realistic 2014 recruiting class?

What makes people so confident about Tum Tum? Last I checked he had an Indiana offer in his top 3. I don't like going head to head against IU for recruits.

We'll see what happens, but Tum Tum isn't their top target. If Snider commits there it's likely between us an Oklahoma (still not a guarantee considering his friend plays there).

Are we pretty much out of the running for Josh Perkins? I'm still holding out the slightest bit of hope for him.

Officialy- No
Unofficialy- Unfortunately, it looks that way.
But... We've all seen wackier things happen in recruiting. Just trying to not set myself up for dissapointment when it seems in a little less than a week he calls another schools name.

People, don't forget Josh Martin, the top 100 PF from Seattle who said he would official here and has a smaller list of schools he's considering. (Like 3-5) I also like to think we have a good shot at Vaughn. Something doesn't feel right with Travis though. It just seems like he needs to move on to bigger things and become more independant instead of staying close to home, and there is no problem about that.

Additionally, along with Vaughn, I feel great about chances of landing Macura, and things are in a great place with TumTum and Paul White. I also wouldn't completely forget about Snider yet. He could have a lot of interest in the Gophers for all we know. I'll admit I've kind of prematurely written off Whitehead, because the interest he's shown to us has been minimal, and we've appeared to be an afterthought. I still think he ends up at Cuse, or Arizona. Very exciting recruiting stuff all around!

Don't think Zona is very likely for Whitehead as his mom seems to have deemed it too far away. It's probably between Cuse and Indiana for his services. That being said, he is apparently going to visit those 4 schools plus UCLA so who knows. Once we get him on campus anything can happen.

Macura apparently has scheduled an unofficial visit to Purdue. Not sure why he and his family would pay their own way to visit West Lafayette if he was so close to committing to the Gophers. Sounds like a waste of money if you ask me.

Well his mom is a flight attendant so he said he'd be taking a lot of unofficials because he can presumably fly for free/very cheap, so I don't think he is "wasting money." If he was serious about Purdue I think he'd probably use one of his officials on them...

Agreed. I'm not sure why Painter is all that interested in Macura anyways. Given the current roster and incoming players - not sure where Macura would fit. I guess you ca nnver recruit too many guards.

Do you think it is realistic to have a 2014 class of

Vaughn
Reid
White
Macura
Tum Tum

Incredible to think we would even be in the running for a class like this considering our last coaching staff seemed to really be lazy in recruiting

"Realistic"? I'd say it's possible, but not very likely. Possible, because IMO we might take 5 in this class (4 in the fall, and Vaughn in the spring) bc somebody almost always transfers these days, and because although you list two PF's, Travis and White are very different type players, and because individually the Gophers seem to have a pretty fair to good shot at each guy on your list.

Of course, even if the odds were 66% on each of them (which they aren't) that would make getting all 5 unlikely (mathematically about 12%). I think your list is more of a best-case scenario than the most realistic one. That being said, getting one highly rated guy to commit could start a domino effect. I'm most worried about getting the first one.

I'd also note, in fairness to Tubby, that (lazy or not) his first two classes compared pretty favorably to this dream class you just listed. Trick is to get them here, keep them here, develop them, get them to play together (and get some luck in avoiding injuries).

Sampson 4*
Joseph 4*
Bostick - JC player of the year
Iverson 3*
Carter (?) tx

Royce 5*
Rodney 4*
Mbakwe 4* tx
Cobbs 3*/4*

Where was Cobbs a 4-star? He wasn't even Rivals 150 to my knowledge and was a 2-star on Scout. Maybe you meant 2/3-star.

Tea leaves as of today look realistic to think:

Whitehead
Macura
Tum Tum
TBD 4th that could be Vaughn*

*fan base goes absolutely bonkers

I don't remember but I am 100% certain I read it at the time he was being recruited. There are 5 or 6 rating services and they're all constantly in flux and seem to change every other month. Looking back at prior years you now only see the "final" rating, not at the time they committed, or the time they were being recruited, or the time they signed. Cobbs is a guy who's rating was all over the place though (sort of like TumTum right now, who's 4* on rivals and not even listed on some of the other ones), and as a 3 year starter at Cal he obviously turned out to be a good recruit. Also remember Iverson was a Rivals 150 player. And, though I'm not certain, I think Rodney Williams was rated a 5* as a sophomore. He dropped like a rock in the ratings during the latter part of his HS career after we had already gotten his commitment.

Anyway, my point was that getting highly rated recruits is only the first step. I like what I'm hearing from the new staff about player development, playing together, communicating, etc.

Doesn't really matter anyway, but I don't recall Cobbs ever being a 4-star on the three main sites. As far as Rodney, he was rated as high as 26 (one spot away from a 5-star) and Jerry Meyer listed him as one of the guys who could really jump even further up the rankings with a good showing at the Global Games (I believe that was the event). Turned out Rodney was really quiet in the event and Meyer/Rivals dropped him all the way to the bottom of 4-star range.

Mo walker was a four star on espn and Austin Hollins was a top 150 player and Joe Coleman was ranked as high as 59 and Andre was ranked as high as 52 the first 4 classes were very good

Plug in Travis into the TBD and you have one well rounded class. A starter, 2 players who would get lots of minutes and one to redshirt. Couldn't do much better.

I guess if we count sites like Maxpreps we're going to have some bizarre ranges in where guys were ranked.

Still holding hope for this class.

1. PG Tum Tum
2. SG Whitehead or Vaughn
3. PF Travis
4. Another big man or second of Whitehead/Vaughn

I've always been an optimist...

Would be nice. I am just hoping for 1 of your first 3, and 1 of your last 2.

I could also see the possibility that they go with a 3 man class. They have to get a power forward and a shooting guard. They should get a point guard, but it's not absolutely necessary- as long as they sign a VERY good one in the next class-one that can start as a frosh.

I have a ton of confidence that the energy of this staff and the style of play coupled with the Pitino name will pay off in big recruiting returns. If not this year - then next year. I'd rather see them get the absolute needs filled this year with the best players they can and bank the rest for next year, then have them just fill the roster with leftovers (names we don't know yet).

If we can get Tum Tum, Vaughn or Whitehead and Reid- that's a dream class. If we have to replace Reid with a lesser known banger at PF but get the first pair- still a great class.

Am I the only one wondering what we're doing about centers? Both EE and Mo will be RS Juniors this year, and unless we pick up a center in this class or go the JC route we will be starting a true Freshman in 2015

My prediction, maybe a bit optimistic? Josh Martin and Tum Tum. I'd be pretty happy with that too!

Elijah Thomas, baby!!!

This is still his most recent tweet by the way and I am pretty sure he's taken other unofficials since.

If its a true freshman like Elijah Thomas, Alex Illikanen, or Henry Ellenson I am fine with starting them in 2015.
