Post Game Thread: Drake, Koi Lead Gophers to Crazy Comeback Homecoming Win!!

Heard on the radio that we had 13 balls thrown as "contested catches" and our receivers only caught 1. Now some of that was because the refs let a ton of PI go but 0 and 11 are small and can't go up and win balls. Drake didn't throw many bad passes but we just don't have receivers that can go up and make a play. A Daniel Jackson type of wr would be nice to have.

This. The WRs have been softer than baby poo (in particular one that I won't mention). The Gophers typically had at least one guy that could take the ball from defenders, Jackson, CAB, TJ, but no one has stepped up yet this year.

I'll disagree with you on this. Drake was off last night. Several of these missed 'contested catches' were due to bad throws.
Yeah, Drake did not have one of his best games for sure. He missed on a number of throws and had a couple that could've been picked. Pass protection was not good last night so that played into it and the refs letting a lot go in terms of defensive contact definitely didn't help as well.

But this was not one of Drake's best performances to date.....that said, he made the plays he needed to make on that final TD drive to put the team in position to win a game they had little business winning.

You have to put in the work, be a good teammate on and off field in college. Football WR is as much effort to run good routes and attack the football as it is raw talent. Daniel Jackson wasn't the fastest or best athlete but the dude busted his ass to compete. You can have a lot of natural size, and think you have talent and not play. Players decide who plays as much as coaches do. It sounds like he has been through challenging stuff in life. I think he will see the field, but it is earned by everyone who plays, not given to anybody.
Congrats! "Most Tired Cliches In One Post Award" secured!

It’s remarkable how things that were our biggest strengths for over a decade have become our biggest weaknesses (Oline play and sound fundamental defense) and our biggest weaknesses have become our biggest strengths (QB play and explosive defensive plays).
Our offense has been worse than our defense for quite a while now.

Losing our tackle before the season started due to a transfer really hurt us. I'll take the win but clearly wasn't pretty to watch.
Daniels isn’t that good. It’s a very very small part of what ailsus.

Our quarterback had a bad game no other way to spin that. Maybe he was still a little shell shocked after last week, maybe he was feeling under the weather, maybe he had girlfriend problems, maybe all the turmoil down in Arkansas has boiled up into him a little bit, or maybe it was just one of those days. I think he’ll be better next week.

The biggest thing that kept us in this game was the shitting coaching by Prudue. You rush the ball for 253 yards yet you let your quarterback continue to throw the ball for a total of 42 times. The quarterback was going to turn the ball over everybody could see that. Run the damn ball and you win by 24 points.
Bingo! I was screaming this in my head from the stands! Mockobee should have had 30 carries. We should have been blown off the field.

Also, I find it very dissonant that we've had 2 come from behind wins when our offense feels like it's performing the worst it has in a few years.
This is why I love The Drake. I know he got help from the Koi pick 6, but he's a leader who finds ways to put the team in a position to win close games.

Fleck puts the team in position to always play a close game, despite the competition (ohio state excepted).

I do appreciate the never quit of Fleck's teams, but the lack of creativity in scheming is just boring to cheer for.

I also feel our backs are starting to bail to soon on the middle of the ftield. At some point you have to get up in the OL and create your own hole.e a pile.
I am not an offensive line analyst at all but ... I didn't think there were any holes for Mo Ibrahim to run through either. He hit the line quicker and identified a tiny crease instantly and then broke tackles. It seems we are hitting the line slower and its just a pile of bodies...could we bounce some of these outside?
A lotta replays of successful running plays for other teams the line blocks the next guy over and the weakside guard demolishes the unb;ocked tackle or end creating a big hole

Spacing makes a huge difference. We obviously need a better plan. We seem too tight...we just create a pile.

I know this: creative coaching can improve this aspect. Our offensive linemen cannot be this inferior compared to all their opponents. It has be design/scheme related. Think back to the Limegrover shifting offensive linemen game versus Iowa.. Beautiful thing!
Gophers Iowa 2014 298 yards rushing..unfortunately can't find video of line pre snap shifting

I think we’d be a dangerous team if we could figure out how to run the ball. This late in the season f we haven’t figured it out yet I have doubts we can.

I believe on a number of throws the receiver did not execute their route properly. We throw before the guy turns around by design. If I reverse pivot on the wrong foot I'm going to be three yards away from the ball....these types of things happened a lot during the evening. Much more bad routes than bad passes.

There were definitely some clear cases where Drake and a receiver were not on the same page. But there were also a number of throws where he was just a little bit off.

He's a freshman, going to have some ups and downs. Good thing is in spite of a game where he wasn't at his best we still found a way to win.

I believe we have a problem with our DC. Danny Collins has this defense not playing good. I thought this year might be growing pains but almost every aspect of our defense is under preforming. To early to pull the plug but this is bad. DL is missing in action. We could have the worst rushing defense in the country. Danny needs to scrap the HAVCO defense and find something new. The only HAVCO he is creating is on our side of the ball causing player to be out of position and missing tackles. DL rushing lanes look a mess. He needs to start from scratch.

I'm not going to argue about that. I will add that the early knock on PJ was that his teams couldn't mount a comeback for many years. This might be the first year he's had multiple comeback wins. You could say this is growth.

Great to see it - the team had spirit, right down to the end, especially Drake and Koi. Nebraska is ranked for the first time in a while (#25, Writers Poll). Let's pull an upset in an exciting night game! To run the ball , put a Volkswagen in the offensive line.

We are currently #9 in rush defense.
I believe that was before yesterday's game. I think we moved down the list pretty dramatically after yesterday performance. And that was mostly because teams were passing against us. You can't be making the argument that we have a good rushing defense. A team that averages 65 rushing yards per game just put up 253 and should have not abandoned the run and could have added a punch more.

Been writing this for 3 years. We need a new OL coach as well as different blocking schemes. While our kids are doing their best, they haven’t been coached to be effective. Average talent needs above average coaching - not happening.
