"Save" Gopher Football strikes again

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of

Quote: "I have no knowledge of who they're going after," he said. "It's ridiculous." Yet he takes it upon himself to email the Temple AD and forwarn them of Maturi's "tactics" and that he may be trying to lure Golden? What a joke. Adam Kelly, this is one of the most unprofessional acts I have heard of in a long time. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Gopher football does not want or need you.

And by the way, with regards to SDSU, all Hoke would have had to say is, "not now, will talk later when the season is over." Rip Maturi, but it takes two to tango.

Yeah, I agree that the quote is the stupidest thing about it all. What exactly is Kelly calling "ridiculous"? Does he think it's "ridiculous" that he does not know who they are "going after"? That doesn't sound ridiculous at all to me. It's obvious he is just out to satisfy his personal vendetta against Joel.

They have no confidence in Joel Maturi and neither do I. I predict we will get an underwhelming hire and be playing in front of a half full TCF next year. This guy has simply been awful. Glen Mason should never have been fired.

Miss. Mason?!? Again, stop posting in favor of your husband. He is a has been and a very mediocre coach that most Gopher Fans hate and are glad he is gone. Refrain from posting on this site again in favor of having your husband coach the Gophers.

Sincerely

The State of Minnesota

Hold-up. Kelly looks legit, and he obviously knows what he's doing. Turns out he tried-out for 9 NFL teams! (LOL, and he actually puts this in his profile!)

I have, in addition to emailing my displeasure to savegopherfootball.com, informed Dunn Insurance of my disgust at Adam Kelly's disgraceful behavior. I would encourage others to do the same at the link above.

The new AD issue is overblown considering the new coach will likely have a hand in the process of selecting the new AD should he be high profile enough.

Bingo. Precisely the reason I wanted Bellotti, who, having been an athletic director for a short time probably has a good idea of what characteristics an athletic director should have at a place trying to become very serious about football.

I have less of a problem with Maturi than most because it's his job to run an entire athletic department. I realize the revenue sports are at the front of the line, but he's tried to keep a broad range of athletic opportunities available to a wide range of students and that decision is likely coming from people above his pay grade.

Do I think Maturi is up to the task of selecting a new coach? Yes and no and I too have become somewhat concerned about the process, but I'm too old to go batty about these things.

I would say that our M-Club footballers, largely composed of people who weren't particularly good at the game given our W/L over the past 40 years, seem to believe they know a lot more about this and want to throw their weight around to an extent (that at least in this particular instance) that I have yet to witness in my 50+ years of sports fandom. This is truly embarrassing.

I think the group would function better if they chose a more apt name. Instead of "Save Gopher Football" perhaps "Save M Club Bobos" would make more sense. Just sayin'...

And I agree with 50PH's last paragraph as well. Spot on.

It looks as if we have a small handful of former players pretending that they represent players as a whole. The face of this "group" is a punter from 25 years ago? If this group had more support, it wouldn't have to be SaveGopherFootball.com, it would be the M Club itself doing the fighting. But they don't have nearly enough support for that.

We've gone down this road before, we hired Salem because he was a former player. We hired Gutekunst because the players supported him,

It seems to me that savegopherfootball.com is looking for any reason to criticize Maturi.

The fact that they would try to prevent us from getting Golden (With the hopes Maturi hires Trestman) is disgusting!

Exactly. I bet if Maturi would have asked the ADs' permission to speak with Hoke and Golden, this nutty group would have criticized him for ASKING permission first! They would have said how lame Maturi is for asking permission, that big time programs don't operate that way, etc. These people are really disgusting.

Surely if they had more widespread support, they could get someone better than a former punter as their spokesman. A QB or a running back would carry a lot more weight.

This is Golden Gopher Football. In a way this group reflects everything that's wrong with the last 50 years of Gopher football. We have an over-matched AD, who already screwed up once, trying his best to fight his indecisive nature and make a bold move. And instead of helping him, our alumni group goes to war with him and tries to undermine him. With their only goal being to back him into a corner where he has to take their guy, who happens to be a terrible candidate and would be a death-knell to the program among 97% of Minnesotans. Great job guys.

I agree 100% with the poster who said that if this idiot were my insurance agent, he would not be on Monday. What an absolute clown. This self-serving group needs to just play in the sandbox and keep their mouths shut. You weren't relevant before, and now you are known...but only as a joke and an embarrassment. I wish you would quit taking all of Gopher FB down with you!

There seems to be a group, which this "save" "gopher" "football" seems to be a part of, that wants this program to achieve mediocrity and nothing more. I think they fear nation-wide recruiting, and any sort of progress this program makes on a national scale. I don't know if they fear that they'll be forgotten or what...but something's up. They have a real agenda, and it's not in the best interest of this program. Luckily they have zero power and don't matter at all, or else they could be dangerous and relevant. For now, they'll have to settle for annoying and embarrassing. They're probably all buddies with Trestman and think they can land cushy coaching jobs if he's hired.

And if Maturi backs down and hires their guy, and he turns out to be a bust, these people won't own up to the part they played in this.

Let's put it simply...

I do not believe that Maturi contacted Hoke without the SDSU AD's permission. I do not believe Maturi contacted Hoke at all. Maturi talked to Hoke's agent. That's the way it is done--everywhere.

Hoke's comments about being contacted were out of context. He talked to his agent.

Mr. Kelly is as ignorant as his email.

Maybe we should just hire their guy (Trestman) and see how it plays out. When he inevitably fails, these clowns and Bob Sansevere will shut the eff up forever.

We've been awful for 43 years. It would almost be worth making it 46 years to be done with the Trestmaniacs.

We've not been awful for 43 years. We've been pretty good at times, just never good enough to win the conference title. But no, if Trestman turned out to be a flop, there's no way that this would shut them up. They would just be at it the next time, and the next time and the next time.

I know it wouldn't shut them up. I was being flip.

And I'd say the "awful" stretches far outnumber the "pretty good" stretches. Just my take at the moment, though. The whiskey from last night may be tainting my perspective.

Perhaps some former players should start a website called SupportGopherFootball.com

Golden Gopher Fan Creed

Be Proud: Wear maroon and gold to every sporting event
Be Loud: Cheer loudly for the Gophers and not against our opponent from beginning to end
Be Golden: Show that we are the best fans in the nation by behaving responsibly, being respectful of others, and encouraging others to do the same.

Who forgot to read the creed!

Maybe we need a "savedunninsurace.com" website?

Dear savegopherfootball.com.

GFY.

I just received the following response from Steve Nestor:

Adam Kelly is not a spokesman nor a representative of our group, thank you, SRN

Looks like we have a rogue punter on our hands. What a bitter doooooosh!

I did respond and ask who their members are. Clearly Steve Nestor is playing a primary role, but I mentioned in my e-mail that they have a number of player quotations on the site but no clear listing of membership, leadership, etc. I'd like to know who they are.

I also told him the time for damage control on their part is now if they want to ever have a seat at the table in future discussions of the direction of Gopher football. Then again, perhaps that bridge has already been burned.

Adam Kelly is an embarrassment to Gopher Football. Why try to sabotoge something he knows little about? It doesn't add up. This idiot punter isn't playing with a full deck of cards.

This sort of behavior makes me wonder what other negative things these guys may be up to that we haven't heard about yet. Food for thought.

"The former players at the University of Minnesota would like to offer our apologies in advance if our Athletic Director Joel Maturi attempts to contact your football coach without your AD's knowledge," the e-mail read. "As much as your coach is GREAT, our former players believe that ADs should be contacted and asked for permission."

He's either speaking for some 'group', or he is lying.
