There you go. Sid said academic, Reusse didn't back down and stuck with attitude. Max said combination of both.

I would believe Max over the other 2 on any topic. IMHO Max doesn't seem to have an agenda.

Well, Devoe certainly played the part of being contrite at the game Friday. He also was there today and watched quite a bit of the women's game. On the radio last week talking about Devoe, Reusse said something like we can't say but they do make them pee in a cup over there. Then he giggled. Will take Sid and his delusions over Reusse and his act any day.

I guess we're getting little clues as to why Cory didn't come to the U. If Devoe is having issues, whether mild or not, it certainly would've impacted Cory's decision not to come here.

Why?

Cory's decision happened 7 months ago. Devoe's issues seem to have started after that.

I don't get the connection - at least not from what little we know about Devoe's suspension. Unless you know something the rest of us don't, I don't see how one necessarily affects the other - and I definitely don't see how it "certainly" would have had an impact.

I know we'd all like to follow this as Sid is very pro-Gopher, but Reusse actually bases his comments off facts. Sid just goes with what he thinks or thinks he heard. Just watch the Sports Show - Reusse will nail him on on every point, even when the U is saying something (like the budget issues), and Sid has no ground to stand on, but he keeps going!

Sid was at least right about one part of the football budget; the head coach's salary. Brew was cheap and you generally get what you pay for.

On their "Sports Show", last night, Sid insisted that Tubby told him the problem was academic.

I don't think the current situation is the reason. CJ's HS coach (Peck) nudged him to Texas over all others. Peck has sent other players to Texas. Maybe he and Rick Barnes are golfing buddies?

Reason for Devoe's suspension = same as Devron's suspension last year. Yeah Devoe and Tubby are having problems with eahothers attitude's but that's not something that warrants a 5+ game suspension in big time college basketball. Academics are also never worthy of a suspension that severe. Remember Al played right up until the start of second semester last year even though their were rumors all winter break that his first semester classroom performance would make him ineligible. Slumping academics and personality clashes are things D-I coaches can overlook. Devoe's transgressions are more severe than that.

Devoe and Rico Tucker would have been good friends.

Devoe

If not starting is part of the problem, I feel for Devoe, as Rodney hasnt done anything to deserve a start over Devoe. He hasn't played bad, but I'd rather have Devoe and his outside shot on the court. Obviously we would have Hoff move to small forward.

I am with ChemE here. Attitude does not merit five games. Attitude gets you kicked out of practice and maybe one game on the bench with the uniform on. There is something more serious going on here.

I was pleased with the attitude Devoe showed on the bench on Friday night. He was into the game.

I agree. Could you imagine how long Westbrook would have been suspended last year if that was the case?

It is good comedy.

I agree with you. Especially considering how Devoe helped this team last year when Nolen was out, IMO he emerged as the best all-round guard on team. If its acedemic, then maybe Tubby learned from the Nolen issue last year and doesn't want to take any chances having Devoe out at the end of the season when it counts. I sure would like to see him on the court when we play NC, but it doesn't look good.

If starting was the root of his 'attitude' issue, I could see why he would be upset or at least annoyed that Rodney is starting while he's coming off the bench.

This is pure speculation on my part but my guess is that Devoe's off the court issues impacted Tubby's decision to start Nolen/Rodney/whoever over him. Devoe's bad decision-making led to Devoe not starting and his inability to correct those issues forced Tubby to go the extra step and suspend him. If Devoe has had a bad attitude to go along with all this then that's even more cause for concern, but not the cause of the his being assigned a back-up role or being suspended.

It is good comedy.

You are sort of right. In TV Guide the program description could read, "Watch as both a misanthrope and a mean drunk ridicule a senile guy while his sycophant makes half-hearted attempts to protect him."

Maybe the attitude problem Tubby mentioned to Sid is Devoes attitude toward academics.

I'm not saying this has anything to do with the suspension but about two-three weeks ago around 3 a.m. while I was in Dinkytown I saw Devoe walking, well stumbling around Dinkytown by himself, clearly intoxicated.

Obviously some college athletes partake in drinking, no doubt about that, but Devoe needs to get some things straight.

Cory and Devoe

When the Gophers played in Greensboro, N.C., in the first round of the NCAA tournament two years ago, I sat next to Cory and Devoe's mom in the second half. I asked her where she thought Cory would go and if Devoe being at Minnesota would give the Gophers a leg up. She said she had no idea where Cory would go--that he stepped to his own drummer--and that Devoe being at Minnesota would have no effect on his decision one way or the other.

So, no, Devoe's issues (if he even had any last spring) had no effect on Cory's choice.

pretty much everybody is sort of right, Devoe has multiple issues involving behavior, attitude, and academics. It's not a new problem but everything sort of came together recently including a confrontation with Tubby that resulted in this suspension. Regarding cory, devoe was far from an asset in his recruitment, actually the opposite.

I consider this the definitive word. Thanks for the update, JG!

I am assuming, maybe i'm reading this incorrectly though, that Devoe may have been a negative in the sense Cory wanted to go out on his own and do his own thing and not be in his brothers "shadow" I also will never believe Cory considered Minnesota "because his brother went there", IMO, Cory liked Minnesota for the same reasons Devoe did, not because Devoe did. Great campus, great city, great coach, great tradition, etc.

I don't think Mo Walker liked Minnesota solely because Devoe/Cory were interested in it either, but because, it is in fact, a great school to play basketball at.

The linguistic historian in me is curious to learn when the practice of referring to athletes by their given names began. Being a fogey, I'm accustomed to using surnames.

Right about the time Mickey came along, maybe?
