Phil Nelson Leaving Gophers

Barreiro just said Nelson is gone.

Statement given to KFAN...wants to go to a school that passes more/utilize his "talent".

This sucks. Both Shortell and apparently Nelson are good reasons as to why you redshirt QBs. Once they redshirt, they don't leave as easily.

This is a big blow.

Up to this point in his career he has been a massive disappointment, so I don't know if I'd say it's a big blow. Leidner and either Streveler/Mckinzy should be just fine. I'm disappointed in Nelson. What a baby.

In a statement, Philip Nelson said, "I want to thank Coach Kill for the opportunity to play football at the University of Minnesota. I have the uttermost respect for Coach Kill and what he's done for this program. I also want to reach out to to all the great Minnesota fans that supported the football program and say thank you. Your effort makes a difference.

"For me, I am looking to play in a system that centers more around the pass game which utilizes my skill sets. I am excited to go out and meet with programs that match up with my talents."

I was thinking the same thing. That being said he needs a year off. I do not think dad wanted him to play as a freshman. Shortell leaving and marquis hurt forced it. The good thing is that we now have a redshirt soph and freshman to replace him. We did not have that in 2012.

Here's Joe C's blog:

Say what you want, it is a loss to lose the QB with the most starts. Kill spent 2 years on him, now he is gone. Leidner is fine, but Streveler and McKinzy are question marks.

Nelson is the second QB to leave in the last two years, joining Max Shortell.

Go Gophers!!

Oh boy. I think this will all come out in the wash depending on where Nelson goes. If he goes to a BCS power conference style team, I see this as bad news. If he goes to a mid major, I would say he was feeling Tundra Tebow footsteps.

It could also show that he wasn't happy about being jerked back and forth from being "the guy" so much this year.

I'm bummed.

Wow pretty surprising news, I had pretty high hopes for him coming in but he never really got to that level. Would have liked to see him stay and compete for the starting job but I'm pretty confident that Leidner or Streveler can at least get the job done as well as Nelson has.

Sick to my stomach right now.
absolutely hurts the program in many ways.
GAH.

Leidner better have been annointed behind the scenes or something.

Wouldn't you think he should prove he can pass the ball with consistency in an offense that doesn't ask their QB to do a lot first? That doesn't make any sense at all. I'd get what he is saying if he was completing 65% of his passes and had a 3:1 TD to INT ration or something. If you can't be consistent in this offense, then I don't think you're going to be able to do it in any other offenses.

Plus, he knew what kind of offense Kill has always run. Just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

We're back to having very little depth and experience at QB once again. Not good.

I'll be curious the hear the real reason......................if we ever do.

Thanks to Philip for his contributions to our program. The pass to Engel in the Nebraska game was a beauty. Best of luck to Phil wherever he ends up. Sorry to see him leave the program.

Is this a loss? Yes, he has the most experience of any QB on the roster. However, lets look at this objectively. The two QBs were arguably very close last year. We end up keeping the one with more eligibility. Could be a good thing in the end if Leidner continues to develop. Or, perhaps this leaves the door open for someone else in the next two years and they won't have to unseat an upperclassman who started since he was a freshman.

Looking at the positives.

It's always interesting to see that current players find out about news like this from GopherHole tweets, here is Carter and Maye finding out from GH:

We were so close to having an upperclassman as QB. Shows you just never know with 18-22 year olds. Someone check on e. bigelow!
