rumor mill.......jd speilman

They can’t block transfers...he is free to go wherever he wants.
Not true, for undergrad transfers. Marcus Carr, for example. Plus also, I think the Big Ten has additional rules beyond the NCAA that govern inter-conference transfers.

STrib article today on Minnesotans at other programs:

TCU WR JD Spielman (Eden Prairie): After transferring from Nebraska, Spielman has caught five passes for 56 yards on a 6-4 Horned Frogs team.

I mean .... that can't be what Rick envisioned for this year?? That ain't gonna help nobody get drafted.
He did get hurt in the 3rd game and missed the rest of the year but I wouldnt be surprised if he transferred again.

Didn't know that, haven't followed him. Even with only two full games though, only five receptions? Maybe 10 targets? That's clearly not a featured piece in the offense.

I dont know alot about the situation but Im guessing lack of practice time put him behind to start the year.

Do they run a crazy offense? I mean, he's a great receiver who should have a pretty good idea about route concepts, blocking technique, and the like.

But anyway, I suppose it was a factor.

Transferring to a Big Ten school was never on the table. I don't know if Neb/Frost just laid down that law from the git go, or if the Spielman's put that out there as a courtesy or carrot for them not to fight it. One way or another, that was the deal, apparently.
Absolute baseless conjecture followed by the declarative statement “One way or the other, that was the deal, apparently.” And throws in the “apparently“ as a cya.

Plenty of B1G guys transfer within the conference. Spielman didn’t want to be here.

I'd throw a scholarship at him to get him here. It's only for a year and if he is on, he is pretty good.
I would agree with Bob on this one. Good punt returner and may need some leadership in the Receiver room or if nothing else be a good role model for the others.

Oh yeah, get all up in my taint. What you’re good at.

Why does that prove that Nebraska/Frost was powerless to prevent JDS specifically from transferring within the Big Ten?

You don’t believe it. That’s fine. Maybe you’re right. I have no inside info/proof.

TCU really struggled to throw the football, so it wouldn't be surprising from that standpoint if JD was looking to move on. The surprsing thing to me is that JD just turned 23, he'll be 24 by the NFL Draft if he decided to play another college season. I think he'd be a great addition to the Gophers but it would kind of surprise me if he played another college season especially with a GM for a father. He's listed at 5'9 167 and would be considered "overaged" for the 2022 draft. That's not a great spot to bei n. Of course coming off not much production and an injury, he's likely a UDFA this year and could get back in to draft with a big Grad Transfer year next year. The funny thing is the Vikings desperately need a punt returner and he'd have a great chance at making his dads team as a UDFA if he ended his college career and entered the draft.

A Jerry Kill offense struggled at throwing the ball?!!! Imagine that.

Why did he transfer out of Nebraska? In hindsight, something must be horribly wrong for a star WR to transfer.

Thanks for additional perspective on TCU.

Again, that just strikes me as being opposite of whatever the plan was supposed to be ...

I do believe they didn't stop him because anytime a team has done that lately kids go public and the outcry changes it. Especially a kid like Spielman during a pandemic. Pretty easy to say he wants to go home. Frost and Nebraska would have looked horrible and the outcry wins.

Tons of examples of it. Big Ten wants to allow transfers to play without sitting out, they aren't going to block inter-conference transfers.

What you say makes sense, on the surface.

So how do you explain the debacle of this season, for him?? You can't tell me that they (Rick and JD) had TCU in mind, can you? A middling program in the Big XII? And then to barely even get to play at all? Why not Iowa State? Much closer to home, Rick might have a chance to see him play, and a great team with a great coach. Why not Oklahoma State? Etc.

And then if there is smoke to the rumor that he's interested in transferring here as a grad transfer ... again, why not just transfer straight from Neb to Minn, then??

As mentioned before he was hurt most of the year. There is a pretty good chance that he was overvaluing himself, or wasn't firmly committed to transferring and coaches didn't hold spots.

I know he had a solid Nebraska career but he was their best option on a bad team. He got tons of targets and never broke 1000 yards. I wanted him as a return man only.

You could also turn it around to say he never broke 1000 because he played with bad QB's with bad protection and just bad overall team/culture. Hence why he wanted out.

I can buy your top part, as for why he had to land at TCU.

BUT AGAIN .... if he ends up coming here this year (huge if, so I'm just saying hypothetically) ... why not just come here straight away??

One wild guess, I suppose, is that Rick said no because we had Bateman? Who would obviously be the #1 and overshadow him? It's all spitballin' at this point.

I think Rick probably realized he'd be our #2 or 3, depending on CAB.

If he comes for a grad transfer year, big if, then I'll agree he was blocked. But I think if his dad brings that to his contacts, the outcry would have changed it. I'm positive.

Fair enough. Let's see what/if anything happens.
