*** OFFICIAL MINNESOTA-MICHIGAN STATE IN-GAME THREAD ***

Yes. Yes it was. They got about 4 rounds in before the recorded music came on over it.

Was that a F*** Tom Izzo chant I heard on TV? Just want to be sure. I was listening with headphones in a loud area.

Are we going to have to go through that crap again? I hope the refs T up the student section if it comes out again.

Yeah, it's just a misguided port from the Bo Ryan chant by some students who probably don't have enough history watching B1G to know the difference between Bo and Izzo. I'm fine with them doing it to Bo because he's just a tool.

It makes us sound very.... Texas Tech like. It's just not creative at at all.

They work the refs all game long. That bothers the crap out of me. I think student section was bothered by it too.

Go Gophers

The correct rebound total was 39 to 32. Dr. Don per Gophersports.com box score. That seems a bit more accurate.

Let the students be students. If we want a loud, intense, passionate student section (and I do) then we have to walk a fine line between discouraging a certain chant and allowing the students to have control of their own environment. It's kind of like the older fans that want to hear the band- If a DJ/popular music gets the crowd more hyped, then that is what should be played.

People rag on the students for not showing up to watch bad football and then when they show up to watch a good basketball game (and are loud and energetic throughout the game) they get criticized for saying "F Izzo" or not starting a Vaughn chant.

Definitely Great game the barn was rocking loved the atmosphere! I definitely lost my voice Let's keep this going!

Dungy taking notice!

Oh, don't forget the whole student section launching into a "BS" chant over a correct call against the Gopher when the ball went off (I think) Coleman's foot right in front of them. That was awesome.

Izzo said dead legs “might have been” an issue for MSU, but he and his players also acknowledged the obvious improvement of Tubby Smith’s Gophers

Not sure how dead legs applies since both teams had ample time to prepare and rest before this game. If he means that his team ran out of gas and the Gophers had more left in the tank, I would agree. If not, he's reaching for excuses. The way it's made to sound, it seems like he's saying "well, we were tired before the game started and that's why we lost", which I would call BS unless they didn't manage to get any sleep over the past few days. The way Appling described it was more appropriate imo. I think the Spartans were just dog tired by the end and the Gophers kind of wore them out in the last five minutes.

"I think the Spartans were just dog tired by the end and the Gophers kind of wore them out in the last five minutes."

Hence the need for Tubby using his bench the way he does. I agree, MRJ, that in the final run we had energy left in the engine that MSU ran out of.

If the biggest knock against the student section is that they were booing loudly against a correct call and they had obscenities for the other coach, I'll take it. It means they are in the building and engaged. Even though I like Izzo a lot more than I like Bo Ryan, I was annoyed at how much angry discussion time Izzo was getting with the ref without getting a technical as his own, its not like they started it for no reason in the middle of the game, Izzo's tantrum was slowing down a game that we were controlling. And I have definitely stood up at hockey games and booed calls then whispered to my girlfriend that it was the right call as I sat down.

He definitely likes to have depth and works pretty hard at developing that aspect of his team. Sometimes, I think it's to the detriment of what is happening on the court at the time. But that's just my opnion. Having said that, he certainly pushed the right buttons in terms of substitution patterns against Michigan State. Beating a tough, physical outfit like the Spartans requires a lot of depth because of how intense games against them are. And at the end, you could tell the Gophers had more left in the tank and a lot of it had to do with using his bench effectively imo.

Agreed. While I don't think the profanity is necessary, especially since you expect there to be families present, you gain home court advantage by creating a loud and hostile environment. If that means chants like these.....I can live with it. However, I am also a college student myself, so this doesn't bother me as much as I suspect it does for others.

FWIW

Here is a game thread from a Sparty website - http://www.theonlycolors.com/2012/12/31/3822238/michigan-state-at-minnesota-game-thread

While one can read about a few digs on Minnesota in general (although maybe I am not as observant as others, but usually do not see the hillbilly accusations thrown our way) Standard stuff for the most part.

With exceptions of course, they do know their basketball and their passion does shine through. I was most surprised to read about their disdain for referee Teddy Valentine. Evidently they feel he has some sort of vendetta against MSU. (I always thought that Hightower was the most despised official in Big Ten basketball.)

Oh boy MSU a little butthurt they got dominated? Boo hoo.

The F*** Tom Izzo chant was probably a little salty but they shouldn't take it personally. The student section is just gearing up for Bo Ryan.

I look forward to the F*** Bo Ryan chants.

Was the Tom Izzo chant unnecessary? Probably, considering we don't have much of a rivalry with MSU. But at least they showed up over a break no less and were loud.

I too can't wait for the Bo Ryan chants...

I just love how the announcers are absolutely silent for about 15 seconds. All they have to do is talk to drown it out on TV and they do nothing. Pure gold. haha

Chant for the Gophers the name calling in my opinion just makes the fans look dumb.

"The Spartans were handled physically, and Minnesota was able to establish their dominance in the paint. Adreian Payne and Derrick Nix were held to a combined 3 for 14 from the field."

"Appling’s and Harris’s decent performances were matched and trumped by the Hollins brother’s performances."

Trevor with some help from EE, owned Nix & Payne. A thing of beauty.

MSU men's basketball: Key stretch, unsung hero
"QUOTABLE
"(Allowing) extra possessions is really what killed us. Playing defense for an extended amount of time is hard on our legs, and then having to back down and having to execute offense, it was tough." — MSU point guard Keith Appling, after Minnesota pulled down 14 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second-chance points.

Graham Couch: Spartans loss to Gophers a big missed opportunity
"Not many Big Ten teams, contenders included, will roll out of Williams Arena with a victory. So for those that do, it’s like an extra win in the standings."
...
"MSU put together an 11-0 run after falling behind 51-44 early in the second half. The Spartans were suddenly forcing turnovers and, like at the end of the first half, looked aggressive and fluid on offense.
Then, at 55-51, they exhaled, even as they slowly extended their lead to 59-54.
“As a team, I felt like we just got a little comfortable,” center Derrick Nix said. “And when you’re on the road …
Can’t exhale.

I'm no puritan and I hate the Grinch just as much as the average Gopher fan, but the "F-BoRyan" chants or "F-Izzo" chants are nothing to be proud of. Gotta be more creative!
