***OFFICIAL GOPHERS VS ILLINI IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Positives today: Shannon Brooks, Duke McGhee, and winning a game while playing our worst game since Nebraska.

Lol that'll be the story on GH this week.

Kneeling down would have iced the game, but "don't score" doesn't pop into player's minds too much.

You have to fall down there. That was moronic. Claeys makes it moot with gutsy call.

A freshman running back breaks off the longest run of his brief career and you seriously think he is not going to put the ball in the end zone? I am sure not scoring was a thought that never entered his mind.

This.

Still not sure what our deal is lately with special teams. 16 yard punt and an offsides that led to an Illinios TD.

As someone with a small wager on the game, I was glad to see him score.
Lol good point. I'm sure there were equal amounts of groans and cheers at Vegas sports books at that moment.

Well I had to leave for 90 minutes in between, but a solid win. Congrats to Tracy and the boys.

x2 I have never seen so much bitching about everything. I'm mean even good plays. I thought I was super negative but some of you guys need therapy.

I'm not sure why MORE teams don't go for two when they're up seven, to be honest. The benefit of making them have to score twice far outweighs the benefit of making them have to go for two. Granted, going for two is more difficult, but the other team has to actually score the touchdown first in order for that to even come into play.

Ugly, ugly game that the Gophers were fortunate to win. Positives to me were Shannon Brooks housing a couple and Leidner throwing the best fade pass of his career to Still. Hardin was a bright spot on kick returns as well. I am thankful for some very questionable play calling and decision making by Illinois in the second half.

It's a win... walking to the Commons I smelled skunks. It's amazing how that permeates from the East.

I get why some are excited about the call by Claeys but could you imagine had he missed that, Illinois scored a touchdown, went for two and won? I do like a more aggressive coach, especially in college, especially when you don't have the dominant team, but that was boarderline stupidity in my opinion.

Oh well, it worked so who cares, like I said, I do like that he has that mindset, I just hope it continues to work for him.

Players do not wanna play for somebody who plays not to lose. It's who he is. Could have played for overtime versus Michigan too. Play to win. Live with the results.

While thats a cool saying, I really don't think it applys.

Ok, but there are plenty examples of extremely conservative play from this staff. The play calls and decision making with the last possessions before halftime against Michigan and Ohio State. The punts down two scores in the 4th quarter against Ohio State and Iowa.

I like the call to go for 2. It's about a 45-50% chance to ice the game. The longer the game goes on the worse our chances of winning become, because our defense was tired and a sieve. If we go to OT who knows what happens. Shorten the game if possible when your defense stinks.

Arguable call, but not as awful as some seem to think.

Definitely don't think it was a bad call and the negatives of missing it are limited since the lead was still 7. I just don't know that I have really ever seen that situation come up before.

The Brooks play is the tough one....can't really fault the kid for scoring but in that situation but he ices the game by having the awareness not to. Thankfully it didn't end up mattering. Now it is time to get that long overdue win over the Badgers and end a rough season on a high note.

Ballsy call and correct call by a coach when the defense was struggling. Go for 2 with a pretty good offense, or kick the one and bet on a terrible D? Easy decision. If the score had been 10-3, maybe. But not when you can't stop 'em at all.

After Brooks broke through for the last score I actually wondered if the Iilini might have let him go. But watching the guys in hot pursuit, that certainly wasn't the case. I do think you might be asking a bit much of a true freshman to figure out in the heat of the moment to fall down at the one. I'd be interested in hearing if this is something the coaches think or talk about at that stage of the game.

I didn't agree with the call to go for 2. With that said, I had been asking for ML7 to fake the hand-off and go around the end for almost 2 quarters. It was there. I'm fairly certain Limey was saving it and was fairly confident we would get the 2.

Loved Brooks, Huff, and Duke today. Thought the game plan was solid again considering all the injuries to O and D line. The players are really competing hard these last 4 weeks. Think Stelter is really developing into a solid D tackle before our eyes. Thought Hardin did a good job of rebounding after a rough start.
Hoping Mortell and BBC take out all their frustration of rough senior seasons next week on Becky.

And Murray

Murray had a rough game against Nebraska...but other than that I think he's been pretty solid. The back shoulder catch they completed against him today was a great throw and catch. Sometimes the other team makes plays. I think people will appreciate him more next year when he's not here. A corner that seems invisible most of the game is usually a good thing.

I was screaming for him to go down the last 40 yards of that run. However, being on the other side of the field and on the upper deck, I don't think he heard me.

I know for a fact that despite those woes, NFL teams are looking at Murray as a potential hig round draft pick.

I actually liked the 2 point conversion call. Last few weeks our offense has been better than the defense, and we put the game in the offense's hands. You gotta dance with who brung ya.

For those that were at the game, who did the "Do the Gopher" announcement at the end of the 3rd quarter?
