Pete Rose dead at age 83

As for this Rose's enshrinement to Cooperstown, I would vote, No.

I do think it's a shame that his name was never put on the ballot to let the Baseball Writers decide, as they were allowed with Barry Bonds & Roger Clemons.
He should be in the hall, he earned it.

Just read his wiki page. Pete was a great American and entertainer! I am not a seam head so put the gap toothed try hard in or exclude

Sure, But I don't think a gambling addiction should erase his production on the field.

I have no doubt there are many worse human beings in the hall of fame.
🤷
I'm sure there are, but if the worse human beings did not commit infractions that caused the outcomes and legitimacy of MLB games it's not a valid comparison in my book.

Regardless, he should have at least been able to be on the ballot.

I would have not voted for his inclusion. He made his bed, and also lied about it for several decades afterwards.

was reading an article (can't remember where). according to the article, about 20 years ago, Rose met with then-Commissioner Bud Selig. Rose, Selig and their respective advisors reportedly worked out a deal: Rose would make a public statement admitting he bet on baseball and taking responsibility for his actions. as part of the deal, Rose would agree to stop gambling, and stop hanging out at Casinos and associating with known gamblers. If Rose met all of the terms, MLB would allow him to be considered for the Hall of Fame.

according to the article, everyone shook hands and agreed to the deal.

the next day, Rose was seen doing an autograph and memorabilia signing - at a Casino. Selig found out, blew a gasket and the deal was off.

Pete Rose was his own worst enemy.

That's an interesting way of framing what he did.

Also while we're on the topic of bad human beings, he also had a relationship with an underage girl.

Heard Bob Costas comment that you can't really tell the complete story of baseball without Pete Rose. His suggestion is to induct him and note on the plaque what he did to be banned.
Yes, he was banned from MLB. It's the National Baseball Hall of Fame, not the MLB Hall of Fame.

I completely disagree with Costas on the "plaque disclaimer" approach. If you need an explanation of what kept you out of the HoF for whatever period of time, then you don't deserve to get the honor to begin with. Ditto for Bonds & Clemons if they ever get it.

It should be about what qualified one for the honor, however and whenever they made the grade.

It's Pass/Fail.

This chat reminded me of that little twins hof store that was in that yellow brick building across from the dome.

I remember that story

Putting aside the "does he belong in the hall" commentary, I'm seeing a lot of comments online about Pete being arguably the greatest hitter of all time, which is definitely not even close to being the case.

Williams, Aaron, Ruth, Mays, Bonds, Pujols, Cobb, Gehrig, Hornsby, Foxx, Musial and plenty of others are slam dunk choices over Pete.
A case can be made that Carew, Boggs and Gwynn were also far more advanced at the plate than Rose.

I'd still put Rose in the HOF based on what he actually did between the lines considering MLB's current promotion of gambling specifically targeting others that are addicted. My tolerance for hypocrisy has limits.

Yes agreed on those guys as well.

To be clear there’s no denying Pete would be in the hall based on his play alone, but he’s not on the short list of greatest hitters ever.

Hmmm I always assumed he was one of the greatest hitters of alll time. Gonna need a gleeman to set this straight

He was a good to really good player for a really long time, which definitely deserves a ton of respect. There is just a long list of more dominant hitters. His longevity is almost unmatched though.

I will add Ichiro as just as good of a compiler as Rose.

9 times in his career he went 0-6. July 22nd, 2003 Seattle at Minnesota he went 0-6
I'm shocked the amount is that high.
On the opposite side, Ichiro also had 7 games in which he had at 5 hits.

If he had debuted in MLB at age 20 or 21 instead of 27, I think he would have flown by the Hit King.

This will be Ichiro's first year on the HoF ballot. His inclusion should be unanimous.
