Patrick Reusse Recruiting Joke/Scare

Also. Reusse is not a journalist. He's a columnist. Big difference. He doesn't report. He is paid to observe and write interesting things about what he observes.

Don't understand why you continue to backup a mean media member with a terrible attitude towards, well... everything.

You must be Reusse, huh.

There's not a significant difference. A sports journalist tells you about specific games and events surrounding teams. A sports columnist's job is to give an informed opinion about sports. The distinction is extremely fuzzy at best. But it's not a blank check. Making up stuff isn't acceptable for a journalist or a pundit.

Because I think it's freakin' hilarious that people are calling for his job over an obvious and timely joke.

+1. Maybe Gopher fans should worry more about winning more than 2 B10 titles in football/basketball the last 45 years (goes without saying that's the worst record in the conference)

“Cynicism is what passes for insight among the mediocre.”—Joe Klein. Time Magazine.

Heard him say this tonight on PBS Newshour, and it made me think of Reusse. Actually, I think it fits him to a "T".

Journalist: Facts
Columnist: Opinions on facts + a schtick that keeps people reading their column.

Reusse's schtick: Satire

That tweet: Satire

I feel Reusse shouldn't have put 16 and 17 year old kids in that situation regardless of his intentions.

Because I think it's freakin' hilarious that people are calling for his job over an obvious and timely joke.

He gave no indication of sarcasm, and while we are used to Reusse's constant snark and negativity, others are not, such as the Kentucky writer who had the audacity to think that some Minnesota writer was tweeting true information. If you saw a tweet from a Stanford beat writer after their loss to USC saying that Reid Travis was no longer interested in them, why would you think they were lying? Tyus Jones didn't seem to get the joke either, and you seem to be in the minority on this thread supporting Reusse's actions.

Not only is that fact completely irrelevant to this discussion, but it is not my responsibility as a fan to win Big Ten titles, that's for the coach and players to do, I just watch and cheer on the team. Looking back on some of your previous posts, I have to wonder if you even like the Gophers.

Agreed. Otherwise, the tweet fit with the situation.

No it didn't. We were 13-1 going in and winning. Who cares if it was a ugly game at the time? Stupid tweet no matter when it came.

Streak Beasts ‏@StreakBeasts
Notre Dame came close to scoring, but came up short when Alabama came out of the tunnel #BCS

Now that's an appropriate joke, doesn't report anything as fact, and singles no one out, yet its funny. I will be honest he shouldn't be fired for what he tweeted, but 1500 should talk to him about tweeting something as fact, it does make them look bad, and it hurts their credibility not only locally but also at a national level. Also should come out and say that he is sorry, and say it was bad attempt at a joke. For all of those who are defending Reusse, please defend the telling the fans to shut up tweet, would love to hear brucekaupa's take on it, so far everyone who is defending him has completely ignored the fact that he tweeted that.

And to think all of this fuss could have been quelled with the simple use of a #jk or somesuch...

As I said previously, the biggest issue I see is calling out Tyus and Rashad by name. It's fine to make a joke of that nature, but if you want to use specific people you need to make it obvious it is a joke. He did not do that.

I was more appalled by his second tweet about not cheering than the Tyus one, but still can't post it like that.

If I put out a tweet as a reporter or columnist during the BCS championship saying:

"BREAKING: Johhny Manziel to transfer to Notre Dame."

What would most people conclude from that tweet? Especially a person who wasn't watching the title game and was just checking their twitter for the day. If you are going to name a specific person and word it like news. You need to make it very obvious you are joking.

This isnt remotely funny, especially to people that follow recruiting closely as do I.
sorry pat, we aint laughing.

we would love to see these 2 guys at U of Minnesota

Reusse is one of the seriously mentally ill old people who never got diagnosed because of when he grew up. He has kept this diagnosis very hush hush, and paid alot of money to keep it that way. He claims that he was picked on in high school for being fat and unathletic, he was beaten up on several occasions, on top of being raped by a varsity athlete on the fb and bb teams of his high school, and he has since figured out a way to be a sports star, and also get revenge of a sorts by becoming a sports columnist and venting his anger and his rage on those who he feels are partly responsible for what happened to him in his past. His going to St Thomas and now resenting the attention the Gophers get compared to his Tommies, is very fitting. Just goes to further his illness but it has not yet progressed to the point of having to be committed, although family members have considered this option. Add in the aspect of having a serious drinking problem, and his coming across as a person who thinks way too highly of himself and his role in society, is just a cover for his real insecurities. He is a very sad, unhappy person, and all that money he makes goes towards drugs, alchohal and prostitutes. I am posting this information, not because I like Patrick Reusse, or because I don't like the Gophers, in fact, I love the Gophers. But I have a family member who suffers from the same mental illness, and their actions and behaviors stem from things in their past that are not their fault and I just feel badly that Gopher fans speak so badly of Patrick. He acts like he likes to get Gopher fans all riled up, but in all actuality he wants Gopher fans to love and embrace him as one of their own. I think that if we all did embrace him, and show him the love and respect that he never got as a child, he might get better?!

Oh, btw, jk.

So, he's undiagnosed but kept his diagnosis hush hush. Got it.

Making tweets that could be factual, especially with specific names and dates, isn't really satire.

"Gerald Ford died today" - not obvious satire, not funny, could easily be factual when reported

"Gerald Ford was eaten by wolves" - obvious satire, funny, very unlikely to be factual when reported

Do you see the difference?

Yes.

Two recruits announcing in unison at halftime of a 17-14 game they are attending they have dropped the school from consideration: Very unlikely to be factual.

What did they do? Call a press conference in front of Famous Dave's? Walk over to Maxey before he left (after making his token appearance so he could say he was there) and give him a scoop? Wake up Sid?

And the second one: Not funny. Now, say Richard Nixon's corpse crawled out of its grave and strangled Gerald Ford...now that would be funny.

You know that because you're very informed about the situation. Many people are not very knowledgeable about the recruiting scene, even big Gopher fans.

Those with half a brain would know that Gerald Ford was not eaten by wolves.

If it weren't for 'I hate Wisconsin more than you do/I hate Iowa more than you do/I hate the local media more than you do', there would be nothing left of GopherHole.

Those with half a brain would know that Gerald Ford was not eaten by wolves.

What if he was senselessly eaten by a lion at a convenience store?

(Thanks for getting me on this line of thinking, dpodoll68...)

Watch this and then tell me it's not funny:
