State Basketball Tournament

Shakopee was guilty of stalling by sitting in a cowardly zone. Get out and play defense.

To those who have watched hopkins this year. Have they held on to the ball a lot? If shakopee would have gone man to man would hopkins have continued to sit on the ball? Why not be upset about zone?

I definitely get your point of view and respect it greatly. I just don't see how what we watched tonight is good for the game. Heck...lets go hockey on it and just pick 3 guys to shoot free throws?

Shakopee is just as guilty if not more. Play defense and Hopkins can't sit back. Why wouldn't you hold for the last shot if the other team isn't playing defense?

If Shakopee wasn't playing defense, then you'd think it would be easy to score against them.

I came out of watching that game with the notion that Hopkins is completely incapable of playing against a zone. Therefore, it would be a good tactic to play that against them.

Shakopee didn't give themselves a chance to win by sitting back in that zone. End of story. Hopkins wins.

Essentially, Novak was daring the other coach to come out of the zone - and the Shakopee coach refused.

Personally, I would like to see a shot clock in HS - not for rare situations like tonight - but because I think it would (hopefully) cut down on some of the late-game fouling when the games turns into "free-throw derby." If you're down by a couple of points - but you know you're going to get the ball back thanks to the shot clock, you may choose not to foul - just play good defense, get a stop, and run your offense on the other end. I just hate it when the last 2 minutes of the game take 15 minutes to play because the team that's behind keeps fouling to stop the clock and get the ball back.

to stop the late game fouling you have to let teams decline the free throws. You should never gain an advantage by fouling.

Ken Novak disrespected the game of basketball tonight and was dang lucky to win. Being big favorites, with all the skilled athletes he chose a chicken way strategy.

It was a lucky shot, but he was not lucky to win. If another team gives you the last shot. You take it every time.

Ya, he "disrespected" the game of basketball. No... AAU did that long ago.

How? The Shakopee coach was so intent on running his zone that he refused to challenge the ball. What coach wouldn't hold for the last shot if given the option? In a couple of the overtimes it almost looked like the top of the zone extended out until Chambers got the ball when they would pull back. Almost challenging Hopkins to hold onto it. This one's on Shakopee.

Hopkins was big favorites, had a very high scoring average, and were humbled by Shakopee's defense! Playing for the last shot with 30 seconds is a lot different than sitting on the ball for 6 minutes. It was lovely bb to watch = how many other coaches would want their kids to sit down and not play the game. Oh how fun it was for them not to try to score!

This shot clock debate is similar to the ncaa considering the rule change in football about snapping the ball. If a team wants to run fast do it, if a team wants to take the air out of the ball and the game to give themselves a better chance to win than do it. I would rather watch a competitive game than 30-40 point blow outs

I think the NCAA and NBA should get rid of the shot clock because I hate watching teams move, shoot, and jump.

Games are much better the score finishes 6-4, and we can watch people do nothing all day. I'd let my kids play that game, and I'd pay to see it in person.

Apparently Shakopee's coach did. Seems like you just keep ignoring that little nugget.

They said in the broadcast that Minnesota has the highest average HS basketball scores in the country.

Don't get the big favorites part. Do you really think Louisville was embarrassed that they had to grind out a win against Wichita St. last year to make it to the finals? In a single elimination tournament the only thing that matters is advancing.

Oh how fun it was for them not to try to score!

Try extending the zone/forcing the issue. What sane coach isn't going to hold for the last shot when the other team has no interest in playing defense beyond the three point line?

How many other states play 36 minutes?

There does seem to be a lot of teams that can get up and down and more scorers than usual.

What happened to him? Wrong end of a buzzer beater in High School?

St. Cloud Apollo with Nate wolters in 2009 played hopkins that had Royce white and that great group. If the shot clock would have existed Apollo would have been beaten by 30 or more. Is that fair to their fans and players?

It's not about fair...

Wolters played for Tech not that it's extremely relevant. Novak would be ripped if they'd lost. He wanted them to guard him man to man. Well within the rules and it worked tonight.

Yeah, I don't see the point of a shot clock. While we're at it, we might as well get rid of the football play clock. I'd much rather see Leidner hand off to Cobb for a two yard gain, then sit on the field for the rest of the half until we can attempt a field goal in the waning seconds. That's what football should be. After all, it's a game of strategy.

A perfect example.

With the second game that was played last night this is what you guys want to talk about? Jeez.......have you ever heard of Dean Smith? He used to do this all the time....even with Jordan and Worthy on his team. Dean Smith is probably the main reason we have a shot clock in college basketball.

About last night, how about the shot Macura made at the buzzer.....talk about outstanding!!!!!! That is the recruit that we missed that really hurts. A step back NBA three at the buzzer that hits nothing but the bottom of the net.....WOW!!!!!!!!!

I remember watching North Caroline holding the ball just about the last 12 minutes of a game against Virginia when North Carolina had both Worthy and Jordan and Virginia when they had Ralph Sampson.

I missed the end of this game, is there video somewhere?

Thoughts from a strange night on press row at Target Center.

Re: the first game: I'll admit to being a bit miffed at the instigator (Hopkins has been the target of many stall attempts, including Nate Wolters' St. Cloud Tech team), but I have never been a proponent of a shot clock in high school. I saw nothing last night that would change my mind on the matter.

The MSHSL needs to buy a true neutral floor to use at Target Center and Mariucci Arena before they even think about adopting the shot clock. Kids spotting up from the NBA 3-point line has a much bigger effect on their tournament games than the lack of a shot clock.

Both teams being colder than the other side of the pillow meant that the second game (Lakeville North-Cretin) was absolutely terrible for the first 34 minutes. The buzzer-beater hid Macura's really stupid 4th foul, which was an unsportsmanlike conduct T.

Lakeville North and Hopkins students AGAIN fail to show up for the evening session. Shakopee's student section was about twice as large as the other three put together.

Your agenda against Shakopee is funny.

Don't you live in Shakopee? I had no dog in this fight. I dislike Hopkins' recruiting, but lots of schools do that now.

If you are going to put a team in a situation where they can win the game, but have basically no chance to lose, what coach is not going to take that scenario?
