Rodney Williams – Grinning from ear to ear about the season, and being a new Dad

GH: Where do you see fitting into the lineup then? Will it be your or Blake, or will Tubby have you both on the court?
RW: I think we can both be on the floor at the same time. I play really well with Blake, he finds me. Blake is the one that throws the lobs. I feel like if I’m getting to the rim, that will open up shots for Blake, and if he shoots, it opens up the lane for me and everybody else.

GH: Who do you think is the most improved this year?
RW: I don’t know. I think Colton Iverson. I think Colton has improved a whole lot, he’s been working on his mid-range jump shot, and he just looks really good from open gym and what we’ve seen this summer.

Good stuff Nadine.

Good to hear.

Awesome GL, thanks!

Are you going to try and get more interviews with more players before the season starts?

Wrap that sh!t up from now on...Rodney Williams = The Next Shawn Kemp?

Thanks!

I actually was able to interview almost every player today - it's just a matter of finding the time to transcribe the interviews and post them over the next week or two.

busy young man

i did not know rodney got married. he must be a very busy young man supporting a wife and child, hitting the books and playing basket ball.
hats off to him.

He didn't get married. The article says that it's his girlfriend.

You guys are right, Rodney should be sad and pissed that he just had a kid. I'm sure that he is very upset he disappointed the three of you. I for one am happy for Rodney and wish him luck with his busy schedule.

Thank you. I'm glad someone could get off their high judging horse and just wish him the best. He's a really sweet kid, and I'm sure he will have to grow up fast. I absolutely wish him the best, and happy that he seems excited to be a Dad...because it would be a very bad thing if he wasn't and deserted his family, as many men (and women) do.

Agreed and I'm sure a majority of other people feel the same way. There are always going to be a few people who like to judge situations and people that they don't know.

Hope he plays well this year because with his new obligations he's gone in April. Good luck young man and congrat's.

Don't be lumping me in with the other comments; I just noted his error in thinking he got married last spring...didn't mean for it to come off positive or negative.

RW seems excited about the new addition to his family...best of luck to him, his girlfriend, and their little one!

Four I guess. It just doesn't seem like a good plan for two kids to have a child when neither one is in a position to even support themselves. But, that's just me I guess.

You've either never been to college, never had a kid, or never played collegiate sports at the DI level. Imagine doing all three at once! I've never had a kid, but I was a DI athlete in college and the time commitment was absolutely insane. Throwing a kid in to this mix is a complete recipe for disaster. I wish Rodney nothing but the best in his situation, but the fact that anyone is happy for a 19 year old that has a kid is ridiculous. This is a sad sad situation.

A high % of Div I players have child(ren) while they are in college playing sport(s). It's not uncommon at all so players get through it somehow.

It sounds like his parents are playing a big role, and that's absolutely critical.

Great interview, GL. You have a talent for asking good questions, drawing out the players and giving us a feel for who they are and their personality. Well done!

I hope Rodney and his girlfriend can succeed, but there's no way this young man is ready to be an effective parent.
You can give it all the positive spin you want, but the odds of this working out favorably are not good.

I'm expecting your stats on # of children sired by Kentucky players each year back to 1995.

I have to admit that I agree with the skeptics here. But, maybe this will give him added incentive and improve his game. Who knows? Best of luck Rodney!

I knew you wouldn't disappoint. Um, do you think having that much knowledge is healthy?

I have a memory for UK trivia like that.

Minniefield did OK until drugs got the better of him in the NBA. He's doing OK now - so are his kids.

That was my first thought. The new baby all but seals the deal for an early exit. I just hope it's justified from a basketball point of view. That Williams game improves this year and there's no question he's a first round pick. It would help him, and it would help the Gophers.

Congratulations to Rodney on the new daughter. I actually think the unrealistic NBA draft projections for Rodney will be more of a distraction for him than his new daughter. Rodney hasn't even earned a starting spot on his college team and he is a #1 draft projection next year? This pressure will not help Rodney. Rodney has incredible athletic ability, but his basketball skills and strength will have to improve significantly for him to realize his NBA dreams.
