Jerry Kill and the University of Minnesota have parted ways, according to people familiar with the situation.

Interim athletic director Beth Goetz has had several conversations with Kill since he retired as football coach for health reasons Oct. 28 about his next role at the university, but they did not reach an agreement.

Reached for comment Wednesday, Kill told the Star Tribune that he spoke to university President Eric Kaler on Monday and the two agreed that Kill would not have a permanent position at the university. Any work Kill does for the school moving forward would be as an independent contractor.

“I visited with the president, and it was very professional in manner,” Kill said. “He would like me to speak on behalf of the university, raise money and teach a class or two. I really appreciate that offer, but I want to be involved with athletics. I’ve been involved with athletics my whole life, and I want to be around the kids more than anything.

“That wasn’t part of the offer. I understand that, but that was the deal-breaker for me.”

Go Gophers!!

He will be missed. They don't make a lot of 'em like him! Unique human being, fantastic human being. Can't wait for his book and to follow the rest of his career. Minnesota was darn lucky to have him.

Go Gophers!!

What kind of position would there be for him in the athletic department that isn't extremely demanding?

Interesting. So what type of position does he expect that will let him interact with the "kids", has no pressure and still pays him the kind of money he wants? Locker room attendant, equipment assistant, consular, water boy, etc won't pay him anything. Also, TC loves the guy, but it is time to let TC do things his way without Kill hanging around.

Seems like it was a no win situation with the conditions that he wanted.

In the end this is probably the best case scenario for everyone. Claeys doesn't have Kill's shadow looming over everything and Kill seems like he will have plenty of outside opportunities available to him. In the grand scheme of things for the U I don't think it really mattered either way if he took a background role or left.

Good, now Claeys can go on without wondering if Kill is looking over his shoulder, and Kill can move on to whatever the next phase of his life will be. Got no problems with this.

If anything

B Goetz probably just earned some stripes. JK comes to the table with an attitude/contract of leverage and Goetz said 'No.'

Well, we can't be upset with the U on this one anymore.... they offered him a very well paying job in a capacity that we all had suspected they should offer him.

It occurs to me, that he wants to be the assistant athletic director (or whatever position Goetz was in under 'mega tongue')

Maybe one of the classes he could teach is "Student Athlete responsibilities class", mandatory for all student athletes.

I was hoping they would create a position "Director of Student Athlete Success" and let him mentor athletes in all sports, speak on life and career planning, etc. But perhaps he would want more involvement in day to day operations of athletics/football than that as well.

Agree with what the others have said. I was hoping he would be a fundraiser. Claeys is the head coach so tough to have Kill around the team and not be HC.

I think Jerry is still adapting to the idea that coaching is bad for him. Many recently retired, voluntary or otherwise go through a tough transition phase.

Ahhh, Doogie being objective as always....must be training to be Reusse's replacement when Pat decides to hang it up here at some point.

I have no strong opinion on this, with one exception: The university could not have allowed him to interact with the football team.

No big deal. Time for Kill to just enjoy that cabin in Illinois. Clayes needs to shed the ghost of Jerry anyway.

Boy Doogie whining. Now I know we made the right choice.

At this stage of the game why would Kill do something he has no interest in, it wouldn't make any sense to me, I would say it is time for him to be super choosy about what he does next.

This is the kind of model that may have best utilized him.

I like the assitant AD title "Director of Student Athlete Achievement." The goal leaving the University with a degree for as many student athletes as possible.
Mandatory classes would have been related to a typical schedule of a student athlete and the demands on there time in season and out of the season. Seminars would have included the fact that so few athletes have professional opportunity's to play professional sports in the games they are on scholarship for, even though many athletes view themselves in that role for professional careers. Would have been nice for this role to try and foster not just mentorships within the University community but perahap's relationships and internships within the business community that could have opened doors of opportunity for them to develop relationships they may not get a chance to otherwise. (Foot in the door or at least an overview of what real corporate and business life is like. As a strong leader, I would have thought coach Kill would have flourished in a role that helps the young adults make connections they may otherwise not have had the opportunity to either. I'm not talke cake or just pay jobs either that do nothing, roles that involve real world learning of day to day operations, planning.

Perhaps coach Kill wanted a more football centric role that allowed him input in to the funding of the football program, coaching Salary's, travel budgets, tutoring budgets, recruiting budgets, as well as the ability to host youth camps and all levels of football on campus, and things of that nature. Hard to say really though what kind of input he wanted in football but I think it was football related as to why they could not agree.

Ya, Ok Doogie. Why don't you figure it out then. He continues to be one of TC media members I like the least.

People listen and put up with Kill head football coach. Kill not the head coach? Not so much.

Any role Kill wanted at the U should be offered first to Glen Mason. Glen would be far better.

When the head coach leaves for whatever reason he needs to be gone. Like divorcing your wife and then keeping her on as your accountant. I tried to do just that but my new wife strongly suggested it might not work well for me.

Maybe, but they held the same job at the U already and Kill was better at that one, so I'm not sure I buy this.

Good luck finding someone who agrees with you[emoji41]

LOL. I love a good Kill/Mason debate.

Truth is I posted something early in this thread that was not supportive of Kill on this topic and it was promptly removed so I better not try that again [emoji3]

I don't know if there is one positive category Kill leads Mason as a Gopher coach?

Considering the facilities Mason had its a wonder he did what he did.
