I am sorry, but these go without saying. One person does not make a team. Any large organization, whether fundraising or donor/alumni relations usually is a whole cadre of support staff.

Jerry Kill met with members of the Boards of Regents and made appearances tirelessly on behalf of the fundraising efforts. He was the public face. That's partly why his health turned for the worse because he was doing double duty covering for Norwood Teague's ineptitude at fundraising.

No BS. I know Craig's Thompson mother. I spoke to her soon after Norwood went down and she thought it is very doubtful her son would leave his current job for the Minnesota AD position. Sounds as if it had to do with his wife and families wants and needs. People who I know that have met Craig, say he a wonderful person and would be a great hire.

They generate leads, they cultivate interest...but if we are talking millions of dollars I'm confident Jerry Kill or Lou Nanne was probably the closer in a lot of cases. Neither of those guys is pitching people for a few thousand dollars and most large donors want to be courted by the faces of the project. I'm sure there are exceptions but hundreds of people aren't closing million dollar donations....without the "closers." jmo Guessing you can throw Harvey MacKay and Dave Mona amongst the closers too. Beth and Dan too. The workers lay the groundwork is how I think it happens...

I'd also be willing to bet those hundreds of people have a do not call list...the Fortune 500 companies, the Rod Wallace's, T Denny Sanford's etc that they are not permitted to call. The closers handle these people. Last thing you want is people annoyed by different people calling. If you are thinking of donating millions of dollars...somewhere someone you know, like and trust is going to be required to get your serious attention. As a CEO type person, you are not dealing with an anonymous hired employee from the U of M. If that is how it is done it might explain the pace.

I don't mean "support staff". I mean professional staff who get paid six figures to raise money and do nothing else. Fundraising was a portion of Norwood Teague's job and an even smaller portion of Jerry Kill's job.

Okay, even I have to admit that Tony Dungy is probably only 50/50 for either AD or football coach, but

!. Mike Grant is getting sort of old to be football coach I the Big Ten, so he can be AD. Eden Prairie is a really big school in a town full of push people with too much money and ego, so he can clearly handle the pressure of this role at the Big Ten level.

2. Mark Trestman proved he is one of the greatest coaches ever last year in the NFL, so he is clearly ready of the challenge of "taking the next" step (just like Brewster was going to do). Not too many people could handle the challenge that the the U of M poses, but Trestman is our guy for sure!

3. Money! Well, I have the real answer! All problems solved! Mike Grant probably will be getting a real big pension payment due to his membership in the Education Minnesota Teachers Union, so he probably would work cheap, real cheap.

Also even though Marc Trestman took Chicago by storm last year, he was fired unjustly and ended up with some ungodly contract settlement, so there is not doubt that he probably would work for a salary less than the towel boy at the Joel Maturi Memorial Boathouse works for!

We just killed several birds with one stone! Oh wait, that was really a non-PC comment since Kiki Sonnen and Phyllis Kahn recently made us aware of the bird killing factory that is rising, even as we write, on the site of the former Metrodome. , I wonder what the pay scale is for journeyman Bird Scooper at the USB/ Viking Stadium. I am sure the carcasses are already piling up! sorry for digressing!

Are you suggesting the U literally has "hundreds" of people who get paid six-figures to raise funds?

I never said that. There are plenty of professional staff who get paid six figures to raise funds. In total, there are hundreds of people who raise funds.

And, I assume you are talking University-wide and including a lot of part-time student workers in this "hundreds of people" figure?

Professional fundraisers who work for the University of Minnesota and are University of Minnesota employees. I don't know how I can be more specific. I'm not giving you a directory of names, if that's what you're asking. I can tell you that the directory doesn't include Harvey Mackay or Dave Mona, and never included Jerry Kill.
