Only for posters who played at least HS...

Good Old Bob MacDonald...

McDonald still looks and sounds the same, he's gotten a little slower, but he'll be coaching until he takes his last breath. Hard to believe he's only the 3rd basketball coach my school ever had!

What about me? I played for the coach with the most wins in high school basketball in this state. I should be an expert too, right? (I think he's up to 800 something and climbing.)

Your post made me think fondly of my youthful years cheering for the Chisholm teams in the 70s. I'm not from there but grew up close enough to the Iron Range to always cheer for the northern teams in the state tournament. I didn't realize Bob McDonald was still coaching. I did a Google search and saw a couple articles that indicated he reached 900(!) wins in Jan 2009. Amazing!

By the way, I didn't play high school basketball -- Title IX came too late for me. :( Hope its OK for me to post nonetheless.

McDonald has been coaching so long that he was Joel Maturi's high school coach! Joel is now a few years from retiring and McDonald might outlast him, too.

basketball and have some knowledge of the game. I cannot believe the neagative posts on Westbrook. He literally won the two "trophy" games last year against the Badger's. Tonight if you
were there or saw the 3-1 break against the Gophers where Westbrook was the defender. without using his hands he slid over in front of the guy with the ball and caused him to travel.
he also made a key shot with the clock expiring on a runner inside the key. He has the guts of an English bull dog and the heart of a lion. He also made several other outstanding plays in addition to getting the ball to Hoff. Is he cock sure of himself? absolutley. These dick wads who have never played the game come on here like they've played in the NBA for 10 years and lamb blast him. If you have not played the game. Shut the f--k up. And yes, I did play the game and actually guarded former Gopher Ollie Shannon when he played at Metro JC.

Wow man are you going to tell your kids that same story one day.

Westbrook is one of those players, that like him or not, you have to recognize how much we need him. He's the only player on our team that has the balls and/or the ability to take over a game, and has won a number of them for us. That doesn't mean he doesn't have his flaws - but we need him. I'm actually worried about who will fill his role next year.

Supposedly McDonald named his son Joel after Joel Maturi, I don't know how true that is but I've heard it forever. Joel McDonald owned the state scoring record until a few years ago, so it must have worked! I was on the team for his 700th win and we thought that was huge back in 1997-98. I think he's had only 15ish losing seasons since he started coaching.

A player like Westbrook would have had it hard on our team in high school. There were a few guys with that attitude when I was in school that got in the coach's doghouse a few times because their actions would appear that is was all "me, me, me." I could see Westbrook's style working fine when teams are winning, but if things aren't going so well I can understand how he'd frustrate fans and coaches.

I'm with GL too, he has the balls to try to take over a game and get things going. I can't think of anyone else on our team who is willing to keep attacking defenses the way he does. We need someone tenacious who can keep opposing teams worried about his ability to score, and hopefully that opens things up for a couple of the other guys to get in a position for better shots.

If I went to another school, I would probably dislike Westbrook as a player, but boy am I glad he is on our side!

Great first post - welcome to the board Trixie.

Congratulations, you played varsity basketball in the Twin Cities area in the late 90's.

I hope you understand my post was completely sarcastic. Not a single accomplishment I listed says anything about my basketball skills or knowledge other than my shining moment guarding Horvath.

Rupert spouting off that he guarded a former gopher as a reason why he understands basketball is hilarious to me and that those that never played can't speak on the subject is even more hilarious.

Basketball is a fun game but it's not complex. Those that make it out to be are trying to fool people.
