Post Game Thread: Gophers lose heartbreaker to PSU

Fleck still has not recruited the talent to compete against real Big 10 teams. Our guys gave it their all, but as long as Fleck is at the helm, this is our ceiling.
Who are the real B10 teams? I understand TOP teams, but outside of the top 4-5 MN is fairly close.

Corrupt another blown call, typical never get calls when playing teams like this
Not sure if its corrupt. Might be psychological: When they make a 50-50 call I think that fact that they are #4 in the country creeps into the sub-conscious of the refs minds.

I’m sad about the huge missed opportunity, but how can you not be super proud of the effort? Anyone who says MN was outcoached is emotionally immature or a troll. Of course I’m disappointed about the fake punt, but the fact you had the #4 team in the country feeling like they had to do that or else lose the game? Hats off on the effort.
Yeah, the attitudes of some are so frustrating after a loss. That was a hell of a battle against one of the best teams in the country and we came up just short. As others have mentioned to spring an upset you have to play clean and we didn't.

It sucks that we lost. Not claiming any sort of moral victory or any crap like that. Guys battled hard against a really good team and unfortunately they made a few more plays than we did and got the W.

Just have to ignore the douche bags who will of course be out in full force after a loss. Team gave it their all and came up a little short, no shame in losing to a top 5 team especially when you push them to the absolute limit.

Just returned from game. Gophs had a damn good chance, being on the seven yard line with minutes to play. Why run when you were getting negative yardage on at least ten running plays before that moment. Then why do a trick screen pass to a LT even though the play was wide open; makes me wonder if the QB thought he would continue to drift a few more yards. Why PJ went for the field goal keeping us still one point behind after Brosmer missed on the throw over the middle, is difficult to understand. A TD puts you in front by more than a field goal. He bet on getting the ball back. He would have with about four minutes to go but the fake punt was a killer. I'd like to know what was our defensive call on that one. And yes, OPSU's #44 is an absolute stud. Well played but too many mistakes or missed opportunities by the Gophs.

We played great! Fun to watch!
But if you want to win you can't have two turnovers on Brosmer.
You need to be aware that they could fake the punt....we seemed surprised.
There's courageous and then there is dumb playcalls...throwing to the left tackle seems dumb.
Lucky it wasn't complete...#11 Penn State would have caused a fumble.
This is a great post. Agree with everything. Fleck seemed to say in the post game that the defense on the fake punt call was his and he didn’t think they’d fake it. Our OC seems to be getting better, but still not ready for the big time.

This was another disappointing season imo. They win today and I feel differently, but they lost. I would say they’ve all been disappointing since 2019. I’m really not sure Fleck wins 8 regular season games again at MN. I think 7 would be his best. A big win like today would go a long way into enjoying the season. Will be interesting to see what happens to the interest in this program. I hope next year is as good as this, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

That wasn't a 50 50 call. It was blatant cheating for one team.

It’s hard to tell with the portal but next year looks pretty tough Lots of holes to fill

Had a conflict didn’t watch will catch a replay but kicking FGs en masse isn’t a recipe to beat a more talented team. PJ needs to keep changing his best he’s been better this year but he’s a way below average game day coach. The last time we played Penn St. It was a shit show so like that we gave them what sounds like a helluva ball game.

Jimmies and Joes, questionable B1G officiating, turnovers, and strange goal line calls sums it up

They played their asses off. Too bad they couldn't pull it off.

Does anyone have video of the senior players coming out to their parents? I'd love to see it.

Billds were there in person too. Never felt like the Gophers would put it away. D kept us in the game but the O just couldn't quite get there in the second half.

PSU's No. 44 is the real deal. The closest thing we've had like that player since I've been a Gopher was Maxx.

Tough loss but Bucky lost to Nebbie decisively today too. The Huskers ain't Penn State. Play this well next week...even with some errors...and the W is very possible.

Heck of a game! We played well just didn’t win. Gotta get out to a fast start next week against Bucky.

Losses the past two weeks have unfortunately pushed the Gophs back down into another nasty toilet bowl. Take a look at the standings.

That fake punt was like a turnover. Absolute killer.
The punt team ran onto the fields during huddled with a different urgency than the other punts. Right as they broke the huddle, I turned to my friend in my ticket group and said "Penn State is about to try something." They did not disguise it well.

Keep in mind we let Allars scramble for eight yards on third down—any shorter run and the fake is likely not an option. On this topic I’m curious how the Vikings successfully defended the Lions’ fake punt versus the Gophers’ failure.

By my count we ran 10 times on first down and only got more than 2 yards on three of them. Between that, and running on 1st and 10, 2nd and 11, and 3rd and 9 in PSU territory before settling for a FG, I'm disappointed we picked today to try and be a running team again. We just aren't that good at it.

Agreed. Unfortunately we’re not a great passing team either.

6-5 seems about right at this point.

Considering that Minnesota has by far the lowest number of 3, 4, and 5 star recruits within 200 miles of any Big Ten team, I think Fleck has recruited pretty well. Maybe Minnesota fans will open up their pockets a bit more and NIL can help close the gap.

Nebraska and Iowa must be in that category.

We need a fan communications system for stuff like this!! "PJ call a timeout quick!"

Heck of an effort by the Gophers. Thought they outplayed PSU a good chunk of the game. But PSU’s players are on average 10-15% better than ours. Not impossible to overcome, but you gotta play clean, which they didn’t.

I didn’t mind the call to kick the FG at the end. Our defense had been playing well, I was confident they’d get the ball back. Plus, with how bad first through third downs went, I wasn’t confident they’d pull it out on 4th down.

There was a play in the third quarter where the Gophers had the ball around midfield and it was 2nd and 1. Normally, that’s a pretty good spot to take a deep shot. I look up, and PSU has a single safety playing 8 yards back. They had no fear of the Gophers throwing deep. Of course, the Gophers ran into an 8 man box and didn’t get the first on the play. The biggest hangup with Brosmer has to be the inability to throw an accurate deep ball. That really hampers them when it comes to how defenses play them.
