***OFFICIAL OHIO STATE AT MINNESOTA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

I sincerely don't understand why they don't just have out of bounds balls that are not clear as jump balls. The reviews take so much time, kill excitement and are basically coin flips anyway. If the refs aren't 100%, it's a jump ball. Period.
I hate these because it’s the defense reaching in and knocking the ball away. Everyone would be fine with moving on , but they stop the game for 2-3 minutes to say it went off the finger nail of the offensive player.

If you move on and don’t show 100 angles of it, no one cares.

At least create a challenge system.

Since today's version of basketball sucks I watch a lot of games from the 90s. No one even questions close out of bounds plays and the game continues on.

Now we have five guys swirling their finger for 40 minutes a night

I truly believe most folks overstate his ability.
He is not an athletic freak by any means. He does have really good coordination and skills for a guy his size. I cringe when he shoots threes (even though he is not bad), I think he is at his best going to the hoop where he is a creative finisher and pretty quick on the drive. He gets into funks where he goes mentally soft and just settles. His court vision is either not good or he just doesn't care to pass.

He has never been my favorite player, he just is not inspirational and his record follows him- his teams don't win. NC won after he left. Marquette the same.

The problem is Garcia isn't a player to build a team around. He has skills but no killer instinct to desire the ball or take over games, he disappears too often and gets lost in the shuffle. If it was me and NIL money to spend I would've given more to keep Hawkins and Payne from last year and let Garcia walk if he wanted to.

The good news is any new coach doesn't have to spend any money on any current players for roster overhaul next year. Realistically only player you want to keep out of everyone on this team is Asuma and I dont think he will be going anywhere since his brother is committed to the baseball team.

100% right.

Asuma is a kid you can build around. I can't wait to see what he does with a different coaching staff (here at the U please). He just plays the game the right way.

It's the worst thing in sports. And you're right, the defense cause it to go out. We were all fine with that for decades. If it isn't obvious after looking once or twice (ideally in real time) that it hit a knee or something, move on. It absolutely kills the game. And if it's that GD important in the last two minutes, it should be that important at other points as well. Another illogical part of the whole process.

These reviews seriously are killing the sport.

This.

Asuma should have been in the starting lineup for most of the year. He has stud written all over him.

It was a little shocking to see Femi pop off the bench in overtime after we had played all of those minutes with Betts. Did Ben forget he had him available?
Why would you randomly play a guy about a minute a game and then put them into the game in a critical situation and expect them to perform to any level. A few may prosper, most won't.

Not a prescription for people development in anything.

I turned the game on in the first 1/2 and saw our guy take out an tOSU guy with a terrible screen and I went back to the NDSU/Montana game. Realized after the football game that there was nothing worth watching. Made the mistake of checking twitter and saw it was collapsing and had to watch. Wasn't sure if I'd see today for fear I might go blind from what I watched.

I turned the game on with a couple of minutes left in the first OT. I watched some sloppy basketball, a bunch of missed free throws, two excruciatingly long video reviews, and a bone-headed play on defense. When it went into the 2nd OT I turned the TV off and went to bed knowing the Gophers luck couldn't last another OT.

3 years in the program now. If Betts is part of what we have to look forward to next year won’t be better.
We have no clue what we have to look forward to next year because we almost certainly will have a new coach and almost completely new roster. :)

I didn't watch the game last night, but it's almost to the point of just feeling bad for Ben and these guys at this point.

It's not like they aren't working hard, they just don't know how or don't have the ability to get it done.

I'd imagine it's signed, sealed and delivered that Ben won't be coming back. Almost just hope they win a game or 2 for the guys.

I wish they would put a time limit on all the reviews. Give the refs like 30 seconds to look at the play. If it isn't obvious in those 30 seconds stick with the call that was made and move on. I get the desire to get it right but the long drawn out reviews where they are going frame by frame are ridiculous.

The expedited replay thing in the NFL has been nice. Make the change quickly and move on.

Among the usual litany of ridiculously redundant kvetching and whining that dominate these post-game threads, there was one nugget of sanguinity and truth:

"Best game we played all year"

There are two ways to look at this game:

1) This team is #@&*%X!!!!! I can't believe the #@&*%X free throw shooting!!!! Betts is a #@&*%X!!!! Garcia is a worthless #@&*%X!!!! And Johnson is the biggest and most worthless #@&*%X of all!!!!

OR

2) Despite team free throw shooting that inexplicably managed to fall even below our usual dismal standard, a mind-boggling critical mistake late in the contest, an injury to a starter, and the worst game imaginable by our star who managed to play only 29 minutes of a 50 minute game, this team lost by a point in double overtime to a favored team and managed another rarity of beating the spread comfortably. They did this after losing their first three conference games by between 15 and 20 points each. Four players fought for over 40 minutes in this game led by Patterson with 48. Four players had between 18 and 21 points in this game and our star player wasn't among them.

There are plenty of reasons to be angry this season but this game really isn't one of them.

I get where you are coming from but not sure I agree with this final statement because wins are going to be hard to come by in conference play and this was absolutely a game we should have won comfortably if not for our complete inability to make free throws.

Angry might not be the right word but last night was extremely disappointing because we should have won that game and found a way to lose.

Yes, wins will be hard to come by this season so I'm going to look at performances as well as wins or losses. There were some bad performances in this game that contributed significantly to this defeat but there were also good ones that kept us in position to win throughout most of the 50 minutes. And, as I mentioned in my previous post, some of these guys had to be worn out when the game went to overtime but they continued to fight anyway.

I know most people won't feel this way but I'm going to try to enjoy and even admire the moments that I can this season. That suits me fine because I've never been one to follow the heard anyway.

An interesting question for the class I suppose. Now that players are being paid can we lower the critical boom on them? Usually, you could only criticize players to a certain point; coaches of course no holds barred. Now that some of these guys are making decent, even a lot of money, is it open season on them?

As an aside I really thought that Johnson was the guy but it's beyond apparent he is not. Coyle should be fired along with Ben who I do feel bad for personally but honestly the guy is going to make more money in a few years than I've ever a chance to make in my lifetime. Time to start over with a new coach and hopefully a new A.D. Again.

Good point! Sure, criticize away! But, when there is nothing but that, it gets old and extremely tedious. Like I said above, there were some bad things in this game but there were some good things too and I agree with the poster who said this was our best game of the season.

I think that hardly anyone would disagree that it's time to start over with a new coach next season. Personally, I couldn't care less about the A.D. He doesn't coach or play in games and I don't think he's evaluated by the success or failure of any particular coach by those who matter in that evaluation.

Is anyone really "angry"? Frustrated maybe. There are only 3-4 games they have a realistic chance of winning. This was one of them against a not very good team who desperately tried to give the game away. And they STILL found a way to lose. It doesn't matter in the end whether this team goes 0-20 or 1-19 but it's still pathetic.

The sad part about last night was that our “good” free throw shooters were walking to the line late to ice the game and threw up bricks! This seems to indicate a fitness problem as the throws looked short. Maybe they aren’t in good enough shape for the minutes they are playing which is another sign of bad coaching.

As for Garcia, he just looked out of it. Like his girlfriend dumped him or he can’t achieve stiffness. He looked dejected. Maybe he’s a self centered diva who gets depressed and recedes when things don’t go his way? He just didn’t look like he was trying to fight his way out of his slump at all, except ft or the stupid stupid foul on the dunk at the end there. That was the dumbest foul I’ve seen in a long time.

Countdown to the end of the Ben era stays on track. I’d say he gets fired the day after the last game at this point. Maybe if things get worse, the day after they are eliminated from B1G tournament participation.

And yes, it can get worse.
