***OFFICIAL MICHIGAN STATE AT MINNESOTA, IZZO TO COMPLIMENT MEDVED POST-GAME IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Usually, you can look at a boxscore and tell why a team won or lost...not tonight.
Gophers out rebounded 39 to 23. Typically, even more devastating to the outcome...Mich St 13 offensive rebounds to our 3.
They had 22 assists...we had 17.
Turnovers were within reach...we only had 6 but they were under 10 at 9.
Steals...they had 5, we had 4.
Shooting same thing....pretty even...FG% 45 to 48, FT% both at 71%, we did shoot threes better at 38% to 48% but the difference was only 10 to 9 in makes for us and we won by 3.
Not a typical box score result when you get out rebounded by 10 on the offensive glass and they also have 5 more assists. Usually, there is something...like, well they made 19 3's to our 5 or they shot 42 free throws and we shot 11...AND there it is the Gophers made 10 more free throws than Michigan St. But when you foul to catch up that distorts the numbers so...I dunno.
Niko doing an amazing job! I do know that!

Never underestimate the importance of easy baskets. The Gophers got more of those than the Spartans. Great action and motion on offense; uncompromising position defense. MSU scored a lot of points in the second half, but few were easy. I said it in this or another thread: shutting down the Spartan fast break is a major accomplishment and arguably the key to the game.

You know what: it's not how good you are; it's how well you play. Last Sunday, the Nittany Lions played what might have been their best game of the year, and the Gophers played like they were on cold medicine. Last night, the Spartans looked hung over in the first half, and this time the Gophs made a lead stand up.

Okay, one more thought. When I woke up this morning, I was still incensed about the phantom fouls called against the Gophers down the stretch in the second half. A bunch of phantom calls against a shorthanded team is first-degree basketball murder. It's a wonder the Gophs survived that.

I don't fault the team much for frittering that big lead away. MSU made some ridiculous shots. More importantly, if that game gets called correctly in the last 5-10 minutes, there is no cardiac finish.

I believe the bench had more fouls than every other stat combined.
crazy.....

Grove & Kai combined.....17 minutes.....0 points, 1 rebound, 1 ast, 1 steal, 1 blk.......5 fouls

if you count Kai's 1 shot attempt its a tie! lol

but F-it. im getting 4 tickets to 3 of the last 4 home games!!! NIKO you made Gophers Basketball fun again!

Niko is the better coach. There I said it. What Gophers would start for MSU? Maybe one or two. Then there is the bench disparity. Yet we beat them. Give Niko time and really good players will come our way. Then this is going to be an upper division team year after year.

Not to get out over our skis, but checking out the upcoming schedule...we should be favored or close to favored in a bunch of these games??

Maryland
@Washington
@Oregon
Rutgers
Northwestern

UCLA game close to a tossup
Big underdogs @Michigan
Slight underdogs @Indiana

Potential is there for a very strong finish...
