***OFFICIAL OLE MISS VS MINNESOTA RD OF 32 NCAA TOURNAMENT IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Besides the game-winning shot, Battle with some huge rebounds during crunch time. She's an elite rebounding guard and the main reason the Gophers haven't missed Heyer's rebounding much this season. Hart with a huge bucket and some big free throws in the 4th. Braun a huge 3. And don't forget the rare 3 from Glenn. No surprise at the great team effort from our Gophers today.

Way to go Gophers! After watching, playing, and coaching much basketball for most of my life, I often reach a level where if the announcers irritate me three times I turn them way down for a while, or even off!

The Gopher radio feed is usually 15 to 20 seconds behind actual play, so that doesn’t work…

IMHO, I felt the announcers talked too much about how wonderful South Carolina was and not enough on how well the Gophers were playing …

That being said, I still like my idea of letting the players call their own fouls and letting the referees just sit and watch!

After all, in all my years of playing ball and coaching, the players often called their own fouls, and we were fine!

I would also like to have the team come out great in the third quarter and then “coast” to the end rather than these rallies that are getting my medicated blood pressure up …

Woo Hoo!!!
South Carolina?

Battle rebounded great has most of the year. 3rd quarter we got a little dribble happy and to much one on one. But I have to give this team all the credit they put it all on the line. Played with heart and Hart. Glad Battle made final bucket. I have criticized her shooting in the past glad she made me eat my words. Good job well done!!!!!

I am not a great basketball mind so I have a question for smarter people then me. Battle make the bucket. They review it. .08 seconds are on the clock but I watched the replay and Ole Miss coach never calls a time out after the shot. Clock is not stopped after every basket so why did they give Ole Miss a TO and .08 seconds and just not let the game end after the made shot.

What an amazing game and atmosphere today. Braun’s 3’s early, Battle n Tori handling the heat from OM D and limiting TO’s once again was the winning formula. The key was fouling out McMahon with 4 minutes left as she is their go to bucket player. I lost my voice screaming @ the refs from the loft.
Nobody can say MN has homer refs and
Coach Yo should have gotten a couple of T’s 4 chasing/ yelling @ the refs onto the court. So happy for Battle, Braun, Hart , McKinney n the entire team that stayed with the process to get this W. I do wonder if GG is injured or lost some confidence ? I hope she doesn’t have the transfer blues. Sorry I’m so excited/ happy for this team that I’m officially rambling- Go Gophers !!

Regarding the commentary, you do have some options to mute your TV and then use a phone app to sync your TV to your phone and use your home radio network. One good option is Tunity (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tunity-hear-any-muted-tv-live/id944230455). The link is for the Apple version, but I believe there is an Android version as well. I have a friend who does this and then instead of headphones he connects his phone to a Bluetooth speaker and has great audio. Thought I'd toss this out.

Spot on! We needed every point!

Is it my imagination, but has Grocholski regressed?
It's in her head. She had that one in the first half where she caught it on the block when the defender fell. She pivoted and was looking to pass and I think turned it over - earlier in the year she goes right up with the shot and makes it.

Just got home. I’m in my mid 30s and brought my dad. This weekend was one of my favorite ever. The barn was alive and it’s so much having a state that cares.

So happy Glenn, Tonga, Hart and Battles last shot ever at the barn went in that all contributed the the great 4th Q

I see so many fans make so many dumb comments early in a season or during a game, pretty much based on a very small and sometimes immediate sample size, and then come back with the "Glad I had to eat my words" comment. Drives me nuts. #1, it shows me you don't really understand that basketball (like most sports) has ebbs and flows. It's like you've never been around the game, or around coaches, teams and players. #2, I wonder why, instead of making a dumb comment out of frustration (which really seems to drain the basketball IQ of a lot of fans) why not wait to see how it plays out before you give a (what will turn out to be a stupid, short-sighted and not very accurate) take on what is happening.

Friday and again today, I kept thinking about the dummy who, early in Friday's game, was imploring Battle to stop shooting. #1, Coach P., on many occasions has mentioned that she wants Battle to look for shots and be a threat from the point guard position, and #2, she has been a clutch shooter more often than not. Not sure if that person is "Glad to eat they're words" but I'm pretty sure they'll show their sport ignorance and inability to tamper down frustration by doing it again if Battle happens to hit another 1 for 5 slumps that happens to almost all players at some point. I wonder if that type of person lashes out and spews negativity at their job every time something doesn't go perfectly, and how that goes over with co-workers and business owners.

It's comparable to telling a guy who got an answer wrong on a drivers test or real estate test that they will never be a realtor or should never even think of trying to drive a car.

As far as the game goes, great to see Braun knock down some big shots going into the half. Good to see Hart get to a good spot late in the game to get a lay-up when we really needed it. Thought we got good minutes from Glenn and it's becoming more and more obvious that Tori is a super important piece. BTW, Battle is also a true stud-does so many things really well, a lot of stuff that most fans don't really notice and nobody else on this team is currently capable of doing. GG really struggled, but it was good to see her get some big boards and knock down a big 3 during the comeback. Ole Miss is a tough team that made some good adjustments to take some things away from us in the 3rd quarter, but Coach Dawn and the players locked down on defense and found some ways to get buckets late.

Finally, I thought the officials were fine. I honestly believe that people who constantly complain about officials should be required to go out and do it themselves for a season. The idea that they purposely try to call the game in favor of one team or another is so outlandish! Do they miss calls? Yes, probably 4-5 a game (in a game that you could honestly call a violation or foul or 3 on somebody every single trip down the floor). Do they do it with intent to give one team the advantage? No. While some Gophers fans seemed to think we were getting screwed, I guarantee that the Ole Miss and Green Bay fans on the other side this week, are also 100% convinced that they were getting screwed. Nobody was getting screwed. If you believe otherwise, get out there and do the job yourself and see what fans say about you. They obviously missed the out of bounds play that the Gophers should have challenged in the first half, but I also think they gave Battle the benefit of the doubt on an early charge she took (late in the first half or early in the second). The late charge she was definitely an amazing defensive play and huge for the team. I also disagreed with the flagrant foul called early. I thought that was a pretty simple rip-through in securing a rebound and Tori was in the wrong place. I used to get 3 black eyes a year on those exact plays, which I just considered basketball plays. I didn't think there was any intent on that, but I also realize that officials are super-sensitive to any contact ( inadvertent or otherwise) around the head or the face.

Maybe we'll eventually see all basketball players required to wear head and face protection in the future. Heck, there's probably some youth league out there getting ready to try that out already. :) Go Gophers!

I think GG is fine. She had plenty of confidence to knock down that big 3 during the comeback and also pull down some big rebounds. She is a player that will run into match-up problems from time to time that will cause her some issues. The baseline blow-by she gave up at the end of the game and the inability to get to her spots consistently off the dribble were examples of matching up with really athletic players. I'm not too worried about her. She's pretty resilient and finds other ways to contribute when her shot isn't there, much like Braun earlier this season. Speaking of Braun, other than Battle's game-winner, my favorite play was Braun sprinting 30 feet to dive for a loose ball that she had no business even getting close too. Teams respond with their leaders do stuff like that!

It was so fun to hear that magic, the roar of barn come back to life. Great to see the Seniors go out with a win. Thank you coach Whalen for bringing in the early recruits, and thank you to coach P and staff for moving the Minnesota program forward. Today was a really good day, Ole Miss was a really good team. Watched them Friday against Gonzaga and knew today would be a battle to the end. Thank you Gophers for a great joyful memory.

Agree with you 100% regarding the refs. It was a physical game today and, for the most part, the refs just let them play

With less than 1 minute left the clock stops after the ball goes through the net and doesn't start until it's touched in play after the in bounds. It makes sense but it really makes these end of game situations awkward as there is usually a tenth or two left but they have to clear the floor.

Thanks for explaining that. I had the exact same question as Mac. 👍

Battle’s my MVP for the season

I remember some folks.. weren't fans of Battle throughout her career here..

how about now?!

what a moment Amaya will never forget.. and imho her #3 belongs up in the rafters
Agreed.

All time- She’s second in assists, 11th in scoring & 9 in rebounds and I think the UCLA game will be 130 consecutive start - incredibly durable and consistent.

12 is fat and slow and still nobody scoring on her
I find your comments inappropriate, but now that you have introduced them... several on this forum have admitted to having to "eat their words" regarding the performance of this team... as a cautionary note, continuing to have to eat your words so often may result in becoming fat and slow.

... as an aside, I bet #12, could run circles around me all day and never get winded, and bench press me several times.

Some day in the future, Amaya Battle should have a banner with her name and number hanging from it in Williams arena, after her playing career is over. She is deserving.

I think an Ole Miss player said to a ref b4 the Gophers possession they want a timeout after a basket made. So, a timeout was called.

If the refs can keep it under control with the players responding accordingly, this is the way the coaches and players like it. Once a player doesn't want to play it that way anymore, then the ref has to quickly go back and call more fouls/penalties that can be difficult to do at times. Often times its up the players how the refs will call a game. Not always easy for the refs.

Couple shout outs.

She has driven me nuts this season at times but credit to Glenn think she played 2 great games, played within herself, I think she is the teams best post entry passer and hit a huge 3 late.

Also want to credit Christian, Klick, Breshers. All 3 had inconsistent playing time all season but they had to play in roles in these tournament games. Congrats to them for doing their job.

Happy for the whole team and state

Her brother played for the gophers but then left to play in Europe. Wait…he left to play for Ohio State…WTH?
