***OFFICIAL MICHIGAN STATE AT MINNESOTA IZZO LONG POST-GAME HANDSHAKE WITH JOHNSON, POST-GAME PRAISE IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

This aged well.
I'll give Johnnyboy credit. Most of the posters on GH that loved this hire for political and local ties reasons are either hiding or changed their monikers. Johnnyboy hasn't dodged his support for the Ben hire even during the disaster. That is definitely worth something.

Will Frank Mitchell make a free throw this year? There are lots of great stories to play out yet during this exciting season.

I guessed 6 wins in the poll- I don't like that number any more.

Lol. I guess so.

People mistakenly think that "the beautiful game" refers to the sport of soccer. Alas...no. "The beautiful game" actually refers to Gophers basketball when Rigsby drives to the bucket, Parker Fox shoots free throws, or Frank Mitchell jumps.

Welp, it doesn’t look like we’re gonna be relying on defense and rebounding this year

The scary thing is that we didn't even play that bad. We just aren't good at all.
On offense you are right. We shot above our season averages on threes/FGs and FTs (still bad) and we only turned it over 7 times... yet we were never in the game after we got that brief 2 point lead.

Defensively, we simply couldn't handle their size and athleticism. I shudder to think of some of the matchups ahead.

He has to give Edmunds more run, just at least try it. He looks like a Big Ten big at least. Frank works his fanny off but he simply cannot compete at center in this league. Rigsby is terrible. Garcia is a slick scorer but doesn't play team ball and can't defend in the post. There is no offensive plan that I can see. Our coach is like an NPC out there- just nothing.

That was rough. The Spartans got wide open looks from beyond the arc, and also dunks/fouled shots at the rim (...and they didn't clank free throws like we do...). Good to see Mitchell back and hit some threes and also had some nice passes, but otherwise...ick.

It’s so funny how Izzo always goes out of his way to compliment Ben Johnson as if we all haven’t seen the last several years of his basketball teams.

I think it's a good time to bring this back up. Minnesota, Marquette, and Iowa State all opened up at the same time 3 plus seasons ago. Minnesota and Marquette had nearly identical recent situations with Pitino and Wojo. Iowa State was even worse than Minnesota is currently. Tonight, Marquette played Iowa State in a matchup of #5 vs #6 in the country and both teams have been in the tournament the past 3 years. Minnesota got blown out at home and Ben Johnson now has a 25% (!) conference winning percentage for his tenure.

There was no rationale for this hire when it was made. We could have had a ton of success the past few years with the right hire. We still don't know for sure if this hire was forced on Coyle or if it is his to own. He has to answer for the extension after the last place first season, why he never demanded any staff changes, why these horrible non-conference schedules were allowed, why a 4th year was allowed with as poorly as the 3rd year ended, etc, etc.

When does the football season start?

It was a bit better than I thought. But, look, we've got 10 seniors on this roster - 10! - and that will turn over again next year. I get it but this is just not sustainable.

Everything they did came pretty easy. Everything we did took enormous effort. We just aren’t talented.

A third of the way through season 4, we sit directly behind CBB powers like Jacksonville, UTEP, Southern Utah, Towson and Brown at 170 in the NET.
