Other Bowl Games Thread

Perhaps after this if you google “gutless” you’ll get routed to Cignetti’s Wikipedia page.

Was hoping Indiana would give them a fight but they showed the Ohio State game wasn't a fluke and they don't belong with the top teams.....they are good....but they are not good enough to compete for the CFP title.

Said in another thread that the other guys need to do well in the playoff, Indiana, SMU, ASU and Boise State....if they don't it will lead to teams like Alabama getting in ahead of them based on SOS.

The reality is that Indiana has had 2 shots against really good teams and has fallen flat in both cases. Their high powered offense that blew out the bad teams, managed 15 against Ohio State and is sitting at 3 in the 4th quarter against Notre Dame.

Indiana had a heck of a year......but they have shown that while they were better than most of the Big Ten they were not good enough to compete with the CFP level teams.

They would have lost regardless......but there were several huge mistakes made on defense that would have kept things closer (in the first half at least). Bad angles and breaking contain on 3rd down are not signs of a great team.

The SMU/Penn State game tomorrow will be a stinker like this one…
I’m not so sure about that. The SMU QB is a special college QB, not sure it will translate to the NFL, but he’s very good.

And the SMU NIL has bought them a damn good team. They would beat the wheels off of Indiana.

I am a HUGE Sean McDunough fan so it was disappointing to hear him towing the ESPN company line absolutely ripping into the B1G at the end. He really went after my favorite conference.

It seems like elite talent level teams almost always crush the underdogs/overachievers when they have a lot of time to prepare like for bowl games. I don't have data to back it up. It's just my perception. I think overachievers often have something gimmicky or unique about how they win that can catch teams a little off guard when they only have a week to prepare. For Indiana, maybe an example is the back shoulder throw. A lot of teams do it, but they were truly exceptional at it. Well, Notre Dame had two weeks of practice to learn to shut that down and they did. When the teams are equally prepared and most of the surprises are taken away, talent wins out and often emphatically.

I've only seen SMU play a little, but their quarterback is exceptionally talented at scrambling and throwing on the run. He is very unique. I think that's hard to prepare for over just a week. Penn State has had two weeks to scheme something up to take that away tomorrow. Will they succeed?

Generally speaking the blue blood are more talented always. You have to have a wrinkle such as what Boise did to ou all those years ago. Cignetti tried to double down and got scared in the limelight not realizing his team was clearly not as talented. You have to take risks as the dog in a timely fashion. Think smu and PSU will be decided by each qb who will win or lose the game. If they’re equal psu wins. Rest is as you would apply the usual logic

You watch this late surge and think of all the times cignetti was a coward early in the game
Announcer did say that Notre Dame had their backups in on D as well so that probably helped with the garbage time production.

Why hasn't Indiana gone for it on 4th down? I mean, they just gave up without trying.
I haven't followed Indiana much this season (Cinderella story or not), but I was surprised when they went for the field goal after (according to the statistic shown) going for in on 4th down consistently when in the opponents' territory all season long.

Cold night. maybe had someting to do with it, but unless Notre Dame shows something different going forward I think their offense isn't that good. I've never Leonard was that good. The RB tandem is very good and there's speed on the outside, but they just didn't impress me. Defense is another matter. Lots of athleticism that the coaches deploy well.

Like MNVCGUY wrote in another entry, Indiana had a great season and ran up some impressive scores, but they had a creampuff schedule and only beat a 7-5 Michigan team by 5 at home. I'm not going to diss a team that ended up 11-2, but it's difficult to argue that things didn't fall their way big-time in 2024.

The reaction online has been hilarious. This apparently "proves" Indiana didn't deserve to be in the playoffs and the SEC should have gotten one more.

Apparently games like this don't count:

seems like the Indiana players and especially the coach wilted under the pressure. That can happen your first time under the bright lights. I kinda get it. I thought the Indiana OL was completely overmatched all night probably the biggest difference between the two teams and when you get hit for a 98 yard TD that’ll take a little starch out of you.

Yes, it was pretty clear most of the night that Indiana couldn't match ND's athleticism.

Aided by a weak schedule, Indiana went 11-1 in the regular season. Still, 11-1 is 11-1 and should be enough for a power conference team to be among the 12 playoff teams. What Indiana proved last night was that they weren't good enough to advance in the playoffs against a much more athletically elite team.

Which is fine. The crazy thing is people are acting like these games should all go down to the wire. I posted in another thread that Indiana losing by 10 points last night is still a closer game than all of the last 6 national championship games. Three of the six ended as 4+ score games.

Imagine what it's gonna be like if Ohio State loses tonight.. It's annoying though. At this point just let the SEC play themselves for the Douche Bowl and let the rest of us have college football back.
