Reusse: Possible bowl bid for 5-7 Gophers? That's humiliating

I think Reusse was making a good point. Unfortunately, it was a poorly written, meandering column.

I look at it a little differently. The Pinstripe Bowl (or a game like it) is analogous to an NFL preseason game. Why risk injuries in a meaningless game that no one cares about?

There is only one bowl game that really matters and its not really a "bowl" game and that's the national championship game. ALL other bowl games are investments made by city's, chamber of commerce's, businesses, airlines, hotels, etc. to promote their city and stimulate travel and support economies.

Patrick the genius writer apparently does not understand this portion of the equation.

Times have changed and gone is the day of 6 bowl games that meant something. Maybe Patrick should grow with these changes too... Am I happy with this seasons results? No, but that doesn't stop me from supporting my favorite team and by the results of the TV ratings there are millions of other viewers who want to watch the Golden Gophers too!

It's like some people are making it about themselves. "I don't think they deserve it so I don't think they should play because I would be embarrassed." If the coaching staff feels it would make them a better team and program to get the extra practices, extra game and chance to go on a trip together then they should do it. It's that simple to me.

As usual, perfect logic from G.I.I.

If they still got the 15 practices regardless of going to a bowl game or not then this would be a good comparison. But it is all or nothing with the bowl games.

The coaches must feel the benefits outweigh the negatives.

If why were talking about Iowa or Wisconsin getting in with a 5-7 record how long would this thread be?

Sports fans are often hypocrites. The same fans that rip on Iowa for their schedule will be the most vocal about defending Minnesota's if they were ever in the same situation.

When the casino offers you free play you take it. People let their emotions drive what needs to be a logical decision. If you're given a head start in the race, you take it. No one at this point next year is going to complain if the team improves because they got an early start when offered a bowl game at 5-7.

Last time I checked very few jobs (especially a HFC) are afforded the luxury of being paid solely for providing opinions with no consequence...Reusse is just a lucky to be one who gets that luxury.

It's crazy to me that a football game at a neutral site between two similarly record teams can illicit such strong anger from people......

It's one more football game. Why are so many people against more football?

Reusse comes off like someone who doesn't want to pay attention anymore, and the gophers going to a bowl game means that he has to continue to talk and write about them a few more times this year. Well, it's his job, so he should just suck it up and do it or find a different job.

The NCAA was backed into this corner a few years ago because it basically has no legal basis for limiting the number of bowls. There are at least five new bowls contemplating applications for next year. If you thought 40 bowls was too many, try 45. Before it gets that far, the forecast here is that bowls go out of business. Whether it's Wall Street, coaches' salaries or bowls, the market always prevails. - Dennis Dodd

Exactly. The only difference between this potential game and the other non-conference games is timing. There are only three real "post-season" games this year with four teams participating. Every other is just an exhibition designed for TV ratings.

Why risk injuries in a meaningless game that no one cares about?

Injuries for what? The next season that starts 9 months from now? Everyone risks injury getting out of bed every morning. If football players are that averse to injury, they shouldn't be playing football.

And what do you mean no one cares? I guarantee that at least some of the players care. The bowl sponsors and ESPN care. I care.

What's more humiliating to me is this silly notion that if we show our pride and turn down a bowl offer it will somehow make us a better team. Or, by accepting the bowl invitation we'll be rewarding mediocrity and this will only lead to more mediocre seasons because the players will know they don't have to try hard and they'll still go to a bowl. Ridiculous.

Unless it's a conference specific requirement I don't think so. Mizzou just turned down their opportunity to go bowling

Yes, I think it is a conference specific requirement. Not 100% sure, but saw it mentioned online a few times.

I don't know the answer to this, but does the SEC pool all bowl money and distribute equally between all partners?

The Big Ten takes all the money, gives bowl teams their cut for expenses beforehand, pays for unsold bowl tickets, covers some other costs and then distributes the "profit" among all 14 schools. I can't imagine a trip to Detroit or NYC adding a lot to that pool, but it could be a reason why a school wouldnt turn down a bid.

Offending Patrick's pride is one of the last things the U.of M. should consider when making any decision.

More shots at the U. Nothing to see here.

Made the mistake of looking at the comments section. Mental illness is alive, thriving and on full display there.

Anger should be with the fact that there are 40 bowls, not with the Gophers. What coach wouldn't want 15 extra practices vs. shutting it down for the year? Missouri is a different case with Pinkel's health problems. I don't get all the huffing and puffing over this issue, nor have I heard anybody say the words earned or reward in connection to this extra game.

Question for Patrick: Are you a season ticket holder? If not - STFU.

Well said.

If you're the team, you take the extra practices and run. Period.

In a sense they earned the right with their APR being high enough to get the bid.

Why would any school give up free promotion on ESPN? It will get fixed if ESPN doesn't think a 5-7 team paid the bill for having the game. Chances are nothing with change.

If he was a season ticket holder, he would have restrictions placed on him that would be contrary to his employment, such as contacting recruits, and any contact with a student athlete that could be considered and extra benefit. Plus, he gets in for free in pretty good seats.

No way to prove this, but.........I am willing to bet that some of the Gopher "fans" who are upset, embarrassed, or otherwise humiliated by the idea of a 5-7 team going to a bowl game, WILL be watching that game.

So, I challenge you. If you are opposed to the idea of the Gophers playing in a bowl game, express your opposition by not watching, not listening, not checking the box score, and otherwise ignoring all information about the game.

Then, you can spend 100% of your time reveling in your moral superiority.

OK. Even Patrick tweeted last night that he knows the Gophers can't turn an invite down. In that context, WTH is the point here? We finished 5-7. We have good grades. We got an invite. We have to accept whether or not we want to. What are we to be humiliated by?

FTR - Pat says it is "how it will be framed as a reward" that he will find humiliating. You know, something that hasn't even happened yet.

He posts this crap, ignores that very important point, and ignorant folks who don't know any better start nodding their heads. This whole thing is so stupid.

While we're on the topic, I hope US Bank Stadium gets a bowl game...i could care less who plays, its just fun to watch CFB.
