Post Game Thread: Gophers Dominate Nevada

Nice to see a qb ready to snap with 10 on the clock and in total control, or at least give that impression, has to build some confidence. Number 2 can really jump and with good timing.

P.J. Fleck would never run a 2-minute drill while leading 27-0.

Neither would I if I were the head coach.

I understand that I'm old, and it's now 2024, but there still exists a little thing called sportsmanship. At least I hope that's the case.
We can agree to disagree on whether this is considered sportsmanship anymore. I think those days are largely gone. PJ calls guys like Schiano his mentor and if you paid attention to Rutgers first two games he was clearly pouring it on during the 4th Qtr keeping his starters in the whole game. Because it today's college football it's largely about perception and unfortunately very few people look into the details even the tv analyst. A lot of people will just look at the B1G Scoreboard tonight and tomorrow and say I'm impressed with another Minn shoutout, but only 27 points against Nevada. Why do you think Notre Dame laid it on Purdue that badly, because they were determined to try to get the idea into everyone's mind that last week was an aberration. So, sorry Purdue we are going to put a beating on you and not let up with no consideration of sportmanship.

In the game vs. Nevada, played earlier today, P.J. clearly eschewed an opportunity to score at the end of the game.

Yes?

This comment may have been made half in jest, I'm not sure. But if I was coaching the Gopher defense, I'd absolutely be challenging the players to shoot for three straight shutouts. It's something to think about, that's for sure.
Not in jest. Iowa offense sucks, get er done

Did Fleck address his gaffe with the timeout at 2:03 when Nevada was going to punt? Absolutely no reason to burn a timeout there.

PJ is asinine with his timeouts. Hes never acknowledged it and he probably never will :(

It is something that is so simple but he refuses to work on it or give it to a capable GA

Not sure why PJ would burn a redshirt game of Lindsey’s to hand the ball off 3 times at the end of the game… I can only presume that they anticipate he will be forced in at some point during the season anyway.
Because red shirts don’t matter with a player of his talent. Drake does not need 5 years of college football.

Wisconsin Badgers playing in primetime take big loss to Bama. I wish the Gophers could play some challenging non-conference opponents, instead of the creampuffs. Creampuffs build a false sense of reality.

I mean we played UNC this year and last year, have either Cal or Mississippi State each year for the next four years and then also get Alabama in like 2032 and 2033 so I’m not really sure what else you want.

I mean since 2010 we've had an AQ/P5/P4 team on the schedule 11 times, and we had no noncon in 2020.
  • 2010 Vs. No. 18 USC
  • 2011 @ No. 25 USC
  • 2012 Vs. Syracuse
  • 2014 Vs. TCU
  • 2014 Vs. No. 2 TCU
  • 2016 Vs. Oregon State
  • 2017 @ Oregon State
  • 2021 @ Colorado
  • 2022 Vs. Colorado
  • 2023 @ No. 20 North Carolina
  • 2024 Vs. North Carolina
Obviously it hasn't been against Blue Bloods but the schedules haven't been clear of Power Conference opponents either.

I could care less about the RS. However, to put him in the game and basically do nothing is ridiculous. If you're going to put him in then why not actually have him run the 2-min drill? At least then you are giving him some solid in-game experience that he can use if god forbid Brosmer gets dinged. There's value in him getting in there and managing the clock and getting the guys lined up as Nevada still had some fight to keep us out. I don't want to hear any shit about not running up the score or anything like that. Those days are over. Look at Notre Dame and Bama wasn't letting up on Wisky.
Ditto. In a runaway, he should have played more.

The conference schedule is challenging enough, we don’t need to add additional challenges.

It was never contemplated that Lindsey would redshirt. He is in intensive preparation to take over next year. The odds of a guy like Lindsey being in the program five years are nil.

It's not sportsmanship entirely. Fleck shows respect to most other coaches, especially a guy in his first year in the job.

I think the whole OL could be re-tooled but it won’t happen this year. I think we have younger guys like Nelson who would perform better but PJ is all in on 77, et al and I think it’ll scuttle our season if we don’t either see the starters improve significantly or changes in personnel.
I share your concern. The line didn't appear to be getting that much push yesterday against a team I thought they would steam roll. Maybe Nevada is better upfront on defense than I expected them to be, but our line just didn't seem to fire out.

I didn't see the second game, but has Brosmer thrown over the middle at all. Seems that most of the pass plays are outside the hashmarks. I was thinking on one of the bubble screens to Jackson (it may not have been a bubble screen, but Jackson caught it behind the line-of-scrimmage and got two or three yards out of it), the opposition is going to jump that play sooner or later.

Getting back to back shut outs is impressive, regardless of the competition. Kerry Brown was our defensive MVP and DTII was our offensive MVP. it was very balanced attack offensively.
Brosmer is looking more comfortable and decisive. Let's keep Floyd...without the help of a fair catch 😁😁😁

Only three teams playing 3 games so far have allowed fewer points than us. They're all from the SEC: Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Only three teams playing 3 games have allowed fewer yards per game than us: Tennessee, Indiana, and Missouri.

Fleck should have put him in a lot earlier. Red shirt has less and less value. Most likely Fleck doesn't see him here for all his eligibility.

The seam pass to Greer in the 1st half was a thing of beauty.

At this point, I'm so conditioned to this I just shrug.

it was an odd game from this perspective:

1st half: Gopher passing 14 of 20 for 195 yds / Rushing 12 carries for 33 yds

2nd half: Gopher passing 2 of 6 for (-4) yds / Rushing 20 carries for 162 yds

I don't know when I've seen that kind of a split from one half to the next.

no idea if it was deliberate, but I could easily see Fleck telling the OC to "work on the running game" in the 2nd half.

North Carolina was not a Cream Puff...

I’m convinced we beat UNC fairly comfortably if we had played them in week 2 or 3. Brosmer just didn’t look comfortable in game 1, even when he had a clean pocket. I’m sure he was extra nervous.
He was also playing against WAY better players than the other two games.

I think it was just a combination of the running game starting to work in the second half and running out the clock.
