Patrick Reusse Recruiting Joke/Scare

Haha are you defending what this guy wrote? Somehow other writers read it and picked out a completely different meaning... That Tyus and Rashad acutally did drop Minny from their lists. How could they possibly thought that?! I respect your contributions to the site but try to keep your troll comments to yourself.

After casually listening to Reusse (the most recent time being in the evening after the gophs/state game) and hearing the Reusse tell of his neverending love of the NFL and its superiority over all other sports, I have to say I'm not impressed. Its almost like he is pissed when he has to cover anything else.
Reusse's a turd, but I just don't see how the writer from Kentucky didn't know any better. Why would both players choose to eliminate a program from consideration at halftime? He should have stopped and thought about how odd those circumstances would be before running off and announcing that as fact.

Looks like just another way to say, "wow, this is some ugly, ugly basketball."

Could have easily just said something to the effect of "wouldn't be shocked if every recruit took MN off their list after this half #Brutal" or "I think MN may have just gained interest from every WI recruit after that half #Boring" makes the same point without making it "news" or calling out Tyus and Rashad.

I got it was a joke right away, but felt it was in VERY poor taste and very poorly worded.

The second tweet about not cheering was also ridiculous, more so than the list tweet. Just dumb.

In today's world where "reporters" are trying to be the first ones to break the news, checking up on the facts is usually not a part of the equation.

I still don't buy that Reusse "hates" Minnesota, but I have a major issue with this tweet. Why is it ok for an adult (much less a sports journalist with some power) to knowingly spread false information that could lead to a backlash against a high school kid? If Patrick wanted to make a joke about the Gophers first half performance that is fine, but to involve high school kids in it is ridiculous. It's not funny, it's some sort of mixture of sad and strange.

BAM!

It's one thing to attempt to be funny with a tweet about the 1st half; it's dumb but right in his wheelhouse to make fun of Gopher fans for cheering for what they're watching. But it's another thing to say something regarding the college decisions of high school kids and pass it off with the fourm he is provided. A UK reporter went with it, which shows that this should have a more serious penalty than simply being ignored by the Star Tribune & 1500, but it won't be because they're a bunch of gutless pansies.

If the Star Trib had any integrity they would fie him today.
Both these kids and the U need an immediate apology.

Hey everyone. Twitter is not journalism.

Hasn't GW proven that?

It was a feeble attempt to try and be funny. I commend Tyus for how he handled it. I like it when kids are respectful and use terms like "sir", even if the subject certainly isn't worthy of the title.

Agreed. It's sad that all of Reusse's "humor" seems to always be an attempt at cutting down the Gophers a peg. Overall it's toxic to casual and diehard fans. Hate that we as a fanbase even have to deal with this kind of nonsense.

Yeah, Reusse is terrible. The problem is that all of the sportswriters in town and most of the broadcast guys (including the young guys) appear to have bought the line that it is unprofessional to be a homer, (which is probably true), but that the only way to forestall such an accusation is to be so unrelentingly negative about Minnesota teams and their fans as to be impossible for anybody in the state to stomach. And in case you were wondering, Reusse once said that his happiest moment in sports history was when the Gophers lost to Holy Cross, and he got to go tell everybody he could find wearing Gophers gear at the NCAA basketball tournament that their team had choked. It's an attitude that appears pervasive amongst the media in this town, genuine disdain for rubes who actually enjoy sports and cheer for their local teams.

While it was fairly obvious to anyone who knows Reusse and was watching the game that he was joking, this was inexcusable. He has to know that not everyone who sees his tweet knows that sarcastic jerk is his schtick or is watching the game. So to just lay out that line with no hint of sarcasm is unacceptable to anyone with even a minimum of journalistic integrity.

So you're saying it's all Sid's fault?:)

This wouldn't be a big deal if everyone of vested interest followed Reusse on twitter.

I used to hate the guy until I started following his twitter account. Personally, I find it pretty amusing as it's non-stop snark/sarcasm directed at anything (certainly not Gopher specific). If you're familiar w/ his usual tweets you wouldn't take it seriously for a second.

Looking at that tweet in a vacuum it looks pretty bad.

That said, I was at the game last night and my fellow gamewatchers and I thought it was pretty funny after that brutal first half.

I've defended Reusse often but I do agree with this.

The irony is Reusse often points out the miss-steps of athletes using social media and then.........................................

Clearly fat pat has some kind of mental disability if he actually thought his little joke was funny. Does anyone know if he is autistic? Don't see how 1 bad half of basketball would have any kind of influence on a couple of recruits. It's pretty obvious that isn't the way the gophers prefer to play and not the way Tubby wants to play. I think recruits are smart enough to know that. Apparently fatty isn't.

I agree with this take. The first tweet I got was a joke, so it wasn't that big a deal (although I agree it was stupid / could have been better worded or clarified). The second about MN fans shutting up was just dumb and an awful take. You rip on the Gophers for bad bball, but then when they turn it on, rip on the fans for cheering it? Ridiculous

Edit: to clarify, I think the first tweet was still awful from a journalistic integrity standpoint as others have mentioned, even to those who got the joke

Agreed. Can't explain away or laugh off behavior that could not possibly be less appropriate.

I would be most pissed of if I was The U rather than just a fan.

I've beaten this drum since I first got an account here, and it's the reason I respond to posts like this, and also let 1500, Star Tribune, KFAN know that I will not tune into their station or click their links, because they employ jack-holes like Reusse:

Every team is trying to attract fans. The Vikings have the NFL marketing machine doing a lot of their work, the Wild have a built in rabid base, and to a lesser extent so do the Twins. The U is the entity that really needs to swing the casual observer to become a ticket buying fan, or at least avid TV viewer, merchandise purchaser.

Let's say I'm Joe from Wilmar. I'm a sports fan, but not a rabid fan. I'm probably not going to find GopherHole, The Daily Gopher, or would have found MV's mothballed site (RIP). I might get the newspaper, but probably listen to some radio as well. Now, since I'm not a rabid fan, I'm going to assume that Reusse, Souhan, Barreiro (sp?), et al. are more informed than me about Gopher sports. When virtually all I hear about Gopher sports is insulting, why would I think there is a reason for me to pay attention to those teams?

These writers and radio personalities might not agree, but they are largely responsible for the perception of teams to the typical sports fan.

Not everyone in Minnesota attended The U, and does not have a built in love for the institution, but that does not stop other college teams from building up their fan-bases. I do not want the teams to be handled as if they can't be criticized, quite the opposite. I watch, or attend virtually every Gopher Hoops, Hockey, and Football game, but I will not pretend to act as if I know a hell of a lot about what went right or wrong with each game.

Phil Miller is a prime example of what I've seen the past few cycles with the media in this town. When he came in to cover Gopher Football, he provided insight and knowledge that I did not have, he was critical of certain areas, and provided depth to what he was covering. And now that he is moving to cover the Twins, his articles have become much more vanilla, and provides little of what I don't know. He has gotten lazy, as a writer, which I've observed as being very typical in this market.

I'll stop my Jerry McGuire here, but (unlike some media members) would be happy to continue a dialogue about this topic.

The Gophers are the next topic of discussion on Zulgad's show. Tune in if you have the guts.

UPDATE: Zulgad brushed the first half off. Says we need to split on the road for the public to really jump on the bandwagon.

I think to most media members, and even many fans, the pro sports are the big time and the Gophers/college sports are minor league.

You feel better about yourself when you cover/follow the big time, and you might as well kick a little sand on the minor league team....especially when they are down.

Reusse loves to needle Gopher fans and get them riled up. It has worked again for him. He will continue to do it for as long as he can log onto GopherHole and read threads like this. The Strib and KSTP are never going to fire Reusse because they love how he can stir the passions of sports fans in Minnesota. Nobody does it better.

Reusse is not a sports journalist. He is a sports commentator. He has been very well paid by two local newspapers and a local radio station for almost 40 years to give his opinions about sports and the local teams. His readers and listeners have devoured everything he has been offering for that entire period of time. Reusse will retire only when people stop paying attention to him.

Unregistered, you absolutely nailed it. I said earlier that Reusse's (and others) attitude/sense of humor is toxic to both the casual and diehard fan.

It's toxic to the causual fan, for the reasons Unregistered eloquently stated.

It's toxic to the diehards, like those of us on Gopherhole, in that it infuriates us to the point where we argue over and dissect an uninspired tweet attempting to be funny, by a sad, pathetic man who hasn't written or done anything truly relevant in a very long time.

Nobody is asking the media to have a bunch of homers on staff to spoonfeed us Maroon and Gold ambrosia all day. We're just asking them to find some folks who don't take absolute glee in our team when the chips are down.

I have to admit, having the Fargo Forum on the kitchen table when I'm visiting family back home once in a while, the homerism on their sports page makes their community look unsophisticated and their writers unprofessional. As much as the antics of our local snarks drives us nuts, I'll take it over the Fargo's of the world. I suppose that, if I wanted the local media to be homers, I'd also be the type that's OK with the less sophisticated lifestyle and neighbors you end up with in a place like Fargo/Moorhead. Nice towns, but I have no desire to live there.

Interesting comment.

There's nothing wrong with a little "Snark" to piss off the GH Gestapo!!!

I love the fact that a dufus from Kentucky took Reusse seriously. Not a big fan that Tyus didn't see the snark in Reusse's comments though. Hopefully Reusse will be more careful when dealing with teenagers in the future. Other than that...the Gophers really were abysmal that first half. Good thing Austin showed up in the 2nd half.

OK, Gopher fans are "the Gestapo." and "I love" the fact that some guy from Kentucky took Reusse seriously.

But, oh yeah, let's "be more careful when dealing with teenagers."

Do what I say, not what I do.
