I would be most pissed of if I was The U rather than just a fan.
I've beaten this drum since I first got an account here, and it's the reason I respond to posts like this, and also let 1500, Star Tribune, KFAN know that I will not tune into their station or click their links, because they employ jack-holes like Reusse:
Every team is trying to attract fans. The Vikings have the NFL marketing machine doing a lot of their work, the Wild have a built in rabid base, and to a lesser extent so do the Twins. The U is the entity that really needs to swing the casual observer to become a ticket buying fan, or at least avid TV viewer, merchandise purchaser.
Let's say I'm Joe from Wilmar. I'm a sports fan, but not a rabid fan. I'm probably not going to find GopherHole, The Daily Gopher, or would have found MV's mothballed site (RIP). I might get the newspaper, but probably listen to some radio as well. Now, since I'm not a rabid fan, I'm going to assume that Reusse, Souhan, Barreiro (sp?), et al. are more informed than me about Gopher sports. When virtually all I hear about Gopher sports is insulting, why would I think there is a reason for me to pay attention to those teams?
These writers and radio personalities might not agree, but they are largely responsible for the perception of teams to the typical sports fan.
Not everyone in Minnesota attended The U, and does not have a built in love for the institution, but that does not stop other college teams from building up their fan-bases. I do not want the teams to be handled as if they can't be criticized, quite the opposite. I watch, or attend virtually every Gopher Hoops, Hockey, and Football game, but I will not pretend to act as if I know a hell of a lot about what went right or wrong with each game.
Phil Miller is a prime example of what I've seen the past few cycles with the media in this town. When he came in to cover Gopher Football, he provided insight and knowledge that I did not have, he was critical of certain areas, and provided depth to what he was covering. And now that he is moving to cover the Twins, his articles have become much more vanilla, and provides little of what I don't know. He has gotten lazy, as a writer, which I've observed as being very typical in this market.
I'll stop my Jerry McGuire here, but (unlike some media members) would be happy to continue a dialogue about this topic.
