State Basketball Tournament

Haha "You're not clutch!" right before he drops a step back 3 for the win. That shot was nice, just dropped in there so clean.

A shot clock is not the issue nothing stopped Hopkins from running a zone offense but themselves. A shot clock would most likely encourage teams to play more zone defense because it usually takes more time to get off open shots against a zone. Last night was about a coach who was willing to run it down like it or not. I cant imagine in a tie game with 4 minutes to play having my team sit on the ball that long. I would have faith in my team to run our zone offense until you get off a good shot. Hopkins had the more talent on the floor last night and allowing the game and the chance at a title to come down to one or two possessions like they did was insane. It worked because a half court shot went in but it could have easily gone the other way if Hopkins turns the ball over late and Shokapee hits a shot.

Shakopee's coach said they never play man to man...well that is a bad coaching strategy when there is no shot clock in Mn. prep ball. Hopkins had a better chance to score then to turn it over vs Shakopee Zone. Pretty much a vote of no confidence in his players by coach Kugath. Kugath pretty much was betting that Hopkins do something stupid rather than trying to get a stop/possession and a chance to win

I guess I see it more as a vote of no confidence of Novak in his players. If I'm coaching against a team that's far more talented than mine, like Shakopee was, I'm happy to take my chances in a one-possession game. Hopkins held the ball for about 15 minutes total -- almost a full half. The longer you play, the better the chances that the better team wins. Novak was telling his team, "I don't trust you." From Shakopee's side, they already knew they were underdogs. Legal move by Novak, but a dumb one.

I don't think we need a shot clock, because this kind of stalling doesn't happen much anymore. It's was within Novak's right to make that call, but it's within my right to ridicule him every chance I get now.

With overtime winding down and the score tied the team with the ball is now a slight favorite ... who ever was the big favorite coming in to the game is now irrelevant .

If all you do is play zone then you are doing a disservice to your players development. That coach deserved everything he got. I feel bad for the players that they have to play for a guy like that. How are you supposed to improve as a defender if you sit in a zone all day?

No because in basketball the defense can dictate the pace of play as well. It takes two to sit on the ball in basketball.

So you disagree with the shot clock at all levels of play then?

I don't agree nor do I disagree. It is what it is. The higher levels have chosen to utilize it. Most high schools have not. It's not a big deal and it goes unnoticed 99% of the time.

Just saying that Hopkins isn't the only bad guy. Shakopee allowed it to happen.

Do any of you recall Khalid El Amin playing for North and literally holding the ball near half court for about four minutes during his North's State Tournament championship. The slow downs you are whining about have taken place since the day that Naismith invented the game. It's a part of the strategy of the game. If you wish to change the strategies then add a shot clock. Basketball has added rules that change strategies in the past. Adding the 3 point line has changed strategies significantly. Now, we see offenses that dribble drive to the basket for shot near the rim or they kick out for a 3 point shot. Defenses defend the paint or the line, but dare you to take a mid-range shot because that represents the lowest percentage shot for the number of points allowed. This is precisely why we don't see anyone becoming adept at hitting a 15 foot shot. Strategies have changed.

The question is: Do we change rules/strategies for the sake of keeping spectators entertained or do we change them to adjust to the skills of the players?

I'm pretty sure El-Amin was holding it more like a minute, not 4, from what I recall, and not entire multple OTs and such, but point taken. I think it's on the defense to make them at least make plays to maintain possession, not just sit back and watch it happen. I'd probably prefer a shot clock, but that's mostly aesthetics for me watching it, not the skill of the players. If both teams are find standing around on the court for minutes on end, then more power to them I guess. But it's most definitely a conscious decision on both sides, not just offensively.

About last night, how about the shot Macura made at the buzzer.....talk about outstanding!!!!!! That is the recruit that we missed that really hurts. A step back NBA three at the buzzer that hits nothing but the bottom of the net.....WOW!!!!!!!!!

Great shot! However, not so sure we missed. I don't think I'd complain about him, but from the video I saw, he seemed like he had weak ball handling skills and looked a little awkward moving without the ball too. Granted it was a low sample size.

These crazy kids with their neon shoes. Also not sure why Lakeville kids are wearing baby blue socks.

I really like the way Macura plays. I feel we missed out big time on him.

Wow I really like Macura. Damn he just nailed some good shots. He would have seen a lot of floor time next year for the gophers.

Amir a stud too. Must sign him and put him in maroon and gold

Wow what an ending to the 4A Title Game. Lakeville down four, got a foul call on a made three, missed extra free throw but rebounded the miss and scored to take the lead. Amazing.

Tyus is the only one I'd take of the so called big 3 over Macura. And if you think otherwise, you're wrong.

Vaughn is a one and done special talent. Best of the 4 hands down. Macura is damn good though.

Hell of a big 4 leaving the state...shame we couldn't get any of them.

Yeah I would put Vaughn as #1 of the 4. But Macura is damn good and should be right up there in discussion with the other three. Would have loved to have him as a gopher

Macura is a great high school player. One great game on the biggest of stages may make people get a little carried away. He still is number four in the state.imo Watched Henry Ellerson the last two days in the Wis tourhy and whle I realize there in different classes I would take JP over him anyday. Tough ending for the hated Hopkins. Just listening to Kevin Lynch could sense his bias. against the evil empire. Is Lynch a big booster of the U? Guys like him and Jim Peterson don't seem to have much love or loyalty for the U. Even Trent Tucker doesn't seem to ever even mention the Gophers.

Did Novak set a record for complaining on every call?

Just my observation: Sure wish our D1 Gopher studs could throw free throws like these high schoolers.

Macura put those points up against a very good high school defense, probably one of the better defenses at that level, very impressive.
