Post Game Thread: Gophers Are Mayo Bowl Champs!!!! Finish 8-5!!!

Great to get another win, and i really enjoyed the play calling on both sides of the ball. Thought it put us in a great position to win.

Sorry if this was covered in the in game thread, but I've got a question on the muffed punt fair catch where our guy was blocked into Perich. I'm taking the rules analyst at his word that there is no penalty for blocking a player into a punt returner who made a fair catch. But, even ignoring the gopher player being blocked into the returner, wasn't the VA Tech player who was pushing him close enough to Perich to constitute kick catch interference? I don't remember the exact rule, but I believe that a player on the coverage team has to give some amount of room, and it looked like the arm he had up high on the gopher player he was blocking was only an inch or to from Perich.

One thing not mentioned was that the VT guy pushed the helmet off the Gopher player, illegal hands to the face should have been called.

We beat USC and UCLA back to back

We finally beat Bret B

We beat wisconsin at camp.randall and kept them out of a bowl game to end their streak and then we extended our 8 game bowl winning streak.

I give the season a B+.

Loss to UNC sucked as we had that game.

Loss to Iowa was simply them being better than us in the run game.

We got robbed in Michigan.

The Penn State game was so well.played by both teams.

Rutgers was a disaster.

All in all, a very positive season.

The ending of wisconsin's streak almost makes the season an A- all by itself.

Probably in packets you can’t open without industrial strength scissors.
I go ugly caveman and rip ‘Em open with my teeth, then gargle with listerine for 5 minutes as my kind goes through all the machinations of the germs I ingested

Great finish to a fun season. What is it about Minnesota football teams and close games EVERY week. My nerves are shot. Don't know what I will do if the Vikes get in the SB. Anyhow some points from the Mayo bowl:
  • Kerry Brown was a beast. Two tackles out of nowhere to save TD's on those long plays. I am super impressed with this kid. He and Koi are deadly.
  • Anthony Smith is a difference maker. Period. He is going to be a factor next year that opposing offenses will have to account for. Keep working kid.
  • Jaren Mangham! Where have you been all year?!! Seems to be the perfect compliment to DT. I did not realize how big and physical he was. Don't understand him being behind Nubin in the depth chart but maybe his fresh legs were a factor in this game.
  • Fun to see Nuke Hayes get some touches. Almost got that first down when looked like he was going to be stopped well short. I think it was actually a bad spot by the refs that shorted him.
  • I have been loving on Jameson Geers in other posts and this game only bolsters that. He has the potential to play on Sunday's if he keeps progressing. My fear is that he may be a transfer portal guy. Fingers crossed he realizes what he has with this program and there is enough DTA money. He is the one I am most worried about of the "unsigned" DTA guys.
  • Fleck really seemed to let the kids have fun with some of the trick plays. As much as he drives me crazy with some of his game day decisions, there is no doubt these kids play for him. Being a college coach has to be insane with all the different hats they must wear now. We have to give Fleck credit for what he has done with the program. The fact he has raised all of our expectations is proof of that.
  • Best wishes to all the seniors on their futures.

Coaching Records - just for the heck of it

Henry Williams - 22 seasons (1900-1921): 136-33-11 (avg 8.2 gms played - 6.2 wins per season)
Bernie Bierman - 16 seasons (1932-41/1945-50): 93-35-6 (avg 8.4 gms played - 5.8 wins per season)
Murray Warmath - 18 seasons (1954-71): 87-78-7 (avg 9.6 gms played - 4.8 wins per season)
Glen Mason - 10 seasons (1997-2006): 64-57 (avg 12.1 gms played - 6.4 wins per season)
PJ Fleck - 8 seasons (2017-24...): 58-39 (avg 12.1 gms played - 7.3 wins per season)

(question - not sure how to account for the ties - not a win and not a loss. counting wins only makes Warmath seem like a .500 coach. anyone have any thoughts?)

**also - during the Williams era, they played as many as 15 games in a season, and as few as 5 games.

***at 7.3 wins/season, Fleck would need to coach 19 seasons to pass Williams for most wins in Gopher history.

If you reach a point in your life where standing in a line to wait for free Mayo seems like a prudent idea, it might be time for an intervention.

I salute your self-control, Slab.
I’m certainly in the “can I just pay to get the thing?” camp.

I was ready to clean house after the UNC and Iowa games. Absolutely hilarious and embarrassing to look back on it
The Iowa loss brought me to my lowest point as a fan since PJ got here, particularly after the dud that 2023 was. What a bounce back! Another example of patience being a virtue and letting things run their course before getting too hasty in assessments.

We left some meat on the bone looking back, but this team is capable of a lot of things and Fleck has built a resilient atmosphere in the locker room. This season could've cratered but these guys fought back and earned a great ending to a season that started pretty sour.

Enjoyed watching the finale of the 2024 edition of MN. Some of the backups, Brosmer, Striggow, Brown. That fourth quarter play action pass to Geers reminded me of the Morgan to Witham fourth down conversion versus Auburn. Nice to see the guys (and fans) let loose. Not gonna lie, the advertising worked. Good job all around.

Yep.....that is what many of us kept trying to get across while people were losing their sh!t.... :)

Thankfully the people who have to make the decisions tend to not be wired like fans and are willing to sit back and let the whole picture develop before reacting.

We bow to your superior knowledge, oh great one.

Look how well your "Keep Ben Johnson" campaign has turned out.

I'm pretty bummed the coaches didn't give him more touches. I know they see these guys in practice everyday and maybe he didn't earn the reps, but man, he's a big boy and and defenses looked like they had no desire to try to tackle him. I feel like when you get a HB that size, you have to give him some touches just to wear out of the other side and force them to tackle. I think this was his only year of eligibility.

VT guy was grabbing the Gopher player's facemask and ripped off his helmet. That should have been the penalty, but was not called or mentioned by the announcer or the "rules analyst"

A 7-2-1 record, for example, is midway between .700 and .800. The result is .750.

I meant to bring it up last night during the game, but I was too wrap up in the game. After one of the Gopher touchdowns, it appeared that the players were almost in a circle and also had their hands straight out. Anyone notice that? Symbolism of what?

Yes, that is what he is talking about, photo of the replay on my tv is too large. But it was after the 3rd TD, the rushing one by DT.
