We need a thread dedicated to just how awful that incomplete pass call reversal was.

Just watched the video several times. It wasn’t a catch. The video very clearly shows both toes had already left the turf by the time the ball arrived.

The problem I have with it, is what ever happened to clear and obvious. The ref that was like 12 feet away had a much better view than the replay was in the snow. Glad it didn’t matter. Just an irritant in the long run.

That’s the thing for me — and it’s not even about this particular play. “Clear and obvious” (or whatever they say now) should just be taken out of the rule. Replay has become about microseconds, angles not even available to the broadcast, and scrutinizing frame by frame. I’m all for getting calls right, but it’s gotten crazy. They should either a) take out that language, b) actually start officiating that way, or c) put a time limit on reviews to encourage going with the call on the field unless wildly obvious.

At the game I thought he stepped out FIRST then was the first to touch the ball, illegal touching.

I had a very clear view from most of the way up, midfield, lower level ...

There was far greater evidence to overturn the Oregon touchdown pass than this incompletion call. The inconsistency is the major issue no matter the standard applied.

I thought the same, that his left foot was initially out and he then stepped back in bounds.

I don’t think it’s that clear. Part of the shoe is red so it’s pretty hard to tell 100%. Also I’d love to see a replay of the long pass to set up the TD, pretty sure the play clock expired prior to the snap.

I believe officials are bad. I don’t believe there is a conspiracy

I think every conference should adopt the ACC model of including the conversation between officials and the replay booth in the broadcast. Much more transparent and more interesting than listening to a washed up ref/“rules analyst” babble on about what he thinks the call will be.
