***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT NEBRASKA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

No idea if Ben will be retained or not, but his coaching staff does a pretty darn good job of working with the talent they get into the building. 7-11 is a very respectable record for this outfit. Can Ben recruit and retain quality players over multiple years? If he could, I think he's now learned enough on the job to be an above average coach in the B1G. Pulling for the guy, personally.
He has gotten more wins out of these guys than I could have imagined. He has gotten them to play hard. Coaching strategy? Horrid. He is too inflexible to be an above average coach. Roster assembly and management- really, really bad- unless Tyler Cochran was going to be amazing this is some weak talent.

Nebraska has shot 19 free throws to just 5 for the Gophers. Gophers have 16 fouls to Nebraskas 7. And that includes Garcia getting grabbed and bent over in the post with nothing called
Did you comment when Garcia should have been called for his 5th and they let it go?

The last part was spot on except I think Garcia got hurt. Ben was very lucky because that was a horrid show of coaching. We survived solely because we shot very, very well and Nebraska did not. They got 14 extra shots and still lost. Rigsby scoring 20 in 23 minutes is insane.
Fred lost the game. His team should have been driving to the basket all game. Dumb.

Of course Tyler Cochran was going to be amazing. Just like Isiah Ihnen and Betts. Poor Ben. Injuries preventing folks from realizing what an elite coach he is.

Really think TC was going to make a difference. A 6-2 bowling ball defensive stalwart who can rebound. Mitchell probably would be off the bench. But the injury lingered longer than what we thought. Moot point.
He has gotten the team to play hard and 7 wins with a game left is probably more than what a lot of people predicted. The strategy has been inconsistent. The wins against Oregon, Michigan, USC and UCLA made him look like a good coach. On the flip side, the bad losses and bad close wins (against lesser competition) made him look like the worst coach in the conference.

It’s worth pointing out that Hoiberg, who is far more experienced than Ben is .319 in winning percentage in the B1G over his 6 years. It ain’t easy to win in this league.

OK....Gophers win and I'm happy, but I'm still gonna bitch:
REFS:
1. One foul called against Nebraska the whole first half (can't remember ever seeing that in a D1 basketball game.
2. Nebraska comes out ultra aggressive on D to start second half, slapping, grabbing and holding. Gophers still never manage to even get into the bonus in the 2nd half.
3. 20-5 difference in FT's???? C'mon
4. The 10 second call should be investigated. Plain and simple. It looks and smells bad. Clocked it with my own timer and 8 seconds ran off (generously) from the time the ball was touched on the inbounds.

ANNOUNCERS and TELECAST:
There was clearly a theme in today's game and that was Nebraska being being projected a 10 seed in the NCAA tourney. This bled into the broadcast. It felt like it was produced by Nebraska. Was there ever a replay done on huge calls that went against the Gophers?? Garcia's fourth foul where he's tangled up with Morgan (and Garcia clearly thought the call was against NU).....could we see a replay? The 10 second violation? Could we see a replay? Did they even talk about it?? Biggest play of the game, and they glossed over it like it was 2 minutes into the game? I might be a homer, but it was ridiculously one-sided telecast. F

COACHING:
I'm an equal opportunity complainer. Gophers won but it surely wasn't because of coaching. They've won 2 road games this year because Rigsby has had out of body experiences. That's either luck or coaching malpractice that he hasn't gotten more minutes this season with many of Mitchell's struggles. As for today's game, there were so many mistakes for a not new coach I was screaming at the television. You know Nebraska was going to press the second half. We literally went 4 possessions in a row not being able to inbound the ball. Two passes knocked out of bounds, one foul called and one turnover. How is that possible? Took CBJ forever in the second half to get Rigsby back in the game for Mitchell, who might as well have stayed in the locker room. Rigsby hit a three with 2 1/2 minutes left in the game and CBJ takes his last timeout??? Why? Offense for defense for Garcia? Ridiculous. Garcia hardly saw the floor after that due to this stupid move, including not being on the floor on the last play. You knew the Gophers were going to need that timeout....which would have made the 10 second call moot.

Rant over.

Wait until Wednesday when there is a
compelling conference need to protect Wisconsin’s seed if you want to see some “fancy” officiating…over/under on the combined fouls of Crowl & Winter?

It's not a complete zero roster, issue has been mostly inside game no height. Odukale I feel is a versatile player and solid defender. Everyone bashes on Patterson but he's been mostly solid/old school guard. The issue is more about big time heavy senior and starting all over, when/if you're gonna go this veteran, it should have led to better results, especially dumbfounding early part of year. Johnson will probably get another year, let's see what strings he can pull. It will be interesting as he's not been the magic man yet, in pulling scoring studs and bigs from the portal.

I thought we were there a couple of times with Richard but it never happened. I have no confidence it will this time either.

Calling Odukale a Swiss army knife is about as accurate as it gets. I thoroughly enjoy his effort especially on defense. I think having more resources/money to throw at good mid-major players, which there will be no shortage of. Just need a more balanced roster. Having 3 freshman come in will give balance to roster age, depending on their roll. Having Asuma with a year under his belt will be helpful too

After watching in person all of the prior Gopher losses at Pinnacle Bank arena, I had vowed not to go this year as I had grown tired of the same old outcome even when the Gophers were the better team. Then last week happened which further solidified my decision not to go. Then a call came with a free good ticket and at the last minute I decided to go. The first half was as good as it gets for a Gopher fan in Lincoln. Then the start of the second half and I let a little confidence start to creep into my head. The dreaded collapse, I was fighting the urge to leave, everyone thinks Husker football fans are the nicest, but their basketball fans can be dicks as I have experienced. I stuck it out till the end and am thankful for it. No idea what to think of this team and Johnson's weird situation but today was worth the longtime suffering.

Fouls see Georgia Tech in 1990

True. I've often thought this season that Payne was our biggest loss from last offseason. When thinking about in-bound transfers in this offseason, I would be thrilled to see him enter the portal and agree to return here.

Mike Mitchell only seven minutes. Coaches decision to go with Rigsby as the hot hand or something else? Did not watch or listen. Not a perfect pattern but team has been much better when I’m not paying attention.

This offense doesn't work for Mike. He can't beat guards off the dribble and he never gets a catch and shoot opportunity that is open in this mess of an offense.

Understood but did CBJ just figure that out today and decide to sit him?
Brennan seems to be one of those guys that needs to see his first shot go down then anything can happen. He was the hot hand in the first half for sure. Actually we almost blew the game not playing him and Frank in the 2nd half enough, but thankfully it wasn’t too late when the coaches finally realized they had almost blown the game.

Unbelievable but not surprising.
