realistic 2014 recruiting class?

If its a true freshman like Elijah Thomas, Alex Illikanen, or Henry Ellenson I am fine with starting them in 2015.

Aren't both Illikanen and Ellenson PFs? I think they're both around the 6-8 or 6-9 mark. They'd be great additions, but I don't think we can function in the Big Ten with our tallest players at 6-9.

What is your definition of "function," we started a front court of 6'6 and 6'8 players last year...

We most definitely could start a front court of a bulked up Buggs and either Ilk or Henry. You don't need a "true" center in college (or hell, even pro) basketball any more.

That's a very fair point. Though I wouldn't necessarily put Ellenson and Mbakwe in the same category (and Alex is assuredly not made in Mbakwe's mold). I guess I should have said it will likely be hard to be competitive with those guys playing the 5.

Henry is 6'11" in shoes, so in basketball terms, he's 6'11". That's more than big enough to play the 5 in college, although I believe he prefers to play the 4.

Looking more and more like.....

Riley LaChance
somebody we haven't heard about yet, offer pending
somebody we haven't heard about yet, offer pending
somebody we haven't heard about yet, offer pending

Miles Webb, Oneil Mihms, Alou Kane, Kevin Loge and Kerry Woolridge. Oops! A flashback.

isn't tum tum visiting mich st... if so hes a goner

I don't understand this sentiment, same with Duke offering Reid Travis. It certainly doesn't help, but I really don't think it's game, set, match. I doubt Michigan State fans are considering him a lock at this point.

I just really hope Pitino drives home the fact to Tum Tum about not being a Plan B at Michigan St. Just because they miss out on someone else they come after him. Tum Tum seems to have been a priority for Pitino for a while now.

But couldn't Nairn also be considered a backup plan for Newton and Tyus Jones?

I am sick of that sentiment, we've got a "frown face" in the title of the Reid Travis thread because Duke offered him. If Minnesota wants to compete, it will have to beat out some top schools for kids. We have a number of fans whose reaction to another school offering a kid is to roll over and play dead. Nairn may wind up at MSU and Reid might end up at Duke, but it's not like you get extra points on a message board for declaring it "over" before it happens.

I am sick of the inferiority complex that infests a (large?) portion of our fan base. SMU landed the number 2 player in the Rivals 150, UNLV the 15th player on the same list, Miami the 35th player, USC 43rd, Seton Hall 44th, Virginia 48th, Utah 53rd, Providence 60 and 68, Oklahoma State 63rd, Wake Forest 64 and 67, and BYU 70. That's just in the top 75. Think most of those kids chose those programs over a currently "better" program? Of course they did, but for some reason we have fans who just love to count their own team out of races.

I certainly worry that Pitino and staff will fail to land any top kids, but that worry is based on an admitted lack of knowledge of where they stand with some of those kids. Judging by things like the ridiculous crystal ball predictions, I would say that I am not alone in not knowing where some of these kids are leaning.

The concern for me about Reid Travis and Duke was he had interest before they offered him. The recruiting sites all had Travis with offers from MN, Stanford, Gonzaga,Notre Dame, etc. Duke was the one school with no check. Now with the offer it's tough not to be a little worried.

Well, you know, since we missed on Newton at least. I don't think we can play the "you are Izzo's Plan B" when Pitino didn't start recruiting Tum Tum terribly hard until after Newton went to Miami.

Very well said, winners will lose now and then but they are never defeated....

tum tum would start from the beginning at msu... for a coach who constantly is in the elite 8 and final 4.... vs pitino who has....... a name..... just sayin is all.. pitino has a lot of work ahead of him inorder to start landing better than avg recruits

Also a higher probability that he gets recruited over at MSU.

They will certainly aim high next year and Tum Tum should realize that...

What about Jarvis Johnson? Minnesota will be doing the same thing.

So it's Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State and the Gophers the only teams left without a commit?

I'm wondering if it's a little strange when LaChance and Tum Tum run into each other today?

I think Jarvis and Tum Tum are probably at about the same level. Tum Tum would probably get more playing time since he's a year ahead of him. MSU has already offered a PG from Michigan rated #30 on Rivals and #19 on ESPN. I think he is more likely to lose his starting spot if he goes to MSU.

IMO Jarvis doesn't look like the type of player who will do much sitting.

He will not. I see Jarvis as a 23-27 minutes a night guy as a freshman. By the way, I guess he won a sunk contest tonight and was spectacular (says Ryan James).

I agree. If Coach P. comes up empty at PG, I'm comfortable with Jarvis, and McNeil backing him up. At PF and C, he kind of has a gun to his head this class.
