were damn lucky to have Kill.

I don't know if there is one positive category Kill leads Mason as a Gopher coach?

Considering the facilities Mason had its a wonder he did what he did.

His defenses have been better for the most part. Most have also said that Mason did not have a good relationship with local high school coaches. It also appears that Kill was generally involved in the community a lot more than Mason ever was. Just a few things that quickly came to mind.

Great points.

Community wise I would disagree; Mason was a heavy fund raiser and still a resident of this community 10 years after coaching his last game.

Mason's defenses notoriously sucked. Kills were competitive.

Kaler chimes in:

"Jerry Kill is an asset to the University of Minnesota athletics program and the broader community," Kaler said in a statement issued Wednesday. "Jerry and I had numerous extensive conversations about a potential role with the university, and we could not identify a full-time opportunity that met both his needs and those of the university."

Go Gophers!!

This speaks volumes about the University, President Kaler, and Ms. Goetz. Jerry Kill is everything they are not.

Kill said he would devote time to work on his foundation, Chasing Dreams, which supports the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota. Maybe that is his next calling, Kill said.

"I've had a bomb dropped on me," Kill said. "I hate losing. I feel like I'm losing today."..

Former deputy athletic director Beth Goetz is leading the department in an interim role.

She said Wednesday that the school would work to help Kill and the Gophers before the administration addresses the future of the coaching position.

"Our focus has been on him," Goetz said, "and what is best for Jerry and his family."

You could be right. It just seemed like Kill was out speaking at functions a lot. Maybe Brewster and Mason were doing the same, I just don't remember it being so.

Both Brewster and Kill did a better job keeping in state kids home, which has been attributed to their better relationships with local high school coaches (that's media reporting/speculation not my own). It was a huge deal when Brewster got Sam Maresh to stay home very early in his tenure and then Kill did the same thing with Jonah Pirsig showing that he was going to continue the trend of keeping kids in state. Over the last decade or so its been rare for the Gophers to lose in state kids they offered to Iowa or Wisconsin which is at least one step in a positive direction.

It speak volumes and obviously in a positive way for Goetz and Kaler.

Kill was a good coach and still hasn't gotten over the anxiety of losing that job. He wants a job with power, a good salary, and direct contact with "kids". There is no way that you can have him hanging around the players. As close as he and TC are, they still have philosophical differences on some points and Kill is not accustom to taking a backseat. The head coach has to be the sole guiding voice.

The U can't afford to just create some made up job for him that some enterprising U grad can handle at 1/10th the cost. And the have to hire that grad anyway to be his assistant because Kill won't do the detail work.

Time to move on, the U offered Kill some jobs and he didn't want those jobs.

Kill would be a poor hire at AD. Don't kid yourself, that is the position he wanted. The U offered alternatives. Kill didn't think they were good enough. I like JK as much as anyone, but the public outrage on how the U "couldn't find a position for Kill" is placing the blame for why he won't be around 100% on the wrong party. No issue with Kill wanting AD, Even less issue with the U not offering him that position.

In game adjustments. Recruiting.

Let's just say not everyone in the athletic dept was a fan of Kill.

Although we almost certainly will never get all the specifics I think you pretty much nailed it. Kill wanted something different then what the U was offering and the U wasn't willing to meet his requirements so both sides part ways and move on.

The people that are outraged by this are making way too big of a deal about it. The fascination some have about Kill really has been amazing to watch over the past few years. Some have put him on a massive pedestal even though I would bet most of them knew next to nothing about the guy prior to him being hired at the U when everyone else said no.

What leader doesn't have detractors? Goes with the territory. Especially in this day and age where every person finds a way to be offended there is little doubt he rubbed them the wrong way.

Some fans want to look at their coach as a deity. In this case you had fans insisting Kill was Joe Paterno without ever winning a bowl game.

Can you please elaborate

Please elaborate on Glen Mason being a better fit for U for a position in the AD. Coach Kill and the U have parted ways so I think that whatever opportunity there was for Coach Kill to continue a relationship with the U is past.
I'm glad they did not consider a football centric or football based position in the AD, the last thing a new head football coach needs is the old coach looking over their shoulder.
