Here you go...this was a rough day for Gopher basketball. The 5th worse home loss in Gophers history.
Chris Collins:
• Really pleased with our effort today. This was a huge game for us because we've been a team in past years, where it's been an extended losing streak. We've lost 10 in a row, we had a tough week last week, and this was a big game for us to test where we are as team. It was a team win, not the B-MC and Tre show. Our efficiency was really good. A lot of guys stepped up and made shots. Anytime you can win on the road in the Big 10, you need to savor it.
• I just thought it was one of those games, it's not indicative. Richard is a really good friend of mine, he has a lot of young guys, I know the feeling. You're trying to get them to realize what it takes to play in this league. I love where his program is headed, it was just one of those days where we played good today, and they weren't on their game.
• I thought we functioned well offensively, we didn’t panic. We made shots. Do you make shots when you're open or do you miss? Today we made them.
• When King has it rolling, that's when MN plays really well - he only got 3 shots, that was a big focus.
• On McIntosh having 11 assists: I've got a special point guard, he's an elite player.
• It's hard, it's not easy when you're a competitor. Both of us came in at the same time, we're both in year 3. We both grew up with basketball, we talk a lot in the summers when we see each other and see time. You've got to find the small victories, even if you aren't getting wins, to get the morale up. Different practice methods. There's no exact science. I see this is a program on the right track, Mason is a sophomore, Jordan Murphy is a freshmen. . I've played against Reggie Lynch, he's a great player, Amir Coffey, his sister plays for us, he's a stud.
Richard Pitino:
• Gotta give them credit, they were really good and we were really bad, obviously.
• I think our guys, what they have to figure out, is when times get tough on the court, gotta guard and rebound.
• They totally outplayed us, and that's all on me.
• Until I think that our identity has become defense and rebounds, we've got no shot, because we aren't a great offensive team.
• They make some adjustments, we didn't guard the 3 very well in transition. McIntosh is going to be a great player, I'm a big fan of his as well.
• On Murphy - The foul trouble took away from his aggressiveness today. He didn't have a great game today. The things is, our guys have to stay confident when things aren't going well, they really lost their confidence.
• King - didn't have great body language today. What I'm disappointed with, is rebounding, there were times he didn't see the ball. I wish he would stop worrying about his shot. He's got to lock in on team defense. He lost confidence today more than anything today. He wants to help the team win by shooting.
• I thought we were playing hard, then the 1st few minutes of the 2nd half, that zapped our energy. You have to keep playing hard, regardless of what happens.
• We're not good at a whole lot right now, defensively. I don't think it's zone or man that's the issue, it's just execution on both sides.
• On Konate getting so much playing time- it just happened the way it did, it had to do with Murph in foul trouble as well. I thought he did some good things. He is really emotional on the court, in a bad way, he's getting really frustrated with the refs and himself, he needs to calm down a little bit.
• I think we're going through it like he did last year, they lost 10 in a row last year and look where they're sitting now. They're better from it. Looking at it right now, it's not a lot of fun, but they've gotta learn. You have to stay positive in today's world, or you're gonna get beaten down. I'm not saying people shouldn't beat us down. But you've got to stick with that you're doing and believing in it, and staying confident - but understanding what's wrong.
• More frustrated this game? No more than any other game.
• On Buggs - it's a practice thing. I don't want to make him look bad. He's working, he's just got to get better. I played the guys that I thought would help us win the game. He's a good kid, just gotta keep working.
• On lack of senior leadership - I think you look to anybody, I don't think those guys played great today, but you can't shelf them. You have to keep on looking at everybody. It's not Joey or Carlos's fault, it's everyone's fault…starting with me. We have to look at every guy available in the program. It's a collection of everybody. We understand that we're young, but we've got to do something about it, it doesn't excuse you from playing hard all the time.
