State Basketball Tournament

Nevermind

St. Cloud Apollo with Nate wolters in 2009 played hopkins that had Royce white and that great group. If the shot clock would have existed Apollo would have been beaten by 30 or more. Is that fair to their fans and players?

It's not about fair...

College game is irrelevant, there are how many high school basketball players in the state of Minnesota? How many play college basketball? Mshsl does not exist to make sure that tiny percentage is better prepared for college basketball.

Basketball is a game of strategy, holding the ball is a winning strategy. Running offense and scoring a ton of points doesn't make the game better. It doesn't make it worse either, I just want to hear a rational argument about Minnesota getting a shot clock that will help the entire state get better at basketball. I don't care if a bunch of recently graduated or middle aged men aren't entertained, that's not important
I'm not arguing it isn't a good strategy and I said it was smart for Hopkins to do that but I just don't think it should be able to happen so I guess were gonna just have to agree to disagree.

Hopefully we can see Amir hit shots like that in the future at The Barn for the Gopher in the future.

All Shakopee had to do was apply an ounce of pressure to get them to play.

This shot clock debate is similar to the ncaa considering the rule change in football about snapping the ball. If a team wants to run fast do it, if a team wants to take the air out of the ball and the game to give themselves a better chance to win than do it. I would rather watch a competitive game than 30-40 point blow outs

It's a little different when you bleed 15 minutes off of the clock. You could call it a strategy I guess, but you're just avoiding playing basketball because you know you're undermatched.

Why isn't it similar to the ncaa considering a rule change to adopt a shot clock?

How about just in the last 2 minutes at least?

I suppose it could be. I just don't see the positives and I don't know many coaches that agree that a shot clock is needed. People are free to have their opinion as am i

So a competitive game is all that matters? The last hour of that game (real time not basketball time) wasn't basketball. Holding the ball at halfcourt (which made total sense despite Kevin Lynch's appeal) isn't basketball. It was fitting that Hopkins won it on a fluke shot because both teams decided to stop playing solely because their wasn't a shot clock.

Nope just fans entertainment

Highschool definetly needs a shot clock... Idk care if it's a 90 second shot clock. Holding onto the ball isn't basketball

I'm not arguing fans entertainment. How was that a test of the players skills? Nothing happened for 4 overtimes and Hopkins won it on a fluke shot. That's not basketball.

Some act as if this is a new strategy? It's been going on forever. I remember watching a game that ended 19-16. Was it boring as a fan? Absolutely. Was it necessary to win? Absolutely! A coaches responsibility is to do whatever it takes for their kids to have success. Sometimes another team has better jimmies and joes and to even things up a strategy like holding the ball can make any Goliath beatable. Fans and spectators don't matter, having a chance to play another day is everything

If you were there at that game - how would you feel> I know how I would feel...Shot clock needed.

I think the MSHSL and their ticket prices disagree.

Obviously they should have a shot clock. But I was equally annoyed by the timeouts. Let the players play. Coaches drawing up plays is highly overrated.

Agreed. When former Gopher Randy Breuer played at Lake City in the late 70's their opponents did it to them all the time. It was boring and frustrating, but the only way they had any chance to win.

You don't think they're making any money?

I really doubt mshsl is making significant dollars from state basketball. I could be wrong because I have never looked into the numbers, but the cost of running the boys and girls state tourney, I have a hard time believing there is much money left over.

I don't know either, just kind of assumed since its like $10 per head over the course of multiple days. They get a fairly good turnout too.

Yeah, I don't see the point of a shot clock. While we're at it, we might as well get rid of the football play clock. I'd much rather see Leidner hand off to Cobb for a two yard gain, then sit on the field for the rest of the half until we can attempt a field goal in the waning seconds. That's what football should be. After all, it's a game of strategy.

What we witnessed tonight is not how the game of basketball was meant to be played. Some call it tactical, I call it boring and cowardly. I was embarrassed for Novak tonight, IMO.

To those who have watched hopkins this year. Have they held on to the ball a lot? If shakopee would have gone man to man would hopkins have continued to sit on the ball? Why not be upset about zone?

So teams are forced to actually play basketball and run offense rather than hold the ball for 3 1/2 minutes because a team is sitting in a zone and they want the last shot. Also probably makes the adjustment to the college game a little easier if you have already been playing with a shot clock too.

+1
