Kill told Nelson that he has a 50/50 shot to start next year as a true freshman. I think he should, he fits better into Kill's system than Gray or Shortell. Gray is a good runner but not a great passer, and Shortell is a good passer but not such a good runner. Nelson is extremely good at both. He is leading the Mankato West offense that is averaging 57 points per game through 4 games this season. I think he is going to be great for the gophers and I really think he has a great shot at starting next season.

If he's that good, we'd have a nice problem on our hands.
I'm betting he redshirts and plays in 2013.
It'd be great for him to be as dynamic in college as he is now in HS, really glad he's golden.

Hopefully we will be redshirting him next year and rolling with either Gray/ Shortell or both.

I've seen him play and he is awesome. However their schedule is terrible. They play the three Rochester schools the next three weeks and they might actually be up less then 30 at halftime. Owatonna and West are head and shoulders above the rest of the Big 9. They don't play eachother this year.

Competition will be tough for the starting spot come spring.

Re: 50/50 to start next year...

I call BS

Every coach in America says the same thing to just about every recruit. Duh. :cool02:

It's obviously not always true but coaches are salesmen and they will say just about anything to get a kid to sign on the dotted line....

Can't wait to see Nelson. He was an awesome pick up for obvious reasons and dominates in high school.

Will be exciting to have him in maroon and gold.

Of course it's 50/50, either he does or he doesn't lol. Coming in early will obviously help his case, that's for sure.

Monty, I like your way of thinking, that means I have a 50/50 shot of winning the lottery!

I have no idea what the exact percentage is of Nelson being able to come in and start. I will say that he is an exact fit into Kill's offense, if you watch him play you can't help but think of Chandler Harnish from Northern Illinois. I guess it really depends on how well Gray progresses. If he can figure it out and turn into an adequate passer, he is so dynamic with the ball, he'd have to start. If he can't, I think he'll be a WR/slash type of player....which means it will be between Shortell and Nelson, which would be a coin toss (IMO).

I'm really looking forward to seeing Nelson play too! But to say Nelson is an extremely good runner...really? I have heard that he's mobile, but there's a difference between being mobile and being an extremely good runner.

He is averaging 13 yards per carry so far this season and less than a month ago ran a 4.4 40 yard dash. I understand the competition he is playing right now isn't the best, but still pretty impressive. Maybe I went over the top by saying he was an extremely good runner, I guess you will just have to see for yourself and then you can be the judge. Sorry, I'm just excited to see what he can do for the U!

I have been reading this board for 4 years now, and I am so sick of hearing who the quarterback should be. For the last 2 years all we heard is how much better Gray is than Weber. Now this year we learned how wrong we all were. I think whomever Kill puts behind center for the game is the best option. I just hope we are at ground level and keep improving from here.

Shortell should be our full time starter, imo. But I am satisfied with what the coaches decide.

Few people really argued who was better, weber vs gray. More so it was why gray wasn't playing in garbage time. And many thought he should be, especially when the season was over.

Although, people also did claim gray was always better than weber.

Ohhh no! Why did you bring his 40 time into the conversation. Validity of forty time debate in 5, 4, 3...

The QB discussion does get tiresome.

I'll sum up the last five years:
Gopher nations thoughts (my thoughts):

2007: weber has great potential (weber is terrible)
2008: man weber didn't finish strong but was all big ten (big ten QB play sucks, he's better than I thought but real mediocre)
2009: play gray! Weber sucks! (mix in gray more and more, it can't hurt)
2010: weber still sucks (weber is actually serviceable this year but they should play gray to get him some experience since the team is so bad)
2011: Gray sucks! Play max! (if Shortell is the QB in four years kill is fired in 5)

No chance. Most NFL skill position players can't run a 4.4

I believe you have stated that you are or were a football coach. Could you please elaborate on that. What level/what position? Thanks.

High school football coach. Have coached at the freshman sophomore and varsity levels depending on the year. Have coached defensive backs and wide outs but probably 2/3rds of my seasons are coaching o line.

Not currently coaching. Too much going on. I'll probably go back in a year or two when some family situations are different.

yes he did. yes he did.

Lol, there is no way in hell Phillip Nelson can run a sub 4.5 40, let alone a 4.4.

Having watched him play, I'm guessing he's in the 4.7 range at best. Good speed, but a legit 4.4 is world class speed, and if he had that his only offer wouldn't be from Minnesota, I can tell you that for sure. He'd have offers from all over the place.

His dad said that he did run a 4.48 and a 4.5 40 yard dash, which probably isn't official, but he does have that kind of speed.

Add the .24 as per the rule of thumb, and those times work out to 4.72 and 4.74, which are quite plausible and probably close to his real 40 time.

Where do you suppose they get the 40 time?

Handheld times are meaningless without context. Real 40 times (like those at the combine) are electronic, far more precise, and are generally ~.24 slower than handheld times.

There are maybe 5-6 HS recruits in the entire country who have a legitimate 4.48 40. It is simply not possible that a 210 lb. white kid from Mankato is one of them. Sorry.

None of this means that I'm not excited to have him as a Gopher. I am, and very much so. But he doesn't, and never will, run a 4.48.

I would guess that in my lifetime we've had one player run a legitimate sub 4.5.

That would be Larry in his first couple of years. Maybe not his last, HGH year. Whoops, did I write that?
